Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of joint angle errors mainly due to skin artifact and measurement errors during gait analysis. Joint angle errors lead to unreliable kinematics and kinetic analyses in the investigation of human motion. The purpose of this paper is to present the Joint Averaging Coordinate System (JACS) method for human gait analysis. The JACS method is based on the concept of statistical data reduction of anatomically referenced marker data. Since markers are not attached to rigid bodies, different marker combinations lead to slightly different predictions of joint angles. These different combinations can be averaged in order to provide a "best" estimate of joint angle. Results of a gait analysis are presented using clinically meaningful terminology to provide better communication with clinical personal. In order to verify the developed JACS method, a simple three-dimensional knee joint contact model was developed, employing an absolute coordinate system without using any kinematics constraint in which thigh and shank segments can be derived independently. In the experimental data recovery, the separation and penetration distance of the knee joint is supposed to be zero during one gait cycle if there are no errors in the experimental data. Using the JACS method, the separation and penetration error was reduced compared to well-developed existing methods such as ACRS and Spoor & Veldpaus method. The separation and penetration distance ranged up to 15 mm and 12 mm using the Spoor & Veldpaus and ACRS method, respectively, compared to 9 mm using JACS method. Statistical methods like the JACS can be applied in conjunction with existing techniques that reduce systematic errors in marker location, leading to an improved assessment of human gait.
In order to evaluate the effects of vehicles and penetration enhancers on skin permeation of apomorphine, the skin permeation rates of apomorphine from vehicles of different composition were determined using Franz diffusion cells fitted with excised rat skins. Solubility of apomorphine in various solvents was investigated to select a vehicle suitable for the percutaneous absorption of apomorphine. The solvents used were propylene glycol (PG), $Transcutol^{\circledR},\;Labrasol^{\circledR},\;Labrafac hydro WL^{\circledR},\;Labrafil WL 2609 BS^{\circledR}$ and isopropyl alcohol. Even though permeation rates of apomorphine from each vehicle were low $(0.008-0.36\;{\mu}g/cm^2/hr)$, the combination of PG and $Labrafac^{\circledR}$ increased it significantly. The permeation rates of apomorphine from $PG/Labrafac^{\circledR}$ mixtures increased as the volume fraction of PG in the mixture increased. The maximum permeation rate of $18\;{\mu}g/cm^2/hr$ was achieved at 30% of PG, which decreased with further increase of PG fraction. A series of fatty acids, alcohols and monoterpenes were employed as penetration enhancers. Incorporation of each enhancer in the $PG/Labrafac^{\circledR}$ (30:70) mixture at the level of 10% improved the skin permeation significantly. The highest permeation rate, $117\;{\mu}g/cm^2/hr$, was attained with myristic acid.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of stabilization of retinyl palmitate (RP) on its skin permeation and distribution profiles. Skin permeation and distribution study were performed using Franz diffusion cells along with rat dorsal skin, and the effect of drug concentration and the addition of pectin on skin deposition profiles of RP was observed. The skin distribution of RP increased in a concentration dependent manner and the formulations containing 0.5 and 1 mg of pectin demonstrated significantly increased RP distributions in the epidermis. Furthermore, it was found that skin distribution of RP could be further improved by combined use of pectin and ascorbyl palmitate (AP), due largely to their anti-oxidative effect. These results clearly demonstrate that the skin deposition properties of RP can be improved by stabilizing RP with pectin. Therefore, it is strongly suggested that pectin could be used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations as an efficient stabilizing agent and as skin penetration modulator.
Wood vinegar is well known as a softening agent affecting on the stratum corneum that is easy to penetrate into the skin. In this study, we prepared mixed ursolic acid hydrogel with wood vinegar(1, 2, 5%) as a penetration enhancer. The accumulation of ursolic acid in the skin from hydrogels was evaluated in vitro hairless mouse skin and skin moisturizing effect of them was evaluated using the corneometer and the tewermeter. And the role of stratum corneum as a protective barrier was evaluated as well. The hydrogels were retained about 40% of water retention capacity 2hrs and had better effect on the stripped skin than full-thickness skin. The accumulation of ursolic acid through stripped skin from hydrogels with wood vinegar was not change compared to normal skin, which indicated the action site of wood vinegar and the accumulation site of ursolic acid would be stratum corneum. From these result, we could find wood vinegar seems to be a good enhancer for active materials with anti-wrinkle and anti aging effect such as ursolic acid, and can be a developed topical delivery system maintaining excellent water retention capacity.
To study the carrying capacity behavior of pile, dynamic pile testis and static load tests were carried out on two instrumented piles during and some time after pile driving. Cone Penetration Test( CPT) and Standard Penetration Test(SPT) were also performed at the test site before pile tests to investigate the relationship between unit skin friction of piles and cone tip resistance values and SPT N values. Total static capacity of pile reached the ultimate stage at the pile head settlement of about 0.055D (D : Pile diameter), at which skin friction of Pile already Passed the maximum value, but the end bearing was still increasing with the pile head settlement. The carrying capacity of pile increased in the form of natural logarithmic function with the time after pile driving. The increase in skin friction with time was very substantial the increase in skin friction 40 days after pile driving was 4.6 times of that determined during pile driving. The contribution of skin friction to the total capacity twas insignificant in the beginning, but became substantial 40 days after pile driving. This implies that the tested pile initially responded as an end bearing pile and later behaved as a friction pile. It was also noted that unit skin friction of pile might be ielated to cone tip resistance values(q.) and SPT N values, though the coefficient of this relationship might differ from one soil group to another and was somewhat greater than the value used in the design practice of Korea.

