This study examines the relationship between three-dimensional urban built environment and urban surface temperature using LANDSAT 8 satellite image data in Seoul city. The image was divided into 600m×600m grid units as an unit of analysis. Due to the high level of spatial dependency in surface temperature, this study uses spatial statistics to take into account spatial auto-correlation. The spatial error model shows the best goodness of fit. The analysis results show that the three-dimensional built environment and transport environment as well as natural environment have statistically significant associations with surface temperature. First, natural environment variables such as green space, streams and river, and average elevation show statistically significant negative association with surface temperature. Second, the building area shows a positive association with surface temperature. In addition, while sky view factor (SVF) has a positive association with surface temperature, surface roughness (SR) shows a negative association with it. Third, transportation related variables such as road density, railway density, and traffic volume show positive associations with surface temperature. Moreover, this study finds that SVF and SR have different effects on surface temperature in regard to the levels of total floor areas in built environment. The results indicate that interactions between floor area ratio (FAR) and three-dimensional built environmental variables such as SVF and SR should be considered to reduce urban surface temperature.

A decrease in the paraspinal muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and functional cross-sectional area (FCSA) are associated with low back pain and disc herniation in humans. This study examined whether chronicity or lateralization of disc herniation affects the CSA and FCSA of the paraspinal muscles. The CSA and FCSA of the paraspinal muscles between the 12th and 13th thoracic vertebrae were measured in 31 dogs with intervertebral disc herniation (IVDH). The muscle CSA and FCSA were evaluated by dividing the values of the body weight, spinal disc CSA, and spinal canal CSA to offset the differences in body type between subjects. In the chronic IVDH group, the ratio of the paraspinal muscle CSA divided by the body weight was significantly lower, and fat infiltration in the paraspinal muscle was significantly higher than in the acute group. The lateralization of the disc herniation was significantly related to the changes in the paraspinal muscle CSA. In the right-sided disc herniation group, right epaxial muscle CSA was significantly reduced compared to the left-sided disc herniation group. The change in the paraspinal muscle might be a helpful indicator to localize less obvious disc pathologies and target the search for the pathology responsible for disc-related symptoms in dogs.

There are a huge number of faint objects that have not been observed due to the lack of large and deep surveys. In this study, we demonstrate that a deep learning approach can produce a better quality deep image from a single pass imaging so that could be an alternative of conventional image stacking technique or the expensive large and deep surveys. Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) stripe 82 which provide repeatedly scanned imaging data, a training data set is constructed: g-, r-, and i-band images of single pass data as an input and r-band co-added image as a target. Out of 151 SDSS fields that have been repeatedly scanned 34 times, 120 fields were used for training and 31 fields for validation. The size of a frame selected for the training is 1k by 1k pixel scale. To avoid possible problems caused by the small number of training sets, frames are randomly selected within that field each iteration of training. Every 5000 iterations of training, the performance were evaluated with RMSE, peak signal-to-noise ratio which is given on logarithmic scale, structural symmetry index (SSIM) and difference in SSIM. We continued the training until a GAN model with the best performance is found. We apply the best GAN-model to NGC0941 located in SDSS stripe 82. By comparing the radial surface brightness and photometry error of images, we found the possibility that this technique could generate a deep image with statistics close to the stacked image from a single-pass image.
Direct, continuous, and accurate measurements of solar ultraviolet irradiance (290-400 nm: UVR) have been carried out since 1990, by using both band-spectral ultraviolet-B (290-320 nm: UV-B) and ultraviolet-A (320-400 nm: UV-A) radiometers at Tokai University in Hiratsuka, Japan (35$^{\circ}$N, 139$^{\circ}$E). From our observations, the following findings are provided: 1) an increasing trend in solar UV -B from Oct. 1990 to Sept. 2000; 2) a regional comparison of solar UVR in Japan; 3) the distinct characteristics of UV-B and UV-A irradiance, such as diffuse property, daily and seasonal variation; and 4) human body protection against solar UVR. An increasing 10-year trend in global solar UV - B in Hiratsuka corresponded to a decrease in the total ozone amount measured at Tsukuba (36$^{\circ}$N, 140$^{\circ}$E), giving supportive evidence for a direct link between these two parameters. Furthermore, a strong correlation was found between solar UV-B and total ozone amount from results of UVR measurements at four Tokai University monitoring stations dispersed throughout Japan. Additional results revealed different diffuse properties in global solar UV and in global solar total (300-3000 nm: Total) irradiances. For example, in the global UVR, the diffuse component was dominant: about 80 % independent of weather, with more than 60 % of global UV-B, and more than 50% of global UV-A with even a cloudless clear sky. On the other hand, the portion of the diffuse in the global total irradiance was very low, less than 10 % on a cloudless clear day. Daily and seasonal variations of UV -B and UV -A irradiances were found to be quite different, because of the marked dependence of UV -B irradiance on the atmospheric ozone amount. Moreover, UV -B irradiance showed large daily and seasonal variations: the ratio between maximum and minimum irradiances was more than 5. In contrast, the variation in UV-A was small: the ratio between maximum and minimum was less than 2. Three important facts are proposed concerning solar UVR protection of the human body: 1) the personal minimal erythema dose (MED); 2) gender based difference in MED values; and 3) proper colors for UVR protective clothing.

