Size reduction is one of the major pre-processing operations in using biomass as a source of energy or raw materials for forest products industry. The grinding characteristics of dried yellow poplar wood chips were investigated using laboratory knife mill with three different screen aperture diameters to provide the basic information for the optimizing of size reduction processes in biomass industry. Average specific energy consumptions were 0.157, 0.137, and 0.093 Wh/g for the screen aperture diameters of 5.0, 7.5, and 9.0 mm, respectively. According to the results of size distribution analysis of ground particles, the sizes of the most of ground particles were much smaller than the aperture diameters of the screens installed on knife mill used in this study.
Carbon-supported Platinum (Pt) is the potential electro-catalyst material for anodic and cathodic reactions in fuel cell. Catalytic activity of the metal strongly depends on the particle shape, size and distribution of the metal in the porous supportive network. Conventional preparation techniques based on wet impregnation and chemical reduction of the metal precursors often do not provide adequate control of particle size and shape. We have proposed a novel route for preparing nano sized Pt colloidal particles in solution by oxidation of ethylene glycol. These Pt nano particles were deposited on large surface area carbon support. The process of nano Pt colloid formation involves the oxidation of solvent ethylene glycol to mainly glycolic acid and the presence of its anion glycolate depends on the solution pH. In the process of colloidal Pt formation glycolate actsas stabilizer for the Pt colloidal particle and prevents the agglomeration of colloidal Pt particles. These mono disperse Pt particles in carbon support are found uniformly distributed in nearly spherical shape and the size distribution was narrow for both supported and unsupported metals. The average diameter of the Pt nano particle was controlled in the range off to 3 nm by optimizing reaction parameters. Transmission electron microscopy, CV and RRDE experiments were used to compliment the results.
Spray pyrolysis has been found as an excellent method for the preparation of mesoporous barium sulfate at higher temperature. Ethylene glycol, a reducing agent, and solvents had good inhibition effect for the preparation of $BaSO_4$ nano particles. The $BaSO_4$ solution was sprayed at 500 & 800 ${^{\circ}C}$ using different solvents such as methanol, ethanol, propanol and n-butyl alcohol. $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherm revealed that $BaSO_4$ is micropore free, possessing narrow mesopores size distribution and high BET surface areas of 72.52 $m^2\;g^{-1}$ at 800 ${^{\circ}C}$ using propanol as an additive. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicates that the morphology of $BaSO_4$ nano material shows uniform shell like particles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) proved that the resulting BaSO4 nano particles were uniform in size and the average particle size was 4-8 nm. The surface functionality and ethylene glycol peaks were assessed by Fourier transform infrared resonance (FTIR) spectroscopy. Low intensity ethylene glycol specific absorption peak was observed in propanol which proved that propanol had good inhibition effect on the structural morphology of nano particles.

Objectives: This study aimed to characterize the nanoparticles produced by welding and grinding processes. Methods: The number concentrations of particles were mapped to determine the distribution of welding fumes in a workplace atmosphere using a hand-held condensation particle counter. An electrical low-pressure impactor was used for measuring the number concentration and particle size distribution. Results: High number concentrations were found around arc cutting and welding (grinding) processes. In the worker's breathing zone, the mean number concentration was 655,000 particles/cm3 and the count median diameter (CMD) was 84 nm with several multi peak distributions (~20, 70, 300 nm). However, at a distance of 3 m from the welding position, the number concentration decreased to 153,000 particles/cm3 with a 70 nm single peak size distribution. During a grinding process, peaks with high concentrations of nanoparticles were temporarily observed. The mean number concentration was 1,520,000 particles/cm3, and the CMD was 30 nm. Nanoparticles (<100 nm) made up 58% and 92% of the aerosols produced by welding and grinding processes, respectively.

