  • A refractory grade low-cost silicon nitride powder was chemically analyzed, purified, and gas pressure sintered with the sintering additives. As-received powder contained a significant amount of free-Si, 0.72 wt% of Fe, 0.5 wt% of al and 0.31 wt% of Ca. Oxygen and carbon contents of the powder were 3.3 wt% and 0.4 wt%, respectively, and it consisted of 96% of $\beta$-phase and 4% of $\alpha$-phase. After lowering the Fe content and nitriding treatment, the powder was sintered with 6 wt% yttria and 2 wt% alumina for 1 h between 1823 K and 2123 K in order to examine the sintering behavior. Fully dense samples were obtained by sintering at 2123k for 2h. For comparison, a commercially available high-grade powder was also sintered at the same time. The low-cost powder showed much slower densification rate than the high-grade powder. Fully dense sample prepared from the low-cost powder contained a number of coarse grains with a low aspect ratio, and its hardness, fracture toughness, flexural strength and thermal shock resistance were not as good as those of the sample prepared with the high-grade powder.

  • Nanopowders of MgO and $TiO_2$ were made by high energy ball milling. The rapid synthesis and sintering of the nanostructured $MgTiO_3$ compound was investigated by the high-frequency induction heated sintering process. The advantage of this process is that it allows very quick densification to near theoretical density and inhibition grain growth. Nanocrystalline materials have received much attention as advanced engineering materials with improved physical and mechanical properties. As nanomaterials possess high strength, high hardness, excellent ductility and toughness, undoubtedly, more attention has been paid for the application of nanomaterials. A highly dense nanostructured $MgTiO_3$ compound was produced with simultaneous application of 80 MPa pressure and induced current within 2 min. The sintering behavior, gain size and mechanical properties of $MgTiO_3$ compound were investigated.

  • The comparison of sintering behavior and mechanical properties of ultra-fine WC-10wt.%Co and WC-10wt.%Fe hard materials produced by high-frequency induction heated sintering (HFIHS) was accomplished using ultra fine powder of WC and binders(Co, Fe). The advantage of this process allows very quick densification to near theoretical density and prohibition of grain growth in nano-structured materials. Highly dense WC-10Co and WC-10Fe with a relative density of up to 99% could be obtained with simultaneous application of 60 MPa pressure and induced current within 1 minute without significant change in grain size. The hardness and fracture toughness of the dense WC-10Co and WC-10Fe composites produced by HFIHS were investigated.

  • In this research, the fine-structure TiO2+Ti bulks have been fabricated by the combined application of magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) and subsequent sintering, and their densification behavior was investigated. The obtained density of $TiO_2$+Ti bulk prepared by the combined processes was increased with increasing MPC pressure from 0.7 to 1.7 GPa. Relatively higher density (88%) in the MPCed specimen at 0.7Gpa was attributed to the decreasing of the inter-particle distance of pre-compacted component. High pressure and rapid compaction by Magnetic Pulsed Compaction could reduce shrinkage rate (about 10%) of the sintered bulks compared to that of general processing (about 20%). Mixing conditions of PVA, water, Ti and $TiO_2$ nano powder for compaction of $TiO_2$ nano powder did not affect on density and shrinkage of the sintered bulks due to high pressure of MPC.

  • ${\beta}-Tricalcium$ phosphate (TCP) was added to $Al_2O_3$ to make a biomaterial with good mechanical properties. Using a TCP powder synthesized by a polymer complexation method, $Al_2O_3$ composites containing 30 wt% TCP were fabricated and characterized for densification, phase, microstructure, strength, and fracture toughness. With optimizing the powder preparation conditions, a high densification of 97 % was obtained by sintering at $1350^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. No reaction between the two components occurred and there was no transition to ${\alpha}-TCP$. TCP grains with a size of $2-4{\mu}m$ were well surrounded by $Al_2O_3$ grains with a size of $1{\mu}m$ or less. Strength 61(Brazilian) or 187(3-p MOR) MPa, and fracture toughness 1.7 (notched beam) or 2.5 (indentation) $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ were obtained, which are large improvements over the strength of $TCP/Al_2O_3$ composites and toughness of TCP and hydroxyapatite in previous studies.