The formidable barrier property of the stratum cornemum and the high hydrophilicity of active ingredient make it difficult to permeate through the skin and reach to its site of action. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of chemical penetration enhancers on the skin permeation of a hydrophilic cosmetic active ingredient, such as arbutin. The enhancing effects of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) on the permeation of a hydrophilic cosmetic active ingredient were evaluated by using Franz diffusion cell. The study indicated that NMP has considerable influence on the skin permeability. NMP was not only the most effective enhancer but also increased the skin permeability of arbutin approximately 1.3~1.5 fold compared with control without penetration enhancer. The lag time did not change with NMP, which suggested no effect of NMP on skin lipid fluidity. This suggest that arbutin co-permeated with NMP. The results indicate NMP is effective enhancer of a hydrophilic cosmetic active ingredient in penetration, with potential applications for drug delivery system.
Based on pile load test results for various pile types that were constructed in-situ and pile design data of prebored PHC piles, the ratio of skin friction to total capacity (SRF) was analyzed. A SRF distribution range from the pile load test results for pilot test prebored PHC piles was 42~99% regardless of relative penetration lengths, soil types, and pile load test types. However, a SRF distribution range from the pile design data for prebored PHC piles was 20~53% regardless of relative penetration lengths and pile diameters. Also, a SRF distribution range from the restrike dynamic pile load test results for pretest working prebored PHC piles was a scattered range of 4~83% regardless of pile diameters, relative penetration lengths and soil types. The scattered SRF of pretest working piles was caused to the quality control issue on the filling of cement milk around piles and this quality control issue should be improved. The average SRF calculated by the current design method was estimated to be 2.2 times lower than the average SRF of the pilot test piles. It is because skin friction resistance is calculated at a very low level. Therefore, a new design method for skin friction will be proposed based on this study.

Scars can cause great psychological stress among patients. Currently, there are numerous topical agents, laser and surgical treatments available for skin rejuvenation and scar minimization. Laser-assisted drug delivery (LADD) is a treatment method that increases drug delivery by stimulating the skin physically and chemically to enhance the penetration of topical agents. This is one of the areas of great interest in the treatment of various skin diseases in addition to its use for cosmetic purposes. In particular, LADD is relatively non-invasive and has advantages in terms of accessibility and stability. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a collagen stimulator known to gradually restore skin volume by inducing inflammation and fibroplasia. Herein, we report a case of treatment of an atrophic scar with fractional carbon dioxide laser-assisted PLLA delivery.

Penetration rate of large molecule through skin is very low due to the barrier effect of stratum corneum. Novel microneedle treatment device with roll was designed for transdermal delivery of large molecular drugs such as vaccine and protein drugs. The permeation rates of FITC labelled bovine serum albumin (FITC-BSA) as a model protein were determined using modified Franz diffusion cell and hairless mouse skin which were treated by hydrogel or solution containing FITC-BSA. Fluorescent spectrophotometer was used to analyze the concentration of FITC-BSA. Microscope using fluorescent filter was used to capture the image and location of FITC-BSA in the skin. We confirmed that permeation rate of BSA was increased with the treatment by microneedle and was increased by the increasing frequency of treatment. Furthermore, the permeation rate observed from hydrogel treated skin was significantly higher than that from solution treated skin.

Transdermal drug delivery(TDS) offers many important advantages. For instance, it is easy and painless, it protects the active compound from gastric enzymes, and it avoids the hepatic first-pass effect. Also, it is simple to terminate the therapy if any adverse or undesired effect occurs. But skin is a natural barrier, and only a few drugs can penetrate the skin easily and in sufficient quantities to be effective. Therefore, in recent years, numerous studies have been conducted in the area of penetration enhancement. The most commonly used transdermal system is the skin patch using various types of technologies. Compared with other method of dosage, it is possible to use for a long term. It is also possible to stop the drug dosage are stopped if the drug dosage lead to side effect. Polysaccharide, such as xanthan gum and algin were selected as base materials of TDS. Also, these polymers were characterized in terms of enhancers and drug contents. Among these polysaccharide, the permeation rate of Paroxetine such as lipophilic drug was the fastest in xanthan gum matrix in vitro. We used glycerin, PEG400 and PEG800 as enhancers. Since dermis has more water content(hydration) than the stratum corneum, skin permeation rate at steady state was highly influenced when PEG400 was more effective for lipophilic drug. Proper selection of the polymeric materials which resemble and enhance properties of the delivering drug was found to be important in controlling the skin permeation rate.
