  • This study, it was tried to evaluate the asphalt behavior under tensile loading conditions through indirect Brazilian and direct tensile tests, experimentally and numerically. This paper is important from two points of view. The first one, a new test method was developed for the determination of the direct tensile strength of asphalt and its difference was obtained from the indirect test method. The second one, the effects of particle size and loading rate have been cleared on the tensile fracture mechanism. The experimental direct tensile strength of the asphalt specimens was measured in the laboratory using the compression-to-tensile load converting (CTLC) device. Some special types of asphalt specimens were prepared in the form of slabs with a central hole. The CTLC device is then equipped with this specimen and placed in the universal testing machine. Then, the direct tensile strength of asphalt specimens with different sizes of ingredients can be measured at different loading rates in the laboratory. The particle flow code (PFC) was used to numerically simulate the direct tensile strength test of asphalt samples. This numerical modeling technique is based on the versatile discrete element method (DEM). Three different particle diameters were chosen and were tested under three different loading rates. The results show that when the loading rate was 0.016 mm/sec, two tensile cracks were initiated from the left and right of the hole and propagated perpendicular to the loading axis till coalescence to the model boundary. When the loading rate was 0.032 mm/sec, two tensile cracks were initiated from the left and right of the hole and propagated perpendicular to the loading axis. The branching occurs in these cracks. This shows that the crack propagation is under quasi-static conditions. When the loading rate was 0.064 mm/sec, mixed tensile and shear cracks were initiated below the loading walls and branching occurred in these cracks. This shows that the crack propagation is under dynamic conditions. The loading rate increases and the tensile strength increases. Because all defects mobilized under a low loading rate and this led to decreasing the tensile strength. The experimental results for the direct tensile strengths of asphalt specimens of different ingredients were in good accordance with their corresponding results approximated by DEM software.

  • In this study, a series of push-off tests for lean concrete, aggregate, asphalt subbases mainly used in Korea were performed to investigate the friction characteristics between the slab and subbase layers. Use of separation membrane and wet condition of subbase were other parameters in the tests. Horizontal displacements of the slabs and friction coefficients were measured at 1st loading, stable condition (2nd and 3rd loadings), and wet condition (4th loading) by applying 40mm/hour horizontal loadings. Larger maximum friction coefficients were measured in order of the lean concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and subbases using the separation membrane at 1st loading, and in order of the asphalt, aggregate, lean concrete, and subbases using the separation membrane at stable and wet conditions. The friction coefficients of the aggregate and asphalt subbases which did not used the separation membrane decreased by the wet condition while the subbases using the separation membrane were not affected. Additional push-off tests for effects of slab thickness and temperature sensitivity of asphalt will be performed. And, effects of the friction characteristics between the slab and subbase layers on behavior and performance of concrete pavements will be investigated by structural analyses using the test results.

  • Generally, poly-urea is widely used as waterproof coating material due to its superior adhesiveness, elongation capacity, and permeability resistance. In addition, it can be quickly and easily applied on structure surfaces using spray application. Since it hardens in about 30 seconds after application, its construction efficiency is very high and its usage as a special functional material is also excellent. However, currently, poly-urea is mostly used as waterproof coating material and the researches on its usage as a retrofitting material is lacking at best. Therefore, basic studies on the use of poly-urea as a general structural retrofitting material are needed urgently. The objective of this study is to develop most optimum poly-urea composition for structure retrofitting purpose. Moreover, the structural strengthening capacity of the developed poly-urea is evaluated through flexural capacity experiments on RC beams and RC slabs. From the results of the flexural test of poly-urea strengthened RC beam and slab specimens, the poly-urea and concrete specimen showed monolithic behavior where ductility and ultimate strength of the poly-urea strengthened specimen showed slight increase. However, the doubly reinforced specimens with FRP sheet and poly-urea showed lower capacity than that of the specimen reinforced only with FRP sheet.