This research uses numerical analysis to examine the tunnel portal landscape affecting the brightness level of interior lighting when designing lights for road tunnels through the L20 method. In order to extract the brightness recognition per form of a tunnel entrance and to evaluate the effects of the characteristics of the materials of facilities near a tunnel portal, brightness analysis was conducted by filming brightness on a video photometer called Hi-land Elf System, and a surface brightness photometer called LMK Mobile Advanced. Tunnels in Korea are mostly distributed in mountain areas; thus, the ratio occupied by the sky, which has the highest brightness within the angle of L20, is close to zero, while most of the ratio was occupied by brightness by the area near the tunnel entrance or road surface. However, for a tunnel portal retaing wall, which allows the width of a tunnel entrance to seem wider within the L20 angle, appeared to be have higher brightness compared to nearby areas or the surface, which is an element increasing the tunnel portal brightness within the tunnel, and the road facilities near the tunnel portal appeared to have an effect on the brightness as well. Thus, when designing tunnel lights based on brightness, the form of the tunnel entrance and the area width, material, and color of areas near the tunnel portal appeared to affect outside brightness and become an element affecting the establishment of the brightness level of the interior lights of tunnels. Consequently, reviewing such matters is a prerequisite when designing tunnel portal landscape.

This study suggests deep neural network models for estimating air temperature with Level 1B (L1B) datasets of GEO-KOMPSAT-2A (GK-2A). The temperature at 1.5 m above the ground impact not only daily life but also weather warnings such as cold and heat waves. There are many studies to assume the air temperature from the land surface temperature (LST) retrieved from satellites because the air temperature has a strong relationship with the LST. However, an algorithm of the LST, Level 2 output of GK-2A, works only clear sky pixels. To overcome the cloud effects, we apply a deep neural network (DNN) model to assume the air temperature with L1B calibrated for radiometric and geometrics from raw satellite data and compare the model with a linear regression model between LST and air temperature. The root mean square errors (RMSE) of the air temperature for model outputs are used to evaluate the model. The number of 95 in-situ air temperature data was 2,496,634 and the ratio of datasets paired with LST and L1B show 42.1% and 98.4%. The training years are 2020 and 2021 and 2022 is used to validate. The DNN model is designed with an input layer taking 16 channels and four hidden fully connected layers to assume an air temperature. As a result of the model using 16 bands of L1B, the DNN with RMSE 2.22℃ showed great performance than the baseline model with RMSE 3.55℃ on clear sky conditions and the total RMSE including overcast samples was 3.33℃. It is suggested that the DNN is able to overcome cloud effects. However, it showed different characteristics in seasonal and hourly analysis and needed to append solar information as inputs to make a general DNN model because the summer and winter seasons showed a low coefficient of determinations with high standard deviations.
Synthetic Aperture Radar is able to provide images of wide coverage in day, night, and all-weather conditions. Recently, as the SAR image resolution improves up to the sub-meter level, their applications are rapidly expanding accordingly. Especially there is a growing interest in the use of geographic information of high resolution SAR images and the change detection will be one of the most important technique for their applications. In this paper, an automatic threshold tracking and change detection algorithm is proposed applicable to high-resolution SAR images. To detect changes within SAR image, a reference image is generated using log-ratio operator and its amplitude distribution is estimated through K-S test. Assuming SAR image has a non-gaussian amplitude distribution, a generalized thresholding technique is applied using Kittler and Illingworth minimum-error estimation. Also, MoLC parametric estimation method is adopted to improve the algorithm performance on rough ground target. The implemented algorithm is tested and verified on the simulated SAR raw data. Then, it is applied to the spaceborne high-resolution SAR images taken by Cosmo-Skymed and KOMPSAT-5 and the performances are analyzed and compared.

