Analysis of Slag Behavior near the Slag Tap in an Entrained Flow Coal Gasifier (분류층 석탄가스화기 하부 슬래그 탭 부근의 슬래그 거동 해석)

  • A steady-state analysis has been conducted to predict the behavior of the slag layer in the entrained-flow slagging coal gasifier. The analysis takes into consideration the composition dependent slag properties such as density, viscosity, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and temperature of critical viscosity. The amount of added flux to the design coal and the variation of syngas temperature inside the gasifier have been adopted as calculation parameters. The predicted results are the local thickness of the molten and the solid slag layers, and the slag viscosity and the velocity distribution across the molten slag layer along the gasifier wall near the slag tap.

  • In the entrained-flow coal gasifier, coal ash turns into a molten slag most of which deposits onto the wall to form liquid and solid layers. Critical viscosity refers to the viscosity at the interface of the two layers. The slag layers play an important role in protecting the wall from physical/chemical attack from the hot syngas and in continuously discharging the ash to the slag tap at the bottom of the gasifier. For coal with high ash melting point and slag viscosity, CaO-based flux is added to coal to lower the viscosity. This study evaulates the effect of critical viscosity temperature and ash/flux ratio on the slag behavior using numerical modelling in a commercial gasifier. The changes in the slag layer thickness, heat transfer rate, surface temperature and velocity profiles were analyzed to understand the underlying mechanism of slag flow and heat transfer.

  • 석탄가스화 기술은 고온, 고압 조건에서 석탄과 산소의 불완전연소 및 가스화 반응을 통해 일산화탄소(CO)와 수소($H_2$)가 주성분인 합성가스를 제조하여 이용하는 현실적인 에너지원의 확보를 위한 방법인 동시에 이산화탄소를 저감할 수 있는 기술이다. 석탄가스화기 공급되는 석탄은 산소와의 부분 산화, 수증기 및 $CO_2$와의 반응에 의하여 합성가스로 전환되는데, 일반적으로 슬래깅 방식 석탄가스화기의 정상운전 중에 가스화기 내부 온도는 $1,400{\sim}1,600^{\circ}C$ 정도의 고온이며, 운전압력은 20~60 기압으로 매우 고압 상태에서 운전이 이루어지는데, 공급되는 석탄 시료의 성분들 중 가연성 물질의 99% 이상이 합성가스로 전환되는 반면, 회분에 해당되는 무기물의 대부분은 용융 슬랙 형태로 가스화기의 벽을 타고 흘러내리다가 슬랙탭을 통해 하부의 냉각조로 떨어지면서 급냉이 이루어지게 된다. 그러므로, 석탄가스화기 정상운전중 슬랙탭 주변의 온도를 고온으로 유지함으로써 용융슬랙의 고형화를 방지하는 것은 석탄가스화기의 안정적인 연속운전을 위하여 중요한 기술 중의 하나라고 할 수 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 저급탄 가스화를 위한 1 톤/일급 고온, 고압 습식 석탄가스화기의 정상운전중 슬랙탭 부근에서 용융슬랙의 고형화를 방지하기 위한 슬랙탭 버너시스템의 설계를 진행하였으며, 안정적인 운전조건 도출을 위하여 보조연료(CNG)와 산소의 공급비율에 따른 화염특성 시험을 진행하였다.

  • Cement is pointed out as the main cause of carbon dioxide emission in the construction industry. Many researchs are underway to use blast furnace slag, an industrial by-product, as a substitute for cement to reduce carbon dioxide emitted during the manufacturing the cement. When blast furnace slag is used as a substitute for cement, it has advantages such as long-term strength and chemical resistance improvement. However, blast furnace slag has a problem that makes initial strength low. This is due to the impermeable film on the surface created during the production of blast furnace slag. The created film is known to be destroyed in an alkaline environment, and based on this, previous studies have suggested a solution using various alkali activators. But, alkali activator is dangerous product since it is a strong alkaline material. And it has the disadvantage in price competitiveness. In this study, an experiment was conducted to improve the initial hydration reactivity of the blast furnace slag to secure the initial strength of the mortar substituted with the blast furnace slag and to check whether the carbonation resistance was increased. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the mortar using alkaline water showed higher strength than the mortar using tap water, and there were more hydration products generated inside. In addition, it was confirmed that the mortar using alkaline water as a compounding water had high carbonation resistance.