An innovative spiral variable-section capillary model is established for piping critical hydraulic gradient of cohesion-less soils causing water/mud inrush in tunnels. The relationship between the actual winding seepage channel and grain-size distribution, porosity, and permeability is established in the model. Soils are classified into coarse particles and fine particles according to the grain-size distribution. The piping critical hydraulic gradient is obtained by analyzing starting modes of fine particles and solving corresponding moment equilibrium equations. Gravities, drag forces, uplift forces and frictions are analyzed in moment equilibrium equations. The influence of drag force and uplift force on incipient motion is generally expounded based on the mechanical analysis. Two cases are studied with the innovative capillary model. The critical hydraulic gradient of each kind of sandy gravels with a bimodal grain-size-distribution is obtained in case one, and results have a good agreement with previous experimental observations. The relationships between the content of fine particles and the critical hydraulic gradient of seepage failure are analyzed in case two, and the changing tendency of the critical hydraulic gradient is accordant with results of experiments.
We used the discrete-sectional model to analyze the particle growth by coagulation of particles in silane plasma reactor, considering the Gaussian distribution function for particle charges. The effects of process conditions such as monomer size and mass generation rate of monomers on particle growth in plasma reactor were analyzed theoretically/ Based on the Gaussian distribution function of particle charges, the large particles of more than 40 nm in size are almost found to be charged negatively, but some fractions of small, tiny particles are in neutral state or even charged positively. As the particle size and surface area increase with time by particle coagulation, the number of charges per particle increases with time. As the large particles are generated by particle coagulation, the particle size distribution become bimodal. The results of discrete-sectional model for the particle growth in silane plasma reactor were in close agreement with the experimental results by Shiratani et al. [3] for the same plasma conditions. We believe the model equations for the particle charge distribution and coagulation between particles can be applied to understand the nano-sized particle growth in plasma reactor.
Colloidal particles of silica (100 nm in size) were electrostatically dispersed and adsorbed on a glass substrate coated with silica sol or alumina sol. Stability of the suspensions and microstructure of the adsorbed particle layers were discussed in terms of total potential energies between the particles and the substrate. Well-dispersed suspension resulted in a layer with densely packed and regularly arranged particles, whereas less stable suspension resulted in a porous layer with loosely packed and irregularly arranged particles. Despite repulsive interactions between the particles and the substrate coated with silica sol, the observed adsorption can be attributed to chemical bonds formed at the interface between the particle and silica sol. In contrast, the adsorption of the particles on the substrate coated with alumina sol formed a layer with strongly adhered and densely packed particles, due to large attractive interactions between the particles and alumina sol.
Titanium dioxide particles with three different average sizes, prepared by three different methods, were incorporated into silica gel pores by impregnation. The titanium dioxide incorporated into the silica gel pores was photoionized by 240-400 nm irradiation at 77 K by a one-photon process to from trapped hole centers on OH group and trapped electron centers on titanium which were detected by electron paramagnetic resonance at 77 K. During the impregnation the smallest size range of TiO2 particles can be incorporated into silica gels with 2.5-1.5 nm pores. However, the largest size range of TiO2 particles can only be incorporated into silica gels with 6-15 nm pores and not into silica gels with 2.5-4 nm pores. The photoyield and stability of photoinduced hole and electron centers depends on the silica pore sizes of silica gels and surface area as well as on the TiO2 loading. In large pore silica gels and large particle size of TiO2, photoinduced charge separation reaches to a plateau at shorter irradiation times and the trapped hole and electron centers are more stable to decay.

Photoelectric charging is a very efficient way of charging small particles. This method can be applied to combustion measurement, electrostatic precipitator, metal separation and control of micro-contamination. To understand the photoelectric charging mechanism, particle charging of silver by exposure to ultraviolet is investigated in this study. Average charges and charge distributions are measured at various conditions, using two differential mobility analyzers, a condensation nucleus counter, and an aerosol electrometer. The silver particles are generated in a spark discharge aerosol generator. After that process, the generated particles are charged in the photoelectric charger using low-pressure mercury lamp that emits ultraviolet having wavelength 253.7 nm. The results show that ultra-fine particles are highly charged by the photoelectric charging. The average charges linearly increase with increasing particle size and the charge distribution change with particle size. These results are discussed by comparison with previous experiments and proposed equations. It is assumed that the coefficient of electron emission probability is affected by initial charge. The results also show that the charge distribution of a particle is dependent on initial charge. Single changed particle, uncharged particle and neutralized particle are compared. The differences of charge distribution in each case increase with increasing particle size.

The suspension polymerization of styrene was carried out to obtain the narrow-size distribution of particle by using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as suspension stabilizer according to the degree of hydrolysis and the molecular weight. The stabilizing properties of suspension are also dependent on the interfacial tension of aqueous solution when PVA is added. When the polymerization process was carried out with low hydrolyzed PVA, it gave single, well-defined particles, while high hydrolyzed PVA gave clusters. The size of particle produced in this study ranged between 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The suspending agent, PVA, influences on the drop size and drop stability, When the molecular weight of PVA is increased, the drop size decreases and the drops become more stable toward coalescence. An increase in the PVA concentration decreases the mean drop size and narrows the drop size distribution.
