  • We propose a method for sample size determination using design effect formulas when a sample is resigned for a repeated survey. The proposed method enables the determination of the sample size by incorporating the impact of various design components to the sampling error through design effect formulas that are applicable under multistage sampling design and stratified multistage sampling designs.

  • Sungnam city, as a major satellite town, is located in the southeast of Seoul. Atmospheric conditions are so stable that air pollutants from various emissions are tend to resist change because Sungnam city is located in the Namhansansung valley. The industrial distribution of Sungnam city are composed of various manufactories such as foods, fibers, chemicals, machinery and electronics etc. The heavy metal concentrations and size distribution are the most important parameters influencing among the way in which respirable suspended particulate matter interact with the human respiratory system. Respirable suspended particulate matter was collected on glass fiber filters from April 1993 to February 1994 according to particle size using Anderson sampler during 10 days per month at Sungnam city. 6 heavy metals, Fe, Zn, Pb Mn, Cu and Cd, were analyzed by particle size with atomic absorption spectrophotometry . The results could be summarized as follows: 1. The annual arithmetic mean concentration of total suspended particulate was 116.3$\mu $g/m$^{3}$ m', seasonal variation was the highest in spring season(196.5$\mu $g/m$^{3}$) and the lowest in Summer Season(72.9$\mu $g/m$^{3}$). 2. The ratio of airborne particulate concentrations respirable to nonrepairable( Res/Non- Res) of annual arithmetic mean value was 5.8'1, seasonal variation was highest in the spring season(6.3 : 1) and lowest in the summer season(4.6 : 1). 3. During the spring season the shape of the size distribution was trimodal which showed peaks at 3 size groups, which were below of 0.43$\mu $m, 3.3∼4.7$\mu $m and above of 11.0$\mu $g/m$^{3}$ respectively. 4. Respirable suspended particulate matter concentrations of Zn, Pb Cu and Cd were the highest in below of 0.43$\mu $m as follows; 0.517$\mu $g/m$^{3}$, 0.411 $\mu $g/m$^{3}$, 0.062$\mu $g/m$^{3}$ and 0.0310$\mu $g/m$^{3}$ , respectively, Fe and Mn were the highest in the particle size range of 4.7 ∼ 7.0$\mu $m as follows; 2.504$\mu $g/m$^{3}$ and 0.095$\mu $g/m$^{3}$, respectively. 5. The Pt Cd, Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn concentrations of annual arithmetic mean value respirable to non- respirable( Res/Non- Res ) were 33.65, 19.27, 17.74, 10.54, 3.20 and 5.20, respectively.

  • The min aim of thls study was to evaluate the effect of particle slze of the fly ash as a cement additive. Experimental work was carried out with three different sizes of fly ash. 18.58, 8.95 and 4.02{$mu}m$ in average radius. Namely, the effect of particle size variation of fly ash on the physical properties of cement paste was investigated. The jluidity was decreased with increasing the addition of fly ash to cement paste regardless of the particle size variation. The decrement of the fluidity of the pulverized fly ash was higher than that of the spherical fly ash. On the other hand, the pozzolan reactivity increased with lowering particle size. In the case of specimens with 5% up to 10% addition of fly ash having a particle size of 4.02{$mu}m$. the compressive strength was increased as compared with the plain specimens before curing for 28 days and showed higher value above 800kg /$cm^2$ when cured for 60 days. This increased compressive strength was ascribed to both the closer packlng of fine particles and the pozzolan reactivity of fly ash. These results were comfirmed by measuring both the porosity of the specimens and Ca(OH ), contents remained in specimens. This work showed that could be effectively ut~lized as a blending material without any de crease in the strength of early hydration stage if we can control the particle size of fly ashes by sizing or pulverizing.

  • Although there are many studies of the effect of climate change on the breeding phenology and community diversity of amphibians, the studies of variations in reproductive population size of individual species according to climate change are still lacking. We examined the effect of climate change on the reproductive population size of Rana huanrenensis and Hynobius leechii, which bred in mountain valleys, by surveying the reproductive population of the two species between 2005 and 2012 and analyzing the correlation between the variation of the outdoor population and the surrounding climate change factors, obtained from a meteorological observatory located at 5.6 km from the study site. The size of the reproductive population of the two species commonly fluctuated with aan pproximately 3.5-year cycle. That of H. leechii, in particular, decreased significantly over eight years. The air temperature tended to more closely relate with the reproductive population size of R. huanrenensis as was the case of the precipitation with that of H. leechii. The yearly mean highest temperature and spring mean temperature variation consistently decreased over the eight years, and the latter was related with the significantly decreased size of H. leechii reproductive population. These results showed that recent climate change directly could affect the reproductive population size of amphibians, particularly H. leechii, which breeds in mountain valleys.

