  • This study aims to distinguish what can be used in consideration of the national situation with Korea for Chinese Scenic and Historic Interest Areas, and the results are as follows; First, the Chinese Scenic and Historic Interest Areas expanded to the existing scenic cruise culture, travel, and tourism culture in the process of the influx of Western culture in the modern and contemporary era, and became popular as a travel destination. Accordingly, the Chinese government developed the tourism industry around the scenic sites, and thanks to the development of transportation and communication, the Scenic and Historic Interest Areas has become an important national heritage. This influenced the establishment of the system related to Scenic and Historic Interest Areas, and today, it is operated around the Scenic and Historic Interest Areas ordinance. Second, the designation of the Scenic and Historic Interest Areas is divided into the size of the site according to the area, and the process of selecting the Scenic and Historic Interest Areas classification, rating evaluation, and comprehensive value evaluation according to evaluation indicators and rating standards is carried out. Accordingly, according to the results of the classification, it is subdivided from the national level to the Scenic and Historic Interest Areas at the local level. Third, the central government is in charge of managing and supervising Scenic and Historic Interest Areas across the country, and the local government's construction department is in charge of supervising Scenic and Historic Interest Areas in the region. The management organization of Scenic and Historic Interest Areas established by local governments above the county level has a system that actually protects, utilizes, and manages Scenic and Historic Interest Areas. In addition, 14 detailed indicators are used to monitor Scenic and Historic Interest Areas. Based on these results, considering the application of the domestic scenic site policy, the method of developing the policy that has established the system from the perspective of the utilization of the people is worth considering. On the other hand, the evaluation of the designation and management system through the setting of various indicators has limitations in that it is difficult to secure objectivity in impressing or evaluating the landscape. Therefore, rather than blindly introducing quantified evaluation, it seems that guidance and promotion on how to expand consensus on scenic values and enjoy heritage should be prioritized.

  • Choledochal cyst is rare in the western countries, but common in oriental countries. Complicatioins include ascending cholangitis, recurrent pancreatities, progressive biliary cirrhosis, portal hypertension, stone formation and later malignant transformation. Bile peritonitis secondary to rupture is one of the rarest complications, with an incidence of 1.8 % to 18 %. The anomalous arrangement of the pancreatobiliary ductal system with a long common channel may cause inflammation leading to perforation of the cyst. The authors found 4 cases (14.2 %) of bile peritonitis among 28 cases of choledochal cyst treated from Jan. 1983 to Jan. 1998. The patients ages ranged from 6 months to 3 years and three were female. The perforation sites were located on the common bile duct at its junction with the cystic duct in 2 cases, the distal cyst wall in 1 case and the left hepatic duct at its junction with cyst in 1 case. The types of choledochal cysts by Todani's classification were Type IVa in 3 cases and type I in 1 case. By the new Komi's classification utilizing operative cholangiogram there were 2 cases of Type Ia, 1 case of type IIb and 1 case of type III. One stage cyst excision and hepaticojejunostomy(Roux-en Y type) was done in 3 cases, and two staged operation in 1 case. All patients had an uneventful course postoperatively. The average day of discharge was 9.8th postoperatively. In conclusion, primary excision of the choledochal cyst and biliary reconstruction is a safe and effective treatment of ruptured choledochal cyst in infants.

  • Many studies have reported the frequency and distribution of haplogroups among various cattle breeds for verification of their origins and genetic diversity. In this study, 318 complete sequences of the mtDNA control region from four Korean cattle breeds were used for haplogroup classification. 71 polymorphic sites and 66 haplotypes were found in these sequences. Consistent with the genetic patterns in previous reports, four haplogroups (T1, T2, T3, and T4) were identified in Korean cattle breeds. In addition, T1a, T3a, and T3b sub-haplogroups were classified. In the phylogenetic tree, each haplogroup formed an independent cluster. The frequencies of T3, T4, T1 (containing T1a), and T2 were 66%, 16%, 10%, and 8%, respectively. Especially, the T1 haplogroup contained only one haplotype and a sample. All four haplogroups were found in Chikso, Jeju black and Hanwoo. However, only the T3 and T4 haplogroups appeared in Heugu, and most Chikso populations showed a partial of four haplogroups. These results will be useful for stable conservation and efficient management of Korean cattle breeds.

