  • Taguchi developed and provided various independent methods for actual application in design of experiments. Taguchi method is described in philosophy, method and others related to quality management. This thesis is one of case studies for improving the bond strength of epoxy resin by Taguchi method which is applied as a optimum developing tool in six sigma management revolution in many companies.

Development of High-Density Information Storage Media by Employing the Six Sigma Methodology (식스 시그마 기법을 활용한 고밀도 정보저장 매체 개발)

  • Six sigma methodology is the management tools not only can cause productivity enhancement through the quality control and cost reduction of products and services but also can be applied to various activities of corporates such as research and development. Development of high-density information storage media and devices is indispensible to accomplish the information convergence era. In this paper, we report the case of applying six sigma methodology and tools to the development project of high-density information storage media. The standard DMAIC process was applied to the project and pursuing goals and tools and results in each stage were explained in detail. By adopting the methodology, we could establish fabrication methods of information storage media of recording density higher than $250Gb/in^2$ with high uniformity and reproducibility. The magnetic property and performance of fabricated media were confirmed through measurement of the magnetic hysteresis curve.

A Six Sigma Activity for Saving Electrical Energy in a University Campus (6시그마 경영혁신 기법을 활용한 대학 전기 에너지 절감 캠페인)

  • Due to increase in oil price unstableness and earth warming, energy saving has been one of the most important global issues. We report a 6 sigma project that was carried out to save electrical energy in a university campus. DMAIC, the five-phase process of 6 sigma, was applied for the energy saving campaign. This paper proposes a simple method to quantify the sigma level of the electrical energy saving status and various activities to change the consciousness of all the university members. Results were very satisfied. The 6 sigma project saved about 10% of the total electrical consumption. This is approximately 50 million won a year. The success of the 6 sigma project served as a momentum to promote "Green Scholarship" that has become the center of public interest. Also, we have valuable experiences in the 6 sigma training that shows the university campus can be successfully used as a good place for the actual 6 sigma training.

A Study on the Optimization of the Dimensional Deviation due to the Shortening of the Cycle Time for Rear Cover of Mobile Phone (휴대폰 후면 커버의 공정시간 단축에 따른 치수 편차의 최적화에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we investigated the optimization of process conditions by using the Six Sigma process, design of experiment (DOE) method and response surface method (RSM) to resolve dimensional deviation and appearance problems arising from the shortened process time of the mobile phone rear cover. The analysis of the trivial many was performed by 2-sample T-test and cooling time, and mold temperature and packing pressure were selected as the vital fews affecting the overall width of the product. The optimal conditions of the process were then studied using the DOE and the RSM. We analyzed the improvement effects by applying the selected optimal conditions to the production process and the results showed that the difference between the mean value and target value of the overall width stood at 0.01 mm, an improvement of 88.89% compared to current process that fell within the range of standard dimension. The short-term process capability stood at $4.77{\sigma}$, which implied an excellent technology level despite a decrease by $0.22{\sigma}$ compared to the current process. The difference in process capability decreased by $2.44{\sigma}$ to $0.41{\sigma}$, showing a significant improvement in management capability. Ultimately, the process time of the product was shortened from 18.3 seconds in the current process to 13.65 seconds, resulting in a 34.07% improvement in production yield.

A Study on the Performance Improvement for Magnetic Resonance Imaging Examination by Using the 6-Sigma Application (6-시그마 기법을 이용한 자기공명영상 검사 실적 개선에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of the study was to improve of performance for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examination in the department of radiology. It was performed DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control). In the stage of definition, The fifth kinds of CTQ (critical to quality) by the kindness, the waiting time, the examination explanation, the waiting time and the waiting environment were selected by voice of customer. In the stage of measurement, the performed examinations and the reservation waiting time were measured each 1.77 and 1.69 sigma. In the stage of analysis, the potential key causes were determined the limited working hours and the difference of examination time of various entries. In the stage of improvement, MRI were performed with the operating system of 24 hours examination and the optimization of the difference of examination time by among of 30 minutes, 40 minutes, 50 minutes. Finally, the number of examinations and reserved waiting days were measured by each 3.17 and 1.71 sigma in the control stage.

Improvement for Chromaticity Coordinate Quality of Automotive White LED Packages (차량용 백색 LED 패키지의 색 좌표 품질 개선)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to improve the chromaticity coordinate quality of white LED packages for automobiles that require high quality and reliability. Methods: The project follows the structured methodology of the Six Sigma DMAIC Roadmap, which consists of Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control phases. Results: A CTQ is determined based on COPQ analysis, and a process map and a XY matrix are utilized for selecting process input variables. Three vital Few Xs are identified through data analysis; amount to mix at one time, deviation by head pumps, and deviation by production magazines, and process improvements are performed for each of the three vital Few Xs. Conclusion: The improved process conditions for the three vital Few Xs are applied to the production line, and the results show that the percent defective of chromaticity coordinate has improved from 1.59% to 0.63% and a financial effect of about 50 million won per year is obtained.

  • As more individuals and organizations participate in the complex design process of manufacturing industry, collaborative product development and management of the global supply chain have become more popular. Although the product quality concerns once focused on the manufacturing process, they are now directed at earlier stages of the design cycle where the engineering product is created as a 3D CAD model. In this paper, we describe the current state of product data quality activities in the manufacturing industry and the yardstick to measure 3D CAD data quality. Moreover we introduce a quality assurance method through the result of statistical analysis of 3D CAD models and suggest a six sigma level of CAD data quality by analyzing 76 samples provided from three Korean automotive companies.