  • Recently, 3D laser scanning technology, which can collect accurate and quick information on phenomena, has been attracting attention among smart construction technologies. 3D laser scanning technology can obtain information most similar to reality at construction sites. In this study, we would like to apply a new member identification method to an actual building and present the possibility of applying point cloud data, which can be collected using 3D laser scanning technology, to measuring progress at construction sites. In order to carry out the research, we collected location information for component identification from BIM, set a recognition margin for the collected location information, and proceeded to identify the components that make up the building from point cloud data. Research results We confirmed that the columns, beams, walls, and slabs that make up a building can be identified from point cloud data. The identification results can be used to confirm all the parts that have been completed in the actual building, and can be used in conjunction with the unit price of each part in the project BOQ for prefabricated calculations. In addition, the point cloud data obtained through research can be used as accurate data for quality control monitoring of construction sites and building maintenance management. The research results can contribute to improving the timeliness and accuracy of construction information used in future project applications.

  • In this study, Tridimensional Hybrid Isolation System(THIS) was proposed as a vibration isolator for traffic loads, combining vertical and horizontal isolation systems. Its efficacy in improving serviceability for vertical vibration was analytically evaluated. Firstly, for the analysis, the major vibration modes of the existing apartment were identified through eigenvalue analysis for the system and pulse response analysis for the bedroom slab using commercial structural analysis software. Subsequently, a 16-story model with horizontal, vertical and rotational degrees of freedom for each slab was numerically organized to represent the achieved modes. The dynamic analysis for the measured acceleration from an adjacent ground to high-speed railway was performed by state-space equations with the stiffness and damping ratio of THIS as variables. The result indicated that as the vertical period ratio increased, the threshold period ratio where the slab response started to be suppressed varied. Specifically, when the period ratio is greater than or equal to 5, the acceleration levels of all slabs decreased to approximately 70% or less compared to the non-isolated condition. On the other hand, it was ascertained that the influence of damping ratios on the response control of THIS is inconsequential in the analysis. Finally, the improvement in vertical vibration performance of THIS was evaluated according to design guidelines for floor vibration of AIJ, SCI and AISC. It was confirmed that, after the application of THIS, the residential performance criteria were met, whereas the non-isolated structure failed to satisfy them.

  • Purpose: Research and development of high-strength concrete enables high-rise buildings and reduces the self-weight of the structure by reducing the cross-section, thereby reducing the thickness of beams and slabs to build more floors. A large effective space can be secured and the amount of reinforcement and concrete used to designate the base surface can be reduced. Method: In terms of field construction and quality, the effect of reducing the occurrence of drying shrinkage can be confirmed by studying the combination of low water bonding ratio and minimizing bleeding on the concrete surface. Result: The ease of site construction was confirmed due to the high self-charging property due to the increased fluidity by using high-performance water reducing agents, and the advantage of shortening the time to remove the formwork by expressing the early strength of concrete was confirmed. These experimental results show that the field application of ultra-high-strength concrete with a design standard strength of 100 MPa or higher can be expanded in high-rise buildings. Through this study, we experimented and evaluated whether ultra-high-strength concrete with a strength of 130 MPa or higher, considering the applicability of high-rise buildings with more than 120 floors in Korea, could be applied in the field. Conclusion: This study found the optimal mixing ratio studied by various methods of indoor basic experiments to confirm the applicability of ultra-high strength, produced 130MPa ultra-high strength concrete at a ready-mixed concrete factory similar to the real size, and tested the applicability of concrete to the fluidity and strength expression and hydration heat.

  • This study analytically analyzed the impact of underground structure displacement behavior on track damage due to adjacent excavation work, ground deterioration, and changes in groundwater level. The concrete track that was the subject of the study was analyzed for sleeper floating track(STEDEF) and precast concrete slab track(B2S). Sleeper floating track is a track structure in which the concrete bed and sleepers are voided. precast concrete slab track is a track structure that induces the elastic behavior of the rail by assembling rails and fasteners using slabs. For numerical analysis, each concrete track, from rail to concrete bed, was modeled as three-dimensional elements. In addition, the displacement behavior of the underground structure was set as a variable to analyze the damage effect on the concrete bed. Using numerical analysis, the concrete bed stress due to uplift and subsidence was analyzed, and the level of crack effect was analyzed by comparing it to the tensile strength and shear strength. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the sleeper floating track was more vulnerable than the precast concrete slab track when the same uplift and subsidence occurred. In addition, uplift and subsidence, it was analyzed that the cracks range in the sleeper floating track was large.

