Effects of the Addition of $La_2O_3$ on Mechanical Properties and Machinability of $Si_3N_4$ Ball

  • Silicon nitride with adding La$_2$O$_3$ was sintered by gas pressure sintering (GPS) technique at $1950^{\circ}C$, in $N_2$ gas at 3 MPa, for 2h. Mechanical properties such as hardness, flexural strength, and fracture toughness were determined as a function of the GPS holding time and the contents of La$_2$O$_3$ in silicon nitride. Also machinability of silicon nitride ball with various GPS holding time and amount of La$_2$O$_3$ was evaluated by magnetic fluid grinding (MFG) method. In this study it was found that machinability was influenced significantly with La$_2$O$_3$ contents. However, the different GPS holding time did not affect the machinability very much.

  • The business of manufacturing is increasingly becoming time-compressing, precise and long-life oriented, owing to various needs from the consumers and harsh global competition. With the emergence of the layer laminate manufacturing method, it is possible to produce prototypes directly from 3D CAD and additive process, the production time and cost have shortened dramatically. However there are some problems like surface-step, dimensional deviation and warp. A newly developed powder casting is suitable for rapid-manufacturing metallic tools. Powder casting can serve as a promising rapid tooling method because of high density characteristics and low dimensional shrinkage below 0.1% during sintering and infiltration. By this process, we have realized significant time savings bypassing the wait for prototype tooling and cost savings eliminating the expense of conventional prototype tooling process.

Sol-Gel법에 의한 Pb(Zr,Ti)$O_3$ 박막의 제조 및 유전 특성 (Preparation and Dielectric properties of the Pb(Zr,Ti)$O_3$ Thin Film by Sol-Gel Method)

  • In this study, $Pb(Zr_xTi_{1-x})O_3$(x=0.65, 0.52, 0.35) thin films were fabricated by Sol-Gel method. A stock solution with excess Pb 10[mol.%] of $Pb(Zr_xTi_{1-x})O_3$ was made and spin-coated on the Pt/$SiO_2$/Si substrate at 4000[rpm] for 30[sec.]. Coated specimens were dried on the hot-plate at $400[^{\circ}C]$ for 10[min.]. Sintering temperature and time were $500{\sim}800[^{\circ}C]$ and $1{\sim}60$[min.]. To investigate crystallization condition, PZT thin films were analyzed with sintering temperature, time and composition by the XRD. The microstructure of thin films were investigated by SEM. The ferroelectric perovskite phases precipitated under the sintering of $700[^{\circ}C]$ for 1 hour. In the PZT(52/48) composition, dielectric constant and dielectric loss were 2133, 2.2[%] at room temperature, respectively.

동결 주조법으로 제조된 티타늄 옥사이드 폼의 구조 연구 (A Morphological Study on the Titanium-Oxide Foams Processed Using Freeze-Casting)

  • The $TiO_2$ foam synthesized using freeze-casting is a promising photocatalyst and photovoltaic electrode for a variety of energy applications, because the freeze-casting technique is easy to use, cheap, and suitable for mass-production. Despite its several advantages, little scientific information is available on the processing and morphology of the $TiO_2$ foams processed by freeze-casting. In particular, no systematic study has been performed on the microstructural evolution and morphological change of the rutile-phase $TiO_2$ foams during sintering. Therefore, in the present study, several $TiO_2$ foam samples were produced using the freeze-casting technique, which were then sintered at a relatively high temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$ for 1, 2, and 4 h to compare the morphological changes in the microstructure and to understand the effects of processing parameters of the rutile-phase $TiO_2$ foams. The foam ligament size increased near linearly with increasing sintering time whereas the average pore size decreased only slightly with increasing sintering time, with changes in particle morphology from sphere to rod and complete phase transformation from anatase to rutile.

  • $Si_3N_4$에 2 wt% $Al_2O_3$와 6 wt% $Y_2O_3$을 첨가한 분말을 가스압소결 방법으로 시편을 제조하였다. 이때 소결시 조건(온도, 압력, 시간) 변화에 대한 기계적 특성 변화를 비교하였다. 이때 나타난 결과에 의하면 $1900^{\circ}C$, 3 MPa에서 1시간 동안 유지시켰을 때 최적의 조건을 갖는다는 것을 보여주었다. 이는 온도를 높여 주거나 유지 시간을 길게 하였을 때 입자 조대화에 의해 기계적 특성이 떨어지는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 그러나 압력을 증가시킬 때에는 미세한 조직을 가지므로 기계적 특성은 좋아짐을 나타내지만 파괴 인성이 떨어지는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 이로 인해 소결시 최적의 조건을 찾는 것이 중요함을 알 수 있었다.

