  • Macrolide antimicrobial agents including erythromycin, roxithromycin, clarithromycin, and azithromycin are commonly used in the treatment of respiratory tract infections in children. Newer macrolides that have structural modifications of older drug erythromycin show improved change in the spectrum of activity, dosing, and administration. However, recent studies reported that increasing use of macrolide antibiotics is the main force driving the development of macrolide resistance in streptococci. In particular, azithromycin use is more likely to select for macrolide resistance with Streptococcus pneumoniae than is clarithromycin use, a possible reflection of its much longer half life. Recently, erythromycin resistance rates of S. pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes are rapidly increasing in Korea. Two main mechanisms of acquired macrolide resistance have been described, altered binding site on the bacterial ribosome encoded by the ermB gene and active macrolide efflux pump encoded by the mef gene. Relationship between the susceptibility of S. pneumoniae and the response to macrolides has been shown in studies of acute otitis media, but less clear in cases of pneumonia. This article reviews the spectrum of activity, pharmacokinetic properties, mechanisms of action and resistance, and clinical implication of resistance on the treatment of respiratory tract infections in children.

  • The corpus luteum (CL) is a temporary endocrine gland whose main function is to secrete progesterone to support pregnancy. On the other hand, the cyclic bovine CL has also been shown to be a site of prostaglandin $F_{2{\alpha}}$ ($PGF_{2{\alpha}}$) production. Although there is general agreement that endometrial $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ is an essential luteolysin in cattle, luteal $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ seems to play a luteotropic role as an autocrine and/or paracrine factor, especially for the development and maintenance of the CL. This supposition is based on evidence that some of the prerequisites for autocrine/paracrine mechanisms are present, including local production of $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ and the existence of specific binding sites within the CL. The purpose of this paper is to review the regulation of luteal $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ secretion, its action on CL as an autocrine and/or paracrine factor and the receptivity of bovine CL to. $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$.

  • The adverse effects of ethanol on cell proliferation have been described for a variety of tissues and cells. In the present study, we investigated whether chronic ethanol intoxication impairs the cell proliferation and DNA synthesis induced by oncogenic $H-ras^{V12}$ - and $v-K-ras^{V12}$-transformed cells. Ethanol treatment inhibited the cell proliferation and the DNA synthesis of control parental fibroblasts in a time- and dose-dependent manner. In contrast, ethanol did not suppress the proliferation of either oncogenic $H-ras^{V12}$ - or $v-K-ras^{V12}$ -transformed fibroblasts. Microinjection of oncogenic $H-Ras^{V12}$ protein induces DNA synthesis and ethanol treatment did not interfere with the DNA synthesis. The antiproliferative toxicity of ethanol was rescued by antioxidants, such as N-acetylcysteine and 4-methlpyrazole. These results indicate that the antiproliferative action site of ethanol toxicity lies upstream or is independent of Ras and ethanol exerts its toxicity through a free radical formation.

  • The present study was undertaken to elucidate the chracteristics in behavioral changes of chronic doses of methamphetamine on open-field activity in rats. On the other hand, the nucleus accumbens septi(NAB), one of the major areas containing mesolimbic dopaminergic terminals, has been considered to be an important site of action for dopaminergic agonists. Therefore, it also designed to investigated influence of NAB lesions. on behavioral effects of chronic-methamphetamine. Caudal and rostral areas of NAB(cr-NAB) were lesioned by applying DC of 3.0 mA for 15 sec., simultaneously. The results were as follows: 1) The rats exhibited hyperactivity after chronic administration of methamphetamine 2) The cr-NAB-lesioned rats showed a significant increase in locomotor activity only at 2 days after NAB lesions 3) Methamphetamine-induced hyperactivity was significantly decreased in the NAB-lesioned rats, and stereotyped behavior was induced instead by the drug. 4) Dopamine content of striatum was significantly decreased and serotonin content of olfactory bulb was significantly increased in NAB-lesioned rats. These results suggest that NAB plays an important role in locomotor activity and methamphetamine-induced hyperactivity.

  • The use of intravenous catheters are occasionally complicated by intravascular fragments and swelling of the catheter fragments. We present a patient in whom an intravenous catheter fragments was retrieved from the dorsal metacarpal vein following its incidental CT examination detection. The case of demonstrates the utility of microscopy and multi-detector CT in localizing small of subtle intravenous catheter fragments as a human error. A case of IV catheter fragments in the metacarpal vein, in which reproducible and microscopy data allowed complete localization of a missing fragments and guided surgery with respect to the optimal incision site for fragments removal. These reproducible studies may help to determine the best course of action and treatment for the patient who presents with such a case.

  • Campylobacter jejuni is one of the most prevalent organisms associated with foodborne illness across the globe causing campylobacteriosis and gastritis. Many proteins of C. jejuni are still unidentified. The purpose of this study was to determine the structure and function of a non-annotated hypothetical protein (HP) from C. jejuni. A number of properties like physiochemical characteristics, 3D structure, and functional annotation of the HP (accession No. CAG2129885.1) were predicted using various bioinformatics tools followed by further validation and quality assessment. Moreover, the protein-protein interactions and active site were obtained from the STRING and CASTp server, respectively. The hypothesized protein possesses various characteristics including an acidic pH, thermal stability, water solubility, and cytoplasmic distribution. While alpha-helix and random coil structures are the most prominent structural components of this protein, most of it is formed of helices and coils. Along with expected quality, the 3D model has been found to be novel. This study has identified the potential role of the HP in 2-methylcitric acid cycle and propionate catabolism. Furthermore, protein-protein interactions revealed several significant functional partners. The in-silico characterization of this protein will assist to understand its molecular mechanism of action better. The methodology of this study would also serve as the basis for additional research into proteomic and genomic data for functional potential identification.

  • Due to the wide growth and popularity of social network website, large numbers of users discover these social network sites are a place where they can be able to spend their leisure time sharing interests, sharing ideas freely, sharing personal experience, and also to search for new friends or partners. These websites give an opportunity for its users to socialize with new people and to keep in touch or reconnect with current or old friends and families across disperse continents, which traditionally replace the common traditional methods. These social network websites need accurate and careful investigations and findings on the usability issues for effective interactivity and more usability. However, little research might have previously invested on the usability of these social network websites. Therefore, we propose a new framework to study and test the usability of these social network sites. We namely call our framework "Interactivity". This framework will enable developers to assess the usability of the social network sites. It will provide an overview of the user's behavior while interacting in these social network websites. Performance of the framework will be performed using Camtasia software. This software will entirely capture the interactivity of users including the screen and the movements, which the screen and the motion of the user action will undergo to analysis at the end of our research.

  • The paper discusses a novel educational initiative in e-commerce pedagogy where students work on an e-government project. The paper describes a two-semester joint e-government project conducted by the town of Amherst, NY, and the State University of New York at Buffalo. During the first semester, students in a graduate e-commerce course in the School of Management were instructed to identify and analyze management issues valuable for small or middle size local government. In the second semster graduate students from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering designed and implemented prototypes of three e-government portals: an on-line action site for governmental procurement (E-Procurement), a portal for reservation of community recreation facilities (E-Recreation), and a portal for online dog registration (E-DogRegistration) combining a central registry of dog owners with distributed veterinarian databases. The objective of this initiative is twofold. First, it saves the local government resources by eliminating duplication of services and by using students as developers. Second, it provides students with real life hands-on experience. The paper discusses both the technical issues involved in the implementation of the project, and the management issues that need to be taken into account to enhance the e-commerce experience for the ordinary citizen and local governments.