  • This study aims to analyze the supply and demand trends and regional distribution characteristics of the stone industry through transaction records of the domestic natural stone market. The demand for natural stone is increasing globally, but domestic stone producers are facing financial difficulties due to the influx of low-cost stone, and the government is implementing various support policies, such as mandating the use of domestic stone. However, the influx of low-cost stones has led to management deterioration for domestic stone producers, prompting the government to implement various support policies such as mandating the use of domestic stones. An analysis of the natural stone transaction records from the Public Procurement Service revealed that granite was the main type of rock. The main trading items were natural stone curbs and natural stone slabs, with an average annual transaction amount of approximately 312.8 billion KRW from 2017 to 2021. A comparison of the stone distribution status between the metropolitan area and non-metropolitan areas showed that the metropolitan area had high demand, while non-metropolitan areas served as major supply sources. Cities such as Pocheon in Gyeonggi-do, Iksan in Jeollabuk-do, and Geochang in Gyeongsangnam-do play important roles as major stone suppliers. Based on these results, this study proposes fostering the stone industry tailored to regional characteristics, diversifying distribution channels, and establishing a sustainable supply chain for the sustainable development of the stone industry. Additionally, it emphasizes the need for close cooperation and support among the government, industry, and research institutions.

  • This study examined a technique for cooling root zone aimed at lowering substrate temperature for sweet pepper (Capsicum annum L. 'Orange glory') cultivation in coir substrate hydroponics during hot season, from the $16^{th}$ of July to $15^{th}$ of October in 2012. The root zone cooling technique was applied by using an air duct (${\varnothing}12$ cm, hole size 0.1 mm) to blow cool air between two slabs during night (5p.m. to 3a.m.). Between the $23^{rd}$ of July and $31^{st}$ of August (hot temperature period), average daily substrate temperature was $24.7^{\circ}C$ under the root zone cooling, whereas it was $28.2^{\circ}C$ under condition of no cooling (control). In sunny day (600~700 W $m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$), average substrate temperatures during the day (6a.m. to 8p.m.) and night (8p.m. to 6a.m.) were lower about $1.7^{\circ}C$ and $3.3^{\circ}C$, respectively, under the cooling treatment, compared to that of control. The degree of temperature reduction in the substrate was averagely $0.5^{\circ}C$ per hour under the cooling treatment during 6p.m. to 8p.m.; however, there was no decrease in the temperature under the control. The temperature difference between the cooling and control treatments was $1.3^{\circ}C$ and $0.6^{\circ}C$ in the upper and lower part of the slab, respectively. During the hot temperature period, about 32.5% reduction in the substrate temperature was observed under the cooling treatment, compared to the control. Photosynthesis, transpiration rate, and leaf water potential of plants grown under the cooling treatment were significantly higher than those under the control. The first flowering date in the cooling was faster about 4 days than in the control. Also, the number of fruits was significantly higher than that in the control. No differences in plant height, stem thickness, number of internode, and leaf width were found between the plants grown under the cooling and control, except for the leaf length with a shorter length under the cooling treatment. However, root zone cooling influenced negligibly on eliminating delay in fruiting caused by excessively higher air temperature (> $28^{\circ}C$), although the substrate temperature was reduced by $3^{\circ}C$ to $5.6^{\circ}C$. These results suggest that the technique of lowering substrate temperature by using air-duct blow needs to be incorporated into the lowering growing temperature system for growth and fruit set of health paprika.

  • Skew bridges are found frequently in new bridge construction due to geographical conditions when new constructing bridges are put across the existing highways, railroads or rivers. This study is to investigate the static behaviors of the steel deck plates of skew bridges which are increasingly used in bridges due to outstanding quality of structural steels, development of welding techniques, in order to reduce dead loads and period of constructions. The static behaviours of steel deck plates are analyzed using general purpose FE code SAP90 by modeling the skewed deck plates with rigorous finite elements, as the skew angles vary. The results of finite element analysis for the behaviors of steel deck plates and concrete slabs in acute, obtuse corners and center of decks are compared and discussed as the skew angles vary from $90^{\circ}$ to $30^{\circ}$. Two types of decks are treated, as isotropic plates and orthotropic plates, respectively. From the results of finite element analysis, it is found that more moments, reactions, and deflections occur at the obtuse corners than at the center of skewed decks regardless of isotropy or orthotropy. Especially, in case of the skewed deck plates with skew angles less than 45 degrees, significantly large discrepancies for the values of those internal forces are shown between the skewed and right deck plates. This study estimates the characteristics of deck behaviors according to skew angles, and proposes limitations of skew angles and the ciritical regions of decks.