  • This article presents the challenges toward the successful consolidation of $Al_2O_3$ nanopowder using magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC). In this research the ultrafine-structured $Al_2O_3$ bulks have been fabricated by the combined application of magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) and subsequent sintering, and their properties were investigated. The obtained density of $Al_2O_3$ bulk prepared by the combined processes was increased with increasing MPC pressure from 0.5 to 1.25 GPa. Relatively higher hardness and fracture toughness in the MPCed specimen at 1.25 GPa were attributed to the retention of the nanostructure in the consolidated bulk without cracks. The higher fracture toughness could be attributed to the crack deflection by homogeneous distribution and the retention of nanostructure, regardless of the presence of porosities. In addition, the as consolidated $Al_2O_3$ bulk using magnetic pulsed compaction showed enhanced breakdown voltage.

  • The electrical property and microstructure in $BaTiO_3$ ceramics doped rare-earth ions with intermediate ionic size ($Dy^{3+},Ho^{3+},Y^{3+}$) were investigated. Microstructures have been characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Incorporation of rare-earth ions to $BaTiO_3$ ceramics depended on their ionic radius sensitively. Compared to Ho and Y ions, Dy ions provide $BaTiO_3$ ceramics with the high rate of densification and well-developed shell formation, due to their high solubility in the $BaTiO_3$ lattice, but the microstructure of Dy doped $BaTiO_3$ ceramics is unstable at high temperature, because Dy ions could not play a role of grain growth inhibition, leading to diffuse into $BaTiO_3$ lattice continuously after completion of densification during sintering. Comparing electrical property and microstructure, it is shown that the reliability of capacitor improved by high shell ratio.

  • Metal additive manufacturing (AM) technologies are classified into two groups according to the consolidation mechanisms and densification degrees of the as-built parts. Densified parts are obtained via a single-step process such as powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, and sheet lamination AM technologies. Conversely, green bodies are consolidated with the aid of binder phases in multi-step processes such as binder jetting and material extrusion AM. Green-body part shapes are sustained by binder phases, which are removed for the debinding process. Chemical and/or thermal debinding processes are usually devised to enhance debinding kinetics. The pathways to final densification of the green parts are sintering and/or molten metal infiltration. With respect to innovation types, the multi-step metal AM process allows conventional powder metallurgy manufacturing to be innovated continuously. Eliminating cost/time-consuming molds, enlarged 3D design freedom, and wide material selectivity create opportunities for the industrial adoption of multi-step AM technologies. In addition, knowledge of powders and powder metallurgy fuel advances of multi-step AM technologies. In the present study, multi-step AM technologies are briefly introduced from the viewpoint of the entire manufacturing lifecycle.

  • Plate-type phosphor is a promising substitute in overcoming the issues related to the powder phosphor paste mixed with resin. In this research, $Ca-{\alpha}-SiAlON:Eu^{2+}$ plate phosphor ($Ca_xSi_{12-(m+n)}Al_{m+n}O_nN_{16-n}:Eu_y$) was investigated for the varied compositions (m,n) of the host crystal with the fixed Eu content (y). Densification was promoted for the compositions with increasing 'm' values for the m=2n relationship. Dictated by the Eu concentration inside the phosphor crystal, photoluminescence intensity was stronger in ${\alpha}2$ specimen (m = 3.0, n = 1.5) containing the second phases when compared to ${\alpha}1$ specimen (m = 1.5, n = 0.75) comprising a single-phase ${\alpha}$-SiAlON. The concentration of Eu in the non-emitting amorphous interfacial glass phase was 2~4 times of the designed Eu concentration inside the ${\alpha}$-SiAlON crystal.
