Alkali-activated binder (AAB) is recently being considered as a sustainable alternative to portland cement (PC) due to its low carbon dioxide emission and diversion of industrial wastes and by-products such as fly ash and slag from landfills. In order to comprehend the behavior of AAB, detailed knowledge on relations between microstructure and mechanical properties are important. To address the issue, a new approach to characterize hardened pastes of AAB containing fly ash as well as those containing fly ash and slag was adopted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectra microanalyses. The volume stoichiometries of the alkali activation reactions were used to estimate the quantities of the sodium aluminosilicate (N-A-S-H) and calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) produced by these reactions. The 3D plots of Si/Al, Na/Al and Ca/Si atom ratios given by the microanalyses were compared with the estimated quantities of CSH(S) to successfully determine the unique chemical compositions of the N-A-S-H and CSH(S) for ten different AAB at three different curing temperatures using a constrained nonlinear least squares optimization formulation by general algebraic modeling system. The results show that the theoretical and experimental quantities of N-A-S-H and CSH(S) were in close agreement with each other. The $R^2$ values were 0.99 for both alkali-activated fly ash and alkali-activated slag binders.
In this study, eleven reinforced concrete beams, ground granulated blast furnace slag, replacing recycled coarse aggregate (BRS series) and recycled coarse aggregate with steel fiber (BSRS series), and standard specimen (BSS) were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. Experimental programs were carried out to improve and evaluate the shear performance of such test specimens, such as the load-displacement, the failure mode and the maximum load carrying capacity. All the specimens were modeled in 1/2 scale-down size. Test results showed that test specimens (BSRS Series) was increased the compressive strength by 9%, the maximum load carrying capacity by 1~6% and the ductility capacity by 1.02~1.13 times in comparison with the standard specimen (BSS). And the specimens (BSRS Series) showed enough ductile behavior and stable flexural failure.

This study evaluates the shear performance of reinforced concrete beams with electric arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregates generated from iron manufacture. A total of six simple supported specimens were cast and tested in shear. The main test variables were the type of aggregates and the amount of shear reinforcements. The specimens under four point loading had a shear span-to-depth ratio of 2.5 and a rectangular section with a width of 200mm and an effective depth of 300mm. Existing equations to predict the shear strength of the specimens were used in this study. Furthermore, a finite element analysis using shear analytical model was performed to trace the shear behavior of the specimens with electric arc furnace oxidizing aggregates. From the test results, the shear performance of specimens with electric arc furnace oxidizing aggregates is similar to that of specimens with natural aggregates.

In this study, thirteen reinforced concrete beams, ground granulated blast furnace slag, replacing recycled coarse aggregate with PVA fiber (BSPG series) and recycled coarse aggregate with hybrid fiber ($BSPGR_1$, $BSPGR_2$ series), and standard specimen (BSS) were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. Experimental programs were carried out to improve and evaluate the Structural performance of such test specimens, such as the load-displacement, the failure mode, and the maximum load carrying capacity. All the specimens were modeled in 1/2 scale-down size. Test results showed that test specimens ($BSPGR_1$, $BSPGR_2$ series) was increased the compressive strength by 13%, the maximum load carrying capacity by 4~21% and the ductility capacity by 4~28% in comparison with the standard specimen (BSS). And the specimens ($BSPGR_1$, $BSPGR_2$ series) showed enough ductile behavior and stable flexural failure.
Mathematical models for char-slag interaction and near-wall particle segregation developed by Montagnaro et. al. were applied to predict various aspects of coal gasification in an up-flow entrained gasifier of commercial scale. For this purpose, some computer simulations were performed using gPROMS as the numerical solver. Typical design parameters and operating conditions of the commercial gasifiers were used as input values for the simulation. Development of a densely dispersed phase of solid carbon was found to have a critical effect on both carbon conversion and ash flow behavior. In general, such a slow-moving phase was turned out to enhance carbon conversion by lengthening the residence time of char or soot particles. Furthermore, it was also found that guiding the transfer of char or soot into the closer part of the wall to coal burner is favorable in terms of gasification efficiency and vitrified ash collection. Finally, to a certain degree densely dispersed phase of carbon showed an yield-enhancing effect of syngas.

In this study, the effects of blast furnance slag cement and frost-resistant accelerator on shrinkage properties and shrinkage properties of mortar were examined. As a result, the addition of the frost-resistant accelerator to both OPC and BB has a small effect on the flash properties of mortar and the compressive strength increases from the early ages. In addition, when a frost-resistant accelerator is used in excess of the standard usage amount, it is necessary to examine the relationship of the expansion behavior at the early age, especially, between the compressive strength development and the expansion property. And it was confirmed that the addition of the frost-resistant accelerator tended to increase the shrinkage of mortar using the OPC and BB. With the addition of the frost-resistant accelerator, the amount of pores with a diameter of under the 30nm, especially, the amount of pores with a diameter of 20 to 30nm and the amount of pores with an ink-bottle decrease, and the shrinkage increases. And it is considered that a change in the amount this range of pores has a large effect on the shrinkage property.
Due to enhanced construction requirement, ready mixed concrete are being popular day by day. The current study aimed to develop ready mixed concrete using GBFS contained cement and determine its properties of fresh and hardened states. A real scale experiment was set up in a ready mixed plant for measuring workability and compressive strength. The workability was tested after mixing (within 5 minutes), 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 minutes of the running of bulk carrier. The ready mixed carrier employed spinning motion i.e., rotating around its axis with 20 RPM and running on road with 1km/h speed. The mixing ratio of cement: sand:gravel, water to cement ratio, super plasticizer were, 1:1.73:2.47, 0.40 and 6% of cement, respectively. The chemical composition of raw material was determined using XRF and the properties of cements were measured according to ASTM standards. The experimental results confirm that the cement with composition of 6.89% of GBFS, 4% of Gypsum and 89.11% of clinker showed the good compressive strength and workability of concrete after 150 minutes of the spinning motion in bulk carrier.
This research paper presents the outcomes in terms of mechanical and microstructural characteristics of binary and ternary concrete when exposed to elevated temperature. Three parameter were taken into account, (a) elevated temperature (i.e., 200, 400, 600 and 800℃) (b) binary concrete with cementitious material sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) replacement percentage (i.e., 0, 15, 20, 25 and 30%) and (c) ternary concrete with cementitious material SCBA and GGBFS replacement percentage (i.e., 0, 15, 20, 25 and 30%). A total of 285 standard cube specimens (150 mm × 150 mm × 150 mm) containing Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), SCBA, and GGBFS were made. These specimens then exposed to several elevated temperatures for 2 h, afterword is allowed to cool at room temperature. The following basic physical, mechanical, and microstructural characteristics were then determined and discussed. (a) mass loss ratio, (b) ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) (c) physical behavior, (d) compressive strength, and (e) field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). It was found that compressive strength increases up to 400℃; beyond this temperature, it decreases. UPV value and massloss decrease with increase in temperature as well as the change in color and crack were observed at a higher temperature.
The Corrosion behavior of the matrix of the $\rho$-alumina bonded alumina vibrated castable was, on the basis of Jabsen's theory, elucidated by use of the Kingery's reaction mechanism. Corrosion of the matrix during induction period was controlled by the molecular diffusion. The temperature dependence of activation process is well established by the Arrhenius plots. The difference of Ca concentration between slag and interface is 23.2%, which causes a driving force of the materials transfer. The extent of the corrosion of the matrix is more deeper than that of the sintered mullite, but the corrosion mechanism can be well employed as the reaction mechanism proposed by the Kingery. The life time of the castable may be well estimated by the corrosion mechanism of Kingery.
