  • With the vision of 'a low carbon green develop' various industrial by-products were used as replacement of cement, in order to reduce $CO_2$ emissions from the manufacturing process of cement. Blast furnace slag is one of the industrial by-products. Due to the similar chemical compositions to ordinary Portland cement, blast furnace slag have been widely used in concrete with minimum side effects. Hence, in recent years, alkali activated slag-based composites are extensively studied by many researchers. However, the alkali activator can cause a number of problems in practice. Therefore, in this study, an alternative way of activating the slag was investigated. To activate the slag without using an alkali activator, calcium sulfate dihydrate was chosen and mixed with natural recycled fine aggregate. Fundamental properties of the slag-based mortar were tested to evaluate the effect of calcium sulfate dihydrate.

  • In this study, hardening characteristics and microstructure of blast furnace slag-cement mortar replaced alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate were analyzed. As a result of replacing alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate with 0, 10, 20, 30%, it was confirmed that the initial and final setting times are faster than that of blast furnace slag-cement mortar. The compressive strength of the specimens containing alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate decreased in the range of 42 ~ 76% at age 28 days compared with blast furnace slag-cement mortar. In the case of replacing the alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate, the shrinkage did not occur more rapidly than the cement mortar, but the slope of the strain curve showed a linear behavior. The results of scanning electron microscopy images analysis showed that the formation of ettringite was increased at alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate replaced mortar.

  • Today, concrete remains the most important, durable, and reliable material that has been used in the construction sector, making it the most commonly used material after water. However, cement continues to exert many negative effects on the environment, including the production of carbon dioxide (CO2), which pollutes the atmosphere. Cement production is costly, and it also consumes energy and natural non- renewable resources, which are critical for sustainability. These factors represent the motivation for researchers to examine the various alternatives that can reduce the effects on the environment, natural resources, and energy consumption and enhance the mechanical properties of concrete. Geopolymer is one alternative that has been investigated; this can be produced using aluminosilicate materials such as low calcium (class F) FA, Ultra-Fine GGBS, and high calcium FA (class C, which are available worldwide as industrial, agricultural byproducts.). It has a high percentage of silica and alumina, which react with alkaline solution (activators). Aluminosilicate gel, which forms as a result of this reaction, is an effective binding material for the concrete. This paper presents an up-to-date review regarding the important engineering properties of geopolymer formed by FA and slag binders; the findings demonstrate that this type of geopolymer could be an adequate alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Due to the significant positive mechanical properties of slag-FA geopolymer cements and their positive effects on the environment, it represents a material that could potentially be used in the construction industry.

  • Converter slag was reduced and modified with the addition of 5~10 weight percent of $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and $SiO_2+Al_2O_3$. which was water quenched and used as a cement additives. Additive was mixed from 10 to 30 weight percent with ordinary portland cement and made 9 kinds of mixed cement. Compressive strength of mixed cement mortar was tested md compared with com pressive strength of ordinary portland cement mortar. Effect of hydration reaction on the compressive strength of cement mortar was investigated by means of x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.

  • Rheological properties of cement paste containing ultrafine blastfurnace slag (UBS, $9600cm^2/g$) were investigated by mini-slump test, pH meter, conduction calorimeter and coaxial cylinder viscometer. In order to improve rheological properties of the cement paste, granulated blastfurnace slag (GBS, $3500cm^2/g$) and polycarboxylate type superplasticizer (PC) were also used in this experiment. The fluidity of cement paste containing UBS was decreased. The yield stress and plastic viscosity of cement paste was increased with increasing UBS. But the rheological properties were improved when GBS and PC were added to UBS blended cement paste. In the relationship between the yield stress and the plastic viscosity or the mini-slump value, the yield stress of the cement paste was proportional to the plastic viscosity of it. However the cement paste mini-slump value was in inverse proportional to the yield stress.

  • Recently in the construction industry there has been an increasing use of increasing replacement of cement with blast furnace slag cement(BS), an industrial by-product, to reduce environment load and production costs, and other increasing uses of BS cement. However in the case of BS being delivered in RMC factories, only score reports submitted when the are delivered are relied upon and ways to test the quality of fineness is inadequate. Therefore this study gave many changes to various cements and BS fineness to test the variations of BS as a cement, then used the correlation between this and the density value in the Hydrometer method to test the possibility for rapid appraisal of quality fineness of BS cement. Results showed that if the one fifth graph of the density and fineness correlation were to be used, a rapid appraisal of BS cement fineness quality would be possible.

  • The purpose of the study was to examine engineering characteristics due to fine particle cement and gypsum contents to improve early strength of concrete substituted blast furnace slag powder. The results were as follows. Above all, For fluidity, generally all mixtures had lower fluidity than Plain mixture and was not satisfied target scope, but for mixture substituted the gypsum showed a little increasing trend. For air content, generally all mixtures compared to Plain mixture had decreasing tendency. However, all mixtures were satisfied target scope. For compressive strength, long-term strength was better than early strength according to ternary blast furnace slag contents was increased. For complex mixture was better than individual use of gypsum and fine particle cement.
