Retinoids are essential regulators of spithelial cell growth and celluar differentiation. They are also known to be effective in photoaging. It was reported that topical application of retinoic acid improves facial wrinkle carsed by collagen synthesis reduction in photodamaged skin. Collagen synthesis by retinoic acid may contribute to the wrinkle effacement. Since celluar retinoic acid binding protein II is slsctively induced in human skin and dermal fibroblasts in vitro by retinoic acid, this response can be used to mesure retinoids potency and activity. In order to know the activity of retinoids and their relations with collagen synthesis, we treated dermal fibroblasts with retinoids for 48 hours at 10-6-10-7M and measured CRABPII mRNA level by quantitative Nortern blotting. We also measured the rate of collagen systhesis by retinoids using 3-dimensional dermal equivalent. CRABPII mRNA level was increased 3-fold by retinoic acid, 2.1-fold by retinol and 1.4-fold by retinaldehyde. Collagen systhesis was increased 34% by all-trans retinioc acid, 26% by retinol, 17% by retinaldehyde and 7% by retinyl palmitate. From the above results, retinoids were found to be a potent indecers of CRABPII mRNA and collagen synthesis. Though retinoic acid was the most effective, its use has been restricted because of the side effects. Instead, retinol can be a best candidate in cosmetics for the treatment of photodamaged skin in terms of efficacy and safety.
Objectives : This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Polygonum cuspidatum extract on several skin functions including inflammation and wrinkle formation. Methods : To investigate in vitro anti-oxidant activity assay, ethanol extracts of medicinal plants tested by DPPH method. In the next experiment, to investigate anti-inflammatory test, the RAW 264.7 macrophage cells was cultured using DMEM including the 10% FBS. To study anti-allergic effect, we blended cultured Human Mast Cells(HMC-1), and then observe $TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-8 by ELISA Results : Polygonum Cuspidatum extract has the effects of anti-inflammation and anti-allergy, which may be due to its inhibitory potential on the macrophage activation. Furthermore, Polygonum Cuspidatum extract has the anti-wrinkle effects through the inhibitory potential on the collagnease, elastase and gelatinase activities. Conclusions : The above results suggest that Polygonum Cuspidatum extract could be applicable for improvement of several skin functions.

Assurance of the objectivity and reproducibility is a major key point in wrinkle measurement used for evaluating the degree of skin aging. The measurement of relief is quickly converted to a non-contact method, of which tools or instruments do not come in contact with skin directly, to minimize the artificial effects which influence the shape or depth of the relief. Here, we showed how wrinkle measurement techniques have been changed briefly and compared PRIMOS and replica method in the point of view of measurement principle and features, the former is non-contact fringe projection tool and the latter is contact type of the method.

Recently, the demands for the effective and safe depigmentating and anti-aging agents of the skin have increased due to the medical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic reasons. The aim of this study is to search Galla Rhois (GR) inhibitory activity against aging process of skin in vitro. GR was screened for their inhibitory activity against elastase. GR (final concentration 1 mg/ml) appeared over 40% of inhibition of elastase activity. So we investigated anti wrinkle effects of GR look through MMP-1 inhibition activity. Also Extracts of GR showed higher anti-tyrosinase activity than arbutin (final concentration 1 mg/ml). These results suggest that GR could be potential sources of anti-aging and whitening effects for the skin. Objective : Galla Rhois extracts, Elastase (pancreatic from porcine pancreas), N-Succinyl-(Ala)3-p-nitroanilide, Ursolic acid, mushroom tyrosinase, L-tyrosine, arbutin, Amicon Ultra, Hand Hold UV lamp, MMP-1 primary antibody, MMP-1 secondary antibody Result : 1. GR appeared over 40% of elastase inhibitory activity. 2. GR had MMP-1 inhibition activity. 3. GR showed higher anti-tyrosinase activity than arbutin. Conclusion : According to above results, it is supposed that Galla Rhois could be strong potential sources of anti-aging and whitening effects for the skin.

Skin is continuously exposed to a variety of environmental stresses, including ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UVB is an inherent component of sunlight that crosses the epidermis and reaches the upper dermis, leading to increased oxidative stress, activation of inflammatory response and accumulation of DNA damage among other effects. In the present study, the anti-wrinkle mechanism of Acorus gramineus callus culture supernatant (GB-AGS-PSC) was elucidated in UVB treated HaCaT keratinocytes. GB-AGS-PSC prevented the matrix metalloprotease 1 (MMP-1), elastin, and pro-collagen product and cytotoxicity and SOD inhibition. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction showed that GB-AGS-PSC-treated cells displayed dose-dependent increase in messenger RNA expression levels of Aquaporin 3 (AQP3), Keratin 1(KRT1), fillagrin, and hyaluronan synthase-2 (HAS 2) and decreased expression levels of matrix metalloproteinase-3, -9, and -13 in UVB treated HaCaT keratinocytes. Additionally, GB-AGS-PSC suppressed TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-8 product for inflammatory responses in UVB treated HaCaT keratinocytes. Therefore, GB-AGS-PSC may be useful as an anti-photoaging resource for the skin.