가성소다를 이용한 $\alpha{\;}-{\;}Al_2O_3$의 소결반응 (Sintering of $\alpha{\;}-{\;}Al_2O_3$ with NaOH)

  • This study was investigated to the reaction of alumina sintering with alkaline. The soluble $NaAlO_2$ was made after the commercial ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ was calcinated with NaOH. The reaction of alumina was carried out to be based on the effects of calcination temperature, time, and the mixing ratio of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3/NaOH$. The alumina was calcined over $500^{\circ}C$ with NaOH powder after it was sieved with 170/270 mesh. The calcined alumina with NaOH powder was dissolved into $25^{\circ}C$ distilled water and filtrated, and HCI was added to adapt pH 6.5~7.5. The residue was separated with vacuum pump for filtration after it was adapted to proper pH, and aluminum compound was precipitated with $Al(OH)_3$. The investigation was carried out with the variables; the calcination temperature($500-900^{\circ}C$), the calcination time (30~90 min), and the concentration of HCI when leaching(0.5~3.0N) respectively. In this investigation, the main product of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ and NaOH was $NaAlO_2$ and the maximum conversion ratio was 91.4% under the optimum conditions as followed ; the ratio of NaOH/${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ was 1.5 and the calcination conditions were $800^{\circ}C$ and 90 min.

볼밀링한 Bi-Te-Sb계 분말의 열전특성에 관한 연구 (Thermoelectric Property of Ball Milled Bi-Te-Sb Powder)

  • The p-type semiconductor $Bi_2Te_3-Sb_2Te_3$ thermoelectric materials were fabricated by melting, milling and sintering process and their thermoelectric properties were characterized. The compound materials were ball-milled with milling time and the powders were sintered by spark plasma sintering process. The ball milled powders had equiaxial shape and approedmately $1\~3{\mu}m$ in size. The figure of meritz of sintered thermoelectric materials decreased with milling time because of lowered electrical resistivity. The thermoelectric properties of $Bi_2Te_3-Sb_2Te_3$ materials have been discussed in terms of electrical property with ball mill process.

The Effect of Fused Silica Crystallization on Flexural Strength and Shrinkage of Ceramic Cores for Investment Casting

  • Complex designed silica-based ceramic cores were fabricated by ceramic injection molding. Slow heating rate (0.2K/min) for debinding restrained bloating on the surface of ceramic cores. To investigate effect of sintering conditions on mechanical properties of ceramic cores, green bodies were sintered at temperatures in a range from $1150^{\circ}C$ to $1400^{\circ}C$ for various dwelling times (6 h to 48 h). Sintering above $1300^{\circ}C$ for 12 h and dwelling time over 24 h at $1200^{\circ}C$ reduce the flexural strength and increase the linear shrinkage of ceramic cores. Cristobalite, formed by high sintering temperature or long dwelling time, induces reduction of mechanical properties due to its phase transformation, which is accompanied by volume contraction and microcracking. Ceramic core sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 12 h endured wax patterning and shell molding, and was manufactured successfully.

  • Gd-doped $CeO_2$, ultrafine powders were synthesized by the glycine-nitrate process and then their sintering and electrical characteristics were analysed using the dilatometric and AC impedance measurements. In the dilatometric measurements green bodies from the synthesized powders after milling shrinked to about $1470^{\circ}C$ in appearance and then expanded thermally with the increase of the heating temperature, whereas those from the synthesized powders before milling continuously shrinked to the temperatures of $1600^{\circ}C$. It may be due to the change of the packing density of the synthesized powders by milling. In the AC impedance measurements, the electrical resistivity of the Gd-doped $CeO_2$ bodies from the as-milled powders, sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$ with the increase of the sintering time, showed the minimum value at the sintering time of 10h. The minimum total resistivity of the Gd-doped $CeO_2$ bodies sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$ for 10h seems to result from the lowest activation energy by the combination between the activation energies for the resistivities at the grain interior and grain boundary.