Assessment of the Hydraulic Conductivity of the Furnace Slag Coated with the Mixture of Bentonite-sepiolite-guargum under Sea Water Condition (벤토나이트-해포석-구아검 혼합물질이 코팅된 제강슬래그의 해수에 대한 투수성 평가)

  • Bentonite has been generally used as vertical cutoff barrier material and reported to have several problems regarding its low workability, drying shrinkage cracking by particle cohesion, and ineffective waterproof ability under sea water condition. In this study, the particle sealant, the furnace slag coated by the mixture of bentonite, sepiolite and guargum, was developed to compensate these weak points and the hydraulic conductivity of the particle sealant was evaluated. Drying shrinkage cracking and swelling index was estimated to find the optimal mixing ratio of bentonite, sepiolite and guargum. The hydraulic conductivity of the particle sealants having different amount of sealant (bentonite-sepioliteguargum mixture) coating the furnace slag was estimated using the rigid wall permeameter and flexible wall permeameter. The results showed that drying shrinkage cracking was not found in the bentonite-sepiolite mixture with 20% sepiolite contents and the results from free swelling tests for the sealant having 1 : 0.025, 1 : 0.05 and 1 : 0.075 of weight ratios of bentonite-sepiolite mixture and guargum under simulated sea water condition were higher than those for the bentonitesepiolite mixture without guargum under tap water condition. These three sealants were coated on the furnace slag with 50% and 60% of sealant in the particle sealant and the hydraulic conductivity was estimated. In the cases of the particle sealants having 20% sepiolite in the bentonite-sepiolite mixture and 1 : 0.075 weight ratio of the bentonite-sepiolite mixture and guargum, the hydraulic conductivity from the rigid wall permeameter was below $1.0{\times}10^{-7}$ cm/sec under simulated sea water condition. The hydraulic conductivity of the particle sealant having $1.0{\times}10^{-6}$~$1.0{\times}10^{-7}$ cm/sec by the rigid wall permeameter was estimated using the flexible wall permeameter and found to be below $1.0{\times}10^{-7}$ cm/sec.

Investigation of Corrosion Mechanism by Analyses of Spent Chromia Refractory fvom a Coal Gasifier (석탄 가스화기에서의 크로미아 내화물 분석을 통한 화학적 침식 기구 규명)

  • Spent refractories from a coal gasifier after 1000 hours of operation were analyzed for crystalline phases, chemical composition and microstructures as a function of slag penetration depth, and the slag corrosion mechanism was determined. The chemical corrosion of chromia refractory occurred via reaction between Cr$_2$O$_3$ of the refractory and FeO and A1$_2$O$_3$ in the slag. The FeO reacted with Cr$_2$O$_3$ at the slare/refractory interface and formed FeCr$_2$O$_4$. After all FeO were consumed, Al in the penetrating slag substituted Cr in Cr$_2$O$_3$, forming (Al, Cr)$_2$O$_3$, at the edges of the particle, which were broken to form fragments rich in Al. The corrosion resistance of Cr$_2$O$_3$ varied with the particle size and the extent of sintering, and the higher resistance was observed in the larger and more sintered particles. There was no chemical change in ZrO$_2$, but showed the effects of physical corrosion: the grain boundaries became more wavy, and ZrO$_2$ grains were split in the corroded area. The slag penetration depth increased in the refractory samples farther down from the feed nozzles.

Comparison of Design Concepts for Four Different Entrained-Bed Coal Gasifier Types with CFD Analysis (CFD 해석을 통한 4종의 건식 분류층 석탄가스화기 설계개념 비교)

  • Coal gasifier is a key component for achieving high efficiency in integrated gasification combined cycle and indirect coal liquefaction. Although there have been several successful coal gasifiers that were commercially proven, many different design configurations are still possible for a simple and reliable gasifier operation. Four different gasifier design concepts of dry-feeding were compared in terms of residence time, exit syngas temperature and syngas composition. First, cold-flow simulation was applied to pre-select the configuration concepts, and the hot-flow simulation including chemical reactions was performed to compare the concepts at more actual gasifier operating conditions. There are many limitations in applying CFD method in gasifier design, particularly in estimating slag behavior and slag-tap design. However, the CFD analysis proved to be useful in comparing the widely different gasifier design concepts as a pre-selection tool.