Soft-pressure sensors have numerous applications in soft robotics, biomedical devices, and wearable smart devices. Herein, we present a highly sensitive electronic skin device with an isotropic wrinkled pressure sensor. A conductive ink for soft pressure sensors is produced by a solution process using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), poly 3-hexylthiophene (P3HT), carbon black, and chloroform as the solvents. P3HT provides high reproducibility and conductivity by improving the ink dispersibility. The conductivity of the ink is optimized by adjusting the composition of the carbon black and PDMS. Soft lithography is used to fabricate a conductive elastic structure with an isotropic wrinkled structure. Two conductive elastic structures with an isotropic wrinkle structure is stacked to develop a pressure sensor, and it is confirmed that the isotropic wrinkle structure is more sensitive to pressure than when two elastic structures with an anisotropic wrinkle structure are overlapped. Specifically, the pressure sensor fabricated with an isotropic wrinkled structure can detect extremely low pressures (1.25 Pa). Additionally, the sensor has a high sensitivity of 15.547 kpa-1 from 1.25 to 2500 Pa and a linear sensitivity of 5.15 kPa-1 from 2500 Pa to 25 kPa.

Inositol and phytic acid extracted from rice bran were investigated for applying cosmetics. Skin lotions containing $0{\~}3.0\;wt\%$ inositol and $0{\~}1.50\;wt%$ phytic acid were applied respectively, to the arm skins of 45 Asian women 20'~40's for 7 weeks. Improvement on moisture was evaluated. In addition, improvements on sebum, elasticity, and wrinkle were examined after applying placebo, inositol and phytic acid-containing skin lotions tot face, respectively. For $1.0\;wt\%$ inositol, it resulted in $19\%$ increase of moisture. The wrinkle reduction and elasticity improved $12.4%\;and\;17.0\%$ on average, respec-tively. Applying $0.5\;wt\%$ phytic acid resulted in $71.6\%$ increase the moisture. Improvements on wrinkle and elasticity were $16.9%\;and\;21.9\%$ respectivelv. hpplving inositol or phytic acid regardless of dry or oily skin, resulted in sebum value recovery to that of the normal skin after 2~4 weeks. Although inositol is inferior to phytic acid in improvements of the skin, phytic acid is not suitable to sensitive skin. So, $0~0.50\;wt\%$ of phytic acid were added to $1.0\;wt\%$ inositol and similar experiments were carried out. In case of added $1.0\;wt\%$ phytic acid, moisture increased $63.8\%$ approximately. Improvements on elasticity and reduction on wrinkle were $17.2%\;and\;17.4\%,$ respectively. Both skin types were turned to normal skin type after 2 weeks. It could improve the skin condition when used inositol added phytic acid. The optimized concentration of phytic acid was $0.10\;wt\%\;with\;1.0\;wt\%$ of inositol without side effect.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to understand conspicuous features of geroderma with visceral manifestation theory(臟象論). Methods : We categorized skin aging into wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dry skin and face flush. After investigating the reason, histological changes and mechanism of each classification in western medicine, we interpreted them according to the malfunction of five viscera(五臟) in Korean medicine. Result : The results are as follows. 1. Pathologic change of dermis and subcutaneous fat makes wrinkles. We consider wrinkles as the malfunction of the spleen(脾). 2. Irregular synthesis and disproportion of melanin makes hyperpigmentation. We consider hyperpigmentation as the malfunction of the liver(肝). 3. Dry skin is attributed to a subtle disorder of epidermal maturation. We consider dry skin as the malfunction of the lung(肺). 4. Facial flush is detected in rosacea and menopausal hot flush, which are both related with blood vessel abnormality. We consider facial flush as the malfunction of the heart(心) Conclusion : We interpreted the pathologic changes and mechanism of skin aging in western medicine as the decrease of five viscera(五臟) in visceral manifestation theory(臟象論) of Korean medicine. Further studies are needed to apply these hypothesis to clinical diagnosis and treatment.

The effects of unripe apple mask pack made from unripe apple extracts on the skin status of middle-aged women for 4 weeks were investigated. The subjects were divided into three groups: placebo mask pack as the control (PM, n = 8), apple mask pack (AM, n = 16), and apple mask pack + apple intake (AAM, n = 12). The study included a survey questionnaire, and evaluations of nutrients intakes and of skin status. Skin status was measured by Aramo-TS. After 4 weeks, facial moisture, elasticity, evenness, and wrinkle level were improved in AM and AAM. The facial moisture level (AM: $+3.13\;{\pm}\;2.73$, AAM: $+2.25\;{\pm}\;2.93$) and elasticity level (AM: $+5.81\;{\pm}\;8.27$, AAM: $+5.50\;{\pm}\;6.13$) of AM (p < 0.001) and AAM (p < 0.05) were increased. The facial evenness level (AM: $-5.25\;{\pm}\;8.13$, AAM: $-9.17\;{\pm}\;4.26$) and wrinkle level (AM: $-10.88\;{\pm}\;11.74$, AAM: $-17.83\;{\pm}\;12.22$) were significantly decreased. AAM was more effective in improving skin elasticity, evenness, and wrinkle. The skin status of PM was not changed. While the macronutrient intakes of all the subjects were not different before and after the study, the daily intakes of some vitamins (vitamins $B_6$, C, and E and folic acid) during the study were significantly increased in AAM. These findings suggested that regular use of apple mask pack was effective in improving overall skin status. Furthermore, the consumption of apples with mask pack application was much better in improving skin status.
