  • Cell cracking method using a non-collision was evaluated for the possibility of new red ginseng grinding technique. Based on particle size distribution analysis by 1size shaker, the ratios of 100 mesh penetrated particles were 94.9% for hammer mill (group A) and 95.6% for cell crack (group B). The ratio of 120 mesh penetrated particle of group A was higher than that in group B. The particle size distributions for 100 mesh non-penetrated Powder between 2 groups were not significantly different, and particle size distribution analysis by laser scattering analyzer showed that the particle size ranges were 0.77~128.07 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for group A and 4.24~180.07 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for group B. The Particle size distribution in group A was more broad than that in group B. The mean particle size in group B was larger than that in group A, while the standard deviation of particle size distribution in group B was less than that in group A. Structural surface characteristics, in group A, particle size distribution was broad and the distribution curve was amorphous. The structure of individual particles was similar to unequal stone which was roughly grinded and had soft cotton-like surface. In the contrary, in group B, particle size distribution was relatively narrow and also individual size particles were ubiquitously distributed. The structure of individual particles was unequal cut stone shape.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate preschoolers' entry behaviors into a play group and the responses of the play group in relation to the structural characteristics of the group in a natural situation. The entry behaviors of 43 preschoolers and the responses of the play group were time-sampled. In addition the structural characteristics, including size and sex composition of the play group, and existence of a friend in the group, were checked. The following results were obtained. (1) The subjects used frequently participating behavior and wandering behavior among their entry behaviors. The wandering behavior increased and the participating behavior decreased as the size of the play group increased. Also, the subjects used wandering behaviors in the mixed group more than in the same-sex group or opposite-sex group. There was no difference in the entry behaviors according to the existence of a friend in the group. (2) The play group ignored 56% of the entry behaviors, and accepted 38% of them. The positive response of the group increased with decreasing size of the play group, whereas the entry bids were increasingly ignored as the size of the group increased. The mixed group ignored the entry bids more than the same-sex or opposite-sex group did. Also, in the presence of a friend in the group, the play group responded more positively than the group with no friend did.

  • Size distributions of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) and its water-soluble organic and inorganic components were measured between January and February 2021 at an urban site in Gwangju in order to identify the major factors that determine their size distributions. Their size distributions during the study period were mainly divided into two groups. In the first group, PM, NO3-, SO42-, NH4+ and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) exhibited bi-modal size distributions with a dominant condensation mode at a particle size of 0.32 ㎛. This group was dominated by local production of secondary water-soluble components under atmospheric stagnation and low relative humidity (RH) conditions, rather than long-range transportation of aerosol particles from China. On the other hand, in the second group, they showed tri-modal size distributions with a very pronounced droplet mode at a diameter of 1.0 ㎛. These size distributions were attributable to the local generation and accumulation of secondary aerosol particles under atmospheric conditions such as atmospheric stagnation and high RH, and an increase in the influx of atmospheric aerosol particles by long-distance transportation abroad. Contributions of droplet mode NO3-, SO42-, NH4+ and WSOC to fine particles in the second group were significantly higher than those in the first group period. However, their condensation mode contributions were about two-fold higher in the first group than in the second group. The significant difference in the size distribution of the accumulation mode of the WSOC and secondary ionic components between the two groups was due to the influx of aerosol particles with a long residence time by long-distance transport from China and local weather conditions (e.g., RH).

  • Liver size is an important component in the diagnosis and follow-up of diffuse liver disease when testing for liver disease using ultrasonography. However, difficulties lies in determining the presence of hepatomegaly and liver atrophy because the method used for measuring liver size differs from one examiner to another and there is no relevant standard based on body build. The present study aims to propose a more objective method for liver size measurement and a reference range based on body build. A total of 260 normal adults (130 males, 130 females) participated in the study. Ultrasonography was performed in all participants to measure the size of the right lobe, left lobe, quadrate lobe, and caudate lobe of liver. Based on Physique Index(PI), a value derived from multiplying weight(kg) by height($m^2$), size of physique was divided into three groups including Group I with PI<150, Group II with $150{\leq}PI{\leq}250$, and Group III with PI>250. Thus, mean liver size by PI and a reference range with 95% reliability were suggested. The superoinferior diameter of right lobe was $12.34{\pm}1.18cm$ in males and $11.07{\pm}0.93cm$ in females, and its reference range was 10.64~11.0cm for Group I, 11.78~12.12cm for Group II, and 13.02~13.84cm for Group III. The anteroposterior diameter(T) of left lobe was $5.93{\pm}1.09cm$ in males and $5.18{\pm}0.99cm$ in females, and its reference range was 4.77~5.17cm for Group I, 5.49~5.79cm for Group II, and 6.68~7.44cm for Group III. The transverse diameter was $3.51{\pm}0.60cm$ in male participants and $3.42{\pm}0.49cm$ in female participants and its reference range was 3.29~3.51cm for Group I, 3.36~3.55cm for Group II, and 3.52~4.0cm for Group III. The caudate lobe index was $11.65{\pm}2.88cm^2$ in males and $9.62{\pm}2.18cm^2$ in females and its reference range was $8.83{\sim}9.75cm^2$ for Group I, $10.62{\sim}11.47cm^2$ for Group II, and $11.89{\sim}14.26cm^2$ for Group III. As a basic measurement method of liver size, the present study suggests measuring the superoinferior diameter for right liver lobe, the anteroposterior diameter for left liver lobe, the transverse diameter for quadrate lobe, and the caudate lobe index for caudate lobe. It is expected that this method along with its relevant reference range can be used as useful indicators in determining hepatomegaly and liver atrophy upon the diagnosis and follow-up testing of diffuse liver disease.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of size grading on growth, feed efficiency and survival of juvenile olive flounder. Juvenile flounder were divided into four groups by initial average size; Small group $(1.3{\pm}0.23g)$, medium group $(3.1{\pm}0.45g)$, large group $(4.9{\pm}0.57g)$ and ungraded group $(3.3{\pm}1.66g)$. Triplicate groups of 100 fish were reared over 8 weeks. In final body weight distribution, frequency of the small size flounder (10 g) was markedly higher in the ungraded group than in the small group. Specific growth rate, feed efficiency and survival in the ungraded group were significantly lower (P<0.05) than those in the pooled data of the othor three graded groups, although feed intake in the ungraded group was significantly higher (P<0.05) than that of the pooled data of the other three graded groups. These results show that the small flounder gained significantly faster growth and higher survival in the absence of the large flounder. Therefore, size grading seems to be an important and necessary operation to improve the growth and survival of juvenile olive flounder (1-5 g).