BACKGROUND: Burcucumber(Sicyos angulatus L.) is an invasive plant species and disturbs ecosystems in Korea. The main method for prevention of burcucumber is cutting or pulling out. However, the studies accounting for the use of the by-product of burcucumber after cutting remain incomplete. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the applicability of burcucumber as a substitute for nitrogen fertilizer.METHODS AND RESULTS: Burcucmber plants only including stem, leaves, and petiole were collected from the Sky Park in Seoul and divided in to three categories based on the length of stem of burcucumber; 10-30 cm, 30-100 cm, and 100-200 cm. And they were input into soil with 20 kg-N/10 a. After 4 weeks aging, chemical properties of treated soils and the productivity of lettuce(Lactuca sativa L.) were examined. Both the inorganic nitrogen contents in soils and the growth of lettuce were increased with the decreases in length of burcucumber standing for young plant. And the inorganic nitrogen content and the productivity of lettuce were positively correlated(r= 0.9409).CONCLUSION: The C/N ratio of burcucumber was low, indicating fast decomposition and nitrogen supplying rate, resulting in the increase in lettuce growth. Burcucumber could be a good substitute for nitrogen organic fertilizer.
The Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) which is the Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectrometer has been operated by the National Institute of Meteorological Research (NIMR) in Anmyeon island, South Korea since June 2010. The ground-based AERI with similar hyper-spectral infrared sensor to satellite could be an alternative way to validate satellite-based remote sensing. In this regard, the NIMR has focused on the improvement of Cloud data Filtering Method (CFM) which employed only one reference spectrum of clear sky in winter season. This study suggests Seasonal-Cloud data Filtering Method (S-CFM) which applied seasonal AERI reference spectra. For the comparison of applied S-CFM and CFM, the methane retrievals (surface volume mixing ratio) from AERI spectra are used. The quality of AERI methane retrieval applied S-CFM was significantly more improved than that of CFM. The positive result of S-CFM is similar pattern with the seasonal variation of methane from ground-based in-situ measurement, even if the summer season's methane is retrieved over-estimation. In addition, the comparison of vertical total column of methane from AERI and GOSAT shows good result except for the summer season.
When it comes to these buildings for business use, cooling load during summertime was reported to have great importance which, as a result, impressively increased interest in Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). Such SHGC is considered to be lowered with the help of colors and functions of glass itself, internal shading devices, insulation films and others but basically, these external shading devices for initial blocking that would not allow solar heat to come in from outside the buildings are determined to be most effective. Of many different external shading devices, this thesis conducted an analysis on Exterior Venetian Blind. As for vertical shading devices, previous researches already calculated SHGC conveniently using concepts of sky-opening ratios. However in terms of the Venetian Blind, such correlation is not possibly applied. In light of that, in order to extract a valid correlation, this study first introduced a concept called shape factor, which would use the breadth and a space of a shade, before carrying out the analysis. As a consequence, the concept helped this study to find a very similar correlation. Results of the analysis are summarized as follows. (1) Regarding SHGC depending on the surface reflectance of a shade, an average of 2% error is observed and yet, the figure can always be ignored when it comes to a simple calculation. (2) As for SHGC of each bearing, this study noticed deviations of 4% or less and in the end, it is confirmed that extraction can be achieved with no more than one correlation formula. (3) When only the shape factor and nothing else is used for finding a correlation formula, the formula with a deviation of approximately 5% or less is what one would expect. (4) Since the study observed slight differences in bearings depending on ranges of the shape factors, it needed to extract a weighted value of each bearing, and learned that the smaller the shape factor, the wider the range of a weighted value. The study now suggests that a follow-up research to extract a simple calculation formula by dealing with all these various inclined angles of shade, solar radiation conditions of each region (the ratio of diffuse radiation to direct radiation and others) as well as seasonal features should be carried out.