  • Receptor-mediated endocytosis has been suggested for a stage-specific transport mechanism of vitellogenin into the oocytes of a sabellid poly chaete, Pseudopotamilla occelata. Membrane proteins of oocytes of three size classes, including small (30-70 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter), intermediate (70-140 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter) and large (180-200 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter), showed a atage-specific variation. Coelomic fluid proteins (CP), ass$\mu\textrm{m}$ed to be vitellogenin, consists of several proteins, which showed quite a different pattern from that of yolk proteins. Incorporation of $^{125}I$-CP into the oocytes of the intermediate size class almost linearly increases with time, showing a contrast to the pattern of the large size class, in which the incorporation is low and approaches a plateau, suggesting the vitellogenin transports by a regulated process only in the intermediate size class. Vitellogenin receptor proteins were identified to be 60 kDa and 68 kDa only in the intermediate size class by a ligand blotting test.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of dot pattern size(0.8, 1.8, 2.5, 5, 8), color combination (BG/R, Y/B), value tone(lt/dk, p/g), area-ratio on image information. Sets of stimulus and response scales(7 point semantic) were used as experimental materials. The stimuli were 20 color pictures manipulated with the combination of dot pattern size, color combination, value tone and area-ratio using computer simulation. The subjects were 240 female undergraduates living in Gyeongsangnam-do. Image factor of the stimulus was composed of 4 different components, visibility, chastity.feminity, cuteness and attractiveness. In the visibility, color combination, value tone, area-ratio, dot pattern size showed independent effect. In the chastity feminity, color combination, value tone, showed independent effect. In the cuteness, value tone, area-ratio, dot pattern size showed independent effect. Significant interaction effects of color and area-ratio combination on visibility and cuteness were found. Interaction efforts of color and value tone combination, value tone and area-ratio was significant on cuteness. For visibility image, BG/R combination of color and yellow background/blue dots were effective. For cuteness image, pale/grayish tone and background/dots area-ratio were effective.

  • The multifamily housing has various advantages in construction cost, land-use intensity. KRIHS(1997) recommended the proper scale of th multifamily housing as 800 households in constructability, 1,000 households in facility compactability, 500 households in social aspect. At the early planning stage of project, the size of the multiftmily housing has, until now, been maximizingly considered under the regulation on which has been emphasized at the building volume ratio, land area, etc., except for the expenditure during the maintenance stage. This paper aimed at providing the proper size of multifamily housing in aspect of area and household number with maintenance cost at the early stage of project. For these, it took 곧 average cost function which is made from the 3-rd quardratic form and analyzes the unit increasing rate of the average cost. It surveyed in nationwide focused on the central heating system using diesel and kerosene. The number of samples is 88 and items of management cost is 11. The results are as follows ; first, 3rd-order quadratic function is proper at explaining the cost variation, considering the multicollinearity and statistics. Second, the proper size of multifamily housing is recommended with 83,000 $m^2$ on management area, 820 or over the 2,630 household number in aspect of total management cost.

  • We studied variation in clutch size, hatching, fledging and breeding success of the Black-tailed Gull (larus crassirostris) at Hongdo Island, which supported the largest breeding colony of the species, in South Korea in 1997 and 2000 to 2003. Cluck size was recorded in 1,388 nests and breeding success was estimated in 83 nests. Mean clutch size was 1.89 t 0.65. A total of 63.9% of the eggs hatched and 53.5% of the chicks survived until fledged. Breeding success was 34.2%. Causes of breeding failure were eggs missing (14.9%), rotten eggs (15.5%) and predation (2.4%) during the incubation period and chicks missing(35.8%), starvation (7.4%) and pecked chicks (3.2%) during the chick rearing period. In 2002, the main causes of breeding failure were eggs missing (17.2%) and rotten eggs (6.9%) during the incubation period and missing chicks (15.5%), starvation (3.5%) and pecked chicks (6.9%) during the chick rearing period. Most chick mortality occurred within three days after hatching.

  • A study has been investigated on the effect of mechanical properties (tension strength, rotary bending fatigue strength, wear resistance, hardness) according to the carbide particle size variation by the treatment of 1) quenching tempering, and 2) quenching, subzero treatment and tempering. The material used in this investigation was a typical bearing steel, high C high Cr, AISI E 52100. The result obtained in this study were as follows : (1) Finer the carbide particle size increasing the hardness and retained austenite in same quenching condition. (2) Finer the carbide particle size reduced the tension and rotary bending fatigue which were resulted from austenite grain growth and carbide precipitation on grain boundry that induced by carbide refine heat treatment. (3) Finer the carbide particel size increasing the wear resistance which were resulted by uniform distribution of carbide and increased hardness induced by microstructural uniform hardenability of matrix. (4) When the carbide particles were refinded, subzero treatment is effective only wear resistance and hardness.

  • The characteristics of one year observation aerosol data in Seoul, 200 I was studied using an OPC (Optical Particle Counter). The size resolved aerosol number concentrations of 0.3 ∼ 25 11m were measured. The results were compared with PM$_{10}$ mass concentration data under various meteorological conditions including dust and precipitation events. For fine particles whose diameter is less than 2.23 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, the number concentration increases in the early morning which is considered due to transportation. while the coarse mode particles increase during daytime. This increase can be explained as local sources and human activities near sampling site. Hourly averaged data show that there exists diurnal variation. Generally, PM$_{10}$ data showed a similar tendency with OPC data. The size resolved OPC data showed that the particles of 0.5 ∼ 3.67 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ are positively correlated with PM$_{10}$ data. The accumulated volume fraction of size resolved aerosol concentration in 0.5 ∼ 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ showed that 0.5 ∼ 2.23 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ particles occupied 59.2% of total aerosol volume of 0.5 ∼ 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$./TEX>.
