  • It is well known that pneumatic actuators convert fluid power into mechanical power with a low efficiency. The pneumatic rotary actuators are used in not only marine winches. but also hoists, agitators, and excavators. The efficiency of pneumatic rotary actuators depends on several factors, such as type of actuator. speed, supply pressure. size and geometry of the actuator. This paper presents an analytical and experimental study of the performance of pneumatic rotary actuators. We investigate all the major aspects of the air flow through a pneumatic rotary actuator and points out the main causes of the low efficiency of the actuator. Therefore the design parameters which can lead to optimum performance are obtained.

  • This paper addresses characteristics of compressible flow dynamics inside a pipe with an accumulator and an inlet orifice. It also presents a simple but stable numerical method associated with the accumulator-orifice calculation. In particular, a focus is given to developing a method of finding an optimum design of the accumulator-orifice system (i.e., the accumulator size and the throttle resistance) that gives the most effective dissipation of the water-hammering problem. It is found that there exists indeed an optimum set of parameter values for the most effective dissipation of the wave energy.

  • The steel door inner was manufactured via a new route, tailored blanking process, to remove hinge reinforcement parts, using thicker panels laser welded, instead. It is very important, first of all, in this process, to design optimum configuration of tailored blanks and determine the optimum process control for the stamping. Generally, it was found that the severe deformation reduction behavior during stamping in the thinner panel around weld line caused cracks and the other troubles in formability. It is our purpose of this investigation to introduce how the process control parameters, such as tailored blank configuration, size, location in the die, the position of weld line, BHF, bead configuration, work on the formability. In addition, causes of cracks and movement of weld line after forming were analyzed and compared with computer simulation work.

  • A Design & Simulation Tools of Surface Acoustic Wave(SAW) Filters for Mobile Communication Systems, which is based on Optimization of Impulse Samples with Object Function of Amplitude, Ripple and Group Delay Characteristics, is developed and is also evaluated by designning and simulating the SAW IF Filter for PCS. In Optimization Process, fast calculation algorithm of Object Function is proposed. With this Design Tools, Transversal SAW IF Filters can be easily designed under limited conditions of small chip size and package size. It may be also applicable to wide Band Pass Filters in future Communication Systems such as FPLMTS.

  • This paper presents a typical solar domestic hot water system and estimates their performances with variance of collector size, storage volume, collector tilt and other factors. The analysis is performed by th computer simulation for which conceptual system against 8760 hourly solar intensities and ambient temperature for a model year stored in the computer has been running. System performance is analyzed on hourly, monthly and yearly basis respectively and at the same time, the economics of various systems are evaluated. And also, this paper shows how an optimized design can be selected for any locality for which solar data and collector performance are provided. The results of this study are as follows. (1)Storage volume of 45 liter per square meter of solar collector lead to the best design. (2)Tilting the collectors to the same angle of the latitude is generally the best (3)Optimal size of collector is approximately 6.68-8.35m$^{2}$ when the latitude is 37.6 .deg. N and storage volume is 300 liter. (4)The performances of a solar domestic hot water system does not depend on the hourly usage but the daily usage.

  • Among the ULSAB methods for the lightweight automobile body, Tailor Welded Blank(TWB) is adopted and the design process is developed for the existing component. Topology optimization conducted to find the distribution of the variable thickness. The number of parts and the welding lines are determined from it. In the detail design, size optimization is carried out to find the optimum thickness of each part and then, the final parting lines are tuned by shape optimization. A commercial optimization software GENESIS is utilized for the optimization processes.

  • Surface of fine-size exposed aggregate Portland cement concrete pavements is consists of exposed coarse aggregate by removing upper 2~3mm mortar of concrete slab. Fine-size exposed aggregate PCC pavements have advantages of maintaining low-noise and adequate skid-resistance level during the performance period. In order to provide the successful exposed concrete aggregate pavement, uniform distribution of the coarse aggregate on pavement surface through adequate the mix design and exposing method. In this study, evaluated initial performance of fine-size exposed aggregate PCC pavement by experimental construction. And it was known that fine-size exposed aggregate concrete pavement which can reduce the noise and maintain the adequate level of skid resistance and strength.

  • It is essential to know the flow characteristics at the risers of Flat-plate solar collector for optimum design. For flat-plate solar collector, it is difficult to experimentally study the effect for the number of riser in the collector for the economic problem. So, this study was performed to show the flow characteristics of flat-plate solar collector with the number of riser using commercial code FLUENT 6.0. The base collector size is chosen with $2\;m^2$ as 1m by 2m in this study, the mass flow rate was estimated 0.04 kg/s using the mass flow rate of 0.02 kg/s per collector area for the certificate test. The number of riser is selected 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14. Through the simulation, the conditions with the risers of 10 or 12 is shown as the optimum design conditions for conventional flat-plate solar collector considering lower pressure drop and more uniformly distributed mass flow rate for higher heat transfer rate without considering heat transfer.

  • The present research is based upon the numerical analysis of a car windshield in order to represent the optimum design guide to improve the overall defrosting performance of the system. First, the control factors that highly affect the defrosting performance of a car windshield are chosen and afterwards, the optimum variables of each control factor are extracted out to analyze its performance. The main control factors for this research are respectively, the air injection angle of a defroster nozzle, the height of a nozzle outlet, and the ratio of the width to the height of a nozzle outlet. For such case when the air inlet angle is relatively small, the flow near the vicinity of the inner face of a windshield tends to expand. As a consequence, the heat transfer rate through the windshield decreases. Also, the height of a nozzle outlet is recommended to maintain its size to minimum. However, when the ratio mentioned before is designed less than unity, the defrosting performance decreases.

  • In this study, an experiment was performed to obtain the optimum design of a passive micromixer for effective mixing by using a microsized device and rectangular obstacles; a low Reynolds number was maintained in the microchannel. The experiment was carried out by varying the number, size, and location of the rectangular obstacles. Further, the Y-channel's shape was optimized for maximizing the mixture ratio, which has limit qualification that an allowed value of pressure drop. The increase in the efficiency of mixing was observed to be greater than that in the case of circular obstacles by approximately 2.5%.