  • Background: The mining industry is known worldwide for its highly risky and hazardous working environment. Technological advancement in ore extraction techniques for proliferation of production levels has caused further concern for safety in this industry. Research so far in the area of safety has revealed that the majority of incidents in hazardous industry take place because of human error, the control of which would enhance safety levels in working sites to a considerable extent. Methods: The present work focuses upon the analysis of human factors such as unsafe acts, preconditions for unsafe acts, unsafe leadership, and organizational influences. A modified human factor analysis and classification system (HFACS) was adopted and an accident predictive fuzzy reasoning approach (FRA)-based system was developed to predict the likelihood of accidents for manganese mines in India, using analysis of factors such as age, experience of worker, shift of work, etc. Results: The outcome of the analysis indicated that skill-based errors are most critical and require immediate attention for mitigation. The FRA-based accident prediction system developed gives an outcome as an indicative risk score associated with the identified accident-prone situation, based upon which a suitable plan for mitigation can be developed. Conclusion: Unsafe acts of the worker are the most critical human factors identified to be controlled on priority basis. A significant association of factors (namely age, experience of the worker, and shift of work) with unsafe acts performed by the operator is identified based upon which the FRA-based accident prediction model is proposed.

  • Recently, the demand for SAR imaging is growing to monitor natural disasters or military sites to foresee topographic changes, where optical sensing is not easily available. High-resolution SAR images are useful in exploring topography and monitoring artificial land objects in all weather conditions. In this paper, high resolution SAR images acquired from KOMPSAT-5 are exploited for the applications of change detection and classification. In order to detect change areas, amplitude change detection (ACD) and coherence change detection (CCD) algorithms are employed and their performances are compared in practical applications. For enhanced performance, the potential of small scaled change detection is explored by combining multi-temporary SAR images. The k-means and SVM methods are applied for land classifications and their performances are compared by applying to the real spaceborne SAR images.

  • This paper probabilisticly analyses the variance of the soil parameters on kinds of soil by conducting statistical analysis through the Unified Soil Classification System. Data used are the result of soil test which the Korea National Housing Corporation conducted in 176 sites of 74 cities throughout the country during the past 13 years from 1974 to 1986. In this paper, soil parameters such as natural water contents, specific gravity of soil particle, Atterberg limits, N-values, unconfined compression strength, compression index and shear strength parameter etc., is analysed. The result of the analysis is as follows. 1) The variance in physical properties of the soil is, when compared with coefficient of variation which is statistical variable, comparatively small. 2) The shear strength parameter is proved to be about 40% and compression index is about 32%. 3) The variance in specific gravity is 0.87-2.49% in granular soil and 0.91~5.03% in cohesive soil respectively. So, the degree of the variance is very small.

  • Shotcrete is used as a permanent lining in single shell tunnels even though shotcrete has been used as a temporary lining in NATM tunnels. Therefore, the accurate evaluation of strength parameters is very crucial because the reliable estimation of loads acting on the shotcretes is necessary to maintain the stability of tunnels. The evaluation of strength parameters of the ground far the single shell tunnels should be investigated to adapt the method in Korea because the geological condition of Korea is different from that of other country. Rock classification and strength parameters obtained from 25 tunnel sites were investigated for this study. Support types fur the different rock classes are suggested for the single shell tunnels in Korea based on the NMT because Q-system has been widely used in Korea. The support types in terms of both Q and RMR values are given based on the correlation of Q and RMR values obtained from the case studies.

  • In order to decrease the area damaged by forest fires and to prevent the occurrence of forest fires, we are making an effort to improve prevention measures for forest fires. The objective of this study is to classify hazard regions where forest fires occur based on the factors that contribute to the occurrence of forest fires. Forest fire sites in the Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do were surveyed according to the factors of forest type and topographic characteristics where the forest fires occurred. We used a correlation analysis to determine the forest fire occurrence factors and a conditional probability analysis and GIS to determine a forest fire danger index. The resulting forest fire danger index was used in the classification of forest fire occurrence risk regions.

  • Though many services offer useful information on internet, computer users are not so familiar with such services that they need an assistant system to use the services easily In the case of web sites, for example, the operators answer the users e-mail questions, but the increasing number of users makes it hard to answer the questions efficiently. In this paper, we propose an assistant system which responds to the users questions automatically and helps them browse the Hanmail Net FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) conceptually. This system uses two-level self-organizing map (SOM): the keyword clustering SOM and document classification SOM. The keyword clustering SOM reduces a variable length question to a normalized vector and the document classification SOM classifies the question into an answer class. Experiments on the 2,206 e-mail question data collected for a month from the Hanmail net show that this system is able to find the correct answers with the recognition rate of 95% and also the browsing based on the map is conceptual and efficient.
