I examined the relationship between allocations to plant size components such as plant height, total leaf weight, and nuber of branches and to reproductive components such as the number and weight of male and female fowers in three populations of the monoecious, wind-pollinated Ambrosia artemisiifolia. In particular, the two types of gender of plants, phenotypic and functional gender, were related to resource allocation. Mean values of all plant size and reproductive components differed significantly among the three populations. Such inter-population differences did not exist for both photosynthetic and reproductive efforts, Plant size components were mostly positively correlated with reproductive components among plants. However, the relationships between photosynthetic effort and reproductive components were largely negative and inconsistent among populations. The phenotypic gender was much lover than 0.5 in all of the three populations. Pairwise correlations between functional gender and each allocation measurement such as plant size components, reproductive components, photosynthetic effort, and reproductive effort were not consistent across the three populations. These results suggest that the gender of A. artemisiifolia measured as flower production responds sensitively to environmental conditions which might differ whithin as well as among populations.

Effects of particulate size and frictional characteristics were examined on the melting behavior of PP(polypropylene) in a twin screw extruder. Powder and pellet types of PP were used and each component was blended with PE(polyethylene) wax and clay, respectively. It was observed that small size particulates, 1.e. powder systems exhibit accelerated melting behavior; and it was also found that the abrasive auditive acts as an effective agent for fast melting of PP powder. Retardation of melting due to the reduced friction was observed in both types of PP, contrary to the result found in a batch mixer. The tendency observed in variation of torque and exit temperature was explained in terms of frictional effect and length of compacted region formed during evolution of melting.
Light scattering coefficient of visible light by atmospheric aerosol over the size range 0.01-10$\mu$m is determined from scattering efficiency and aerosol size distribution. Aerosol number distribution as a function of particle diameter dN/dlog D decreases rapidly as increasing particle size. Distribution of scattering coefficient d$\sigma_s/dlog$ D is mostly accumulated in diameter 0.1-2.0 $\mu$m showing its maximum in the vicinity of 0.6$\mu$m. This means that the visible light in the atmosphere is mainly scattered by these particles. Diurnal variation of scattering coefficient $\sigma_s$ appears its maximum in the morning, while minimum in the afternoon which agrees with the aerosol number distribution in the size range 0.1-2.0 $\mu$m.
The growth process of solid grains in a liquid matrix is usually explained in tem1S of Ostwald ripening. The variation of growth (dissolution) rate as a function of grain size during Ostwald ripening predicted that the dissolution rate becomes very large as grain size decreases but the growth rate of a large grain is rather limited. Therefore. a rather uniform size distribution of grain size is maintained once after the quasi-equilibrium state is reached. Quite frequently, however, the exaggerated grain growth (EGG) is observed to occur: only a limited number of grains grow exceptionally. From the observation that the EGG occurs only for the faceted grains with apparently straight solid-liquid interfaces, the EGG is suggested to be the consequence of growth process controlled by 2-dimensional nucleation. In this study, the result by computer calculation on the grain growth process controlled by various mechanisms will be given.

Mangrove crowns were delineated using active sensor LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) data by a crown delineating model developed in this study. LIDAR data were acquired from airborne survey by a helicopter for the estuary of Macouria in the northeast coast of French Guiana. The canopy height image was derived from LIDAR vector data by calculating the difference between ground and non-ground data. The mangrove site in the study area was classified to three sectors by the time of mangrove settlement; Mangrove 1986, 2002 and 2003. The estimated crown of Mangrove 1986 was reliable defined for their size, number and volume because of larger crown size and bigger variation of crown height. The tree crown size of Mangrove 2002 and 2003 by the model was overestimated and the number of trees was much underestimated. The estimated crown was not for single crown but a crown group due to homogenous crown height and spatial resolution of LIDAR data. However the canopy height image derived from LIDAR data provided three-dimensional information of mangroves.
We had investigated combustion properties of rice bran dusts. Decomposition of rice bran dusts with temperature were investigated using DSC and the weight loss according to temperature using TGA in order to find the thermal hazard of rice bran dusts, and the properties of dust explosion in variation of their dust with the same particle size. Using Hartman's dust explosion apparatus which estimate dust explosion by electric ignition after making dust disperse by compressed air, dust explosion experiments have been conducted by varying concentration and size of rice bran dust.According to the results for thermodynamic stability of rice bran dust, there are little change of initiation temperature of heat generation and heating value for used particle size. But initiation temperature of heat generation decreased with high heating rate whereas decomposition heat increased with particle size. Average maximum explosion pressure was $10kgf/cm^2$ for 60/70 mesh and $1.5mg/cm^2$ dust concentration.
Electrical properties of ZnO ceramics based on Bi oxide was investigated in relation to sintering temperature. In the temperature range >$1150^{\circ}C$ to >$1350^{\circ}C$ the grain size increased from 9.mu.m to 20.mu.m when the sintering temperature was raised. The leakage current in the low voltage range increased as the potential barrier decreases, which is caused by increasing the grain size at high temperature. The dielectric characteristics of the ZnO ceramics was also affected by sintering temperature. Large dielectric constant was attributed, to the grainboundary layer of polycrystalline ZnO ceramics and decreasing grainboundary width. The variation of breakdown voltage with sintering temperature was attributed to the change of the donor concentration in the ZnO grain and grain size. The results showed that breakdown voltage increased decreasing grain size and donor concentration. Nonohmic coefficient was associated with the lower breakdown voltage per grainboundary layer due to the grain growth and higher donor concentration.
Piezoelectric BaTiO$_3$-polymer composite were investigated for dielectric and piezoelectric properties with the barium titanate active particle size. Under the condition of the same density and ceramic volume ratio of composite, the dielectric and piezoelectric constant of composite are increasing as the ceramic particle size in composite are increasing. The surface layer model was quoted to explain these phenomena in our system and experimentally confirmed. The connectivity parameter of modified cube model of composite was calculated from the dielectric constant variation as their particle size. The connectivity parameter X and Y were 77.8% and 98.9% respectively. It means that the barium titanate particle distribution in composite nearly approach to the parallel mode. It was experimentally confirmed that the surface layer has low dielectric and nonferroelectric properties. Dielectric constant and thickness of surface layer were calculated from the equivalent circuit of composite.
Methanol oxidation effect on carbon supported Pt was investigated as a function of Pt content in a sample which is closely correlated with Pt particle sizes. After prolonged methanol oxidation the Pt particle size did not change within the experimental error ranges. The $^{13}C$ chemical shift and linewidth of CO adsorbed on Pt show non-linear behavior simply due to the Pt particle size difference. The Pt size variation difference between this work and the previous reports of the particle growths is explained by the experimental temperature difference.
Atmospheric particulate matters (A. P. M. ) were collected on quartz-fiber filters from March 1985 to May 1986, using the Andersen high-volume air sampler and contents of six heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb Ni) in the A. P. M. were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. These heavy metals were divided into the three groups with respect to their particle size distribution. Fe and Mn were mainly associated with coarse particles (diameter > 2.0 $\mu$m), but Pb and Ni were related fine particles (diameter < 2.0 $\mu$m). Cu and Zn had mized size distributions in both of them. In the seasonal variation of heavy metals, the contents of Fe and Mn in spring and Ni and Pb in winter were higher than any other season. There were high mutual correlation between Fe and Mn coarse particles, and between Pb and Ni in fine particles.
