  • Recently, in spindle motors for hard disk drive (HDD) devices, fluid dynamic bearings (FDB) with herringbone grooves have come to be used instead of ball bearings due to the demand for high density recording of the devices etc. In this study, a 5-lobe bearing with high bearing stiffness using a sintered material was developed, and the bearing performance was examined by simulated calculations and experiments. As a result, it was clarified that the 5-lobe bearing had the required performance for practical use in the spindle motor for HDD

  • The oil-impregnated sintered bearings are used for various aplecations and, wide usages without refueling. The oil circulating mechanism operates smoothly the behavior of oil If doing at the time of passing and becoming a stationary state, and there is little thing where trouble is caused. On the other hand, the trouble of such as starting noise might be caused in the unstationary state that repeats operation for a short time. To study the behavior of oil of each parameter, we execute the numerical simulation and various verification experiments. As a result, we developed that the bearings were able to be used enough for various brief operating time in the unstationary state. Finally we have expanded the usage of the oil-impregnated sintered bearings by adding the consideration of the behavior of oil.

  • The present work deals with the theoretical prediction of static & dynamic characteristic of annular type externally pressurized thrust air bearings with metal-sintered porous media. For the evaluation of surface loading effect by machining, it is assumed that the flow at the porous surface is dominant and which is equivalent to the flow through orifice. Finite different method with over-relaxation method is used to solve the numerical problems. The influences of radius ratio, supply pressure and squeeze number on performances are investigated, as the results. The results of this study can be used to predict the optimal running condition and stable realm of porous bearings.

  • The electrical and frictional properties of oil-impregnated sintered-metal bearing (OSB) and herringbone-grooved fluid bearing (HFB) with varying loads and speeds were measured. OSB shows very good performance up to 20,000 rpm and 0.05 N, and HFB successfully works up to 35,000 rpm and 0.05 N. From the endurance tests on start-stop and continuous operation, it was confirmed that those bearings could be mass-produced fur use on scanner motor in a laser scanner unit.

  • The performance of porous bearing under different lubricants and lubricating conditions was experimentally investigated in this study. In order to carry out the experiments, a new test rig was designed to determine the tribological properties of based sintered bronze journal bearings that were manufactured by powder metallurgy (P/M) techniques. To determine the effects of lubricating conditions with and without oil supplement (OS) on the tribological characteristics of these bearings under static loading and periodic loadings, some experiments were carried out using different lubricants. In the tests, pure base oil (SAE 20W50), two fully formulated commercial engine oils (SAE20W50) and lubricating oils with commercial additive concentration ratio of 3% were used. The worn surfaces of test bearings were examined using optical microscopy. Experimental results showed that the change in friction coefficient was more stable and in smaller magnitude under static loading than that of periodic loading. In addition, the friction coefficient and the wear rate conducted with base oil resulted in higher values than those of fully formulated oils with and without OS lubricating conditions. The experimental results obtained in this study indicated that the correct selection of lubricant and suitable running conditions were very important on the tribological characteristics of porous bearings.

  • Advanced composite-sintered bushings are widely utilized in the areas of excavators and injection molding machines as a journal bearing. Since the bearings are mainly used under high loads, service life should be long and the stored oil of inner bushings has to be continually fed into the bearing. The composite-sintered bushings are consisted of the two different materials; outer steel materials and inner porous sintered materials respectively. High temperature diffusion bonding has been applied for holding the both materials of the bushing together. Therefore, it is very important that the bonding reliability has to be assured and evaluated in manufacturing process. Finite element method (FEM) is performed in order to evaluate the minimum allowable flaw sizes that are possibly generated in the composite-sintered bushings. Additionally, the composite-sintered bushings were undergone ultrasonic C-scan tests to find out the size of inherent flaws through artificially simulated UT signal analysis.

  • [ $MoS_2$ ], is a well-known metal sulfide applied as solid lubricants and an additive to prolong the life of sintered bearings under severe conditions. However, the high price of $MoS_2$ limited its wide application. This study is aimed to investigate the possibility far application to solid lubricants for $Cu_2S$ as a substitute of $MoS_2$. Bronzes added $Cu_2S$ and $MoS_2$, are produced by powder metallurgy in this study, and then evaluated their friction and wear properties., as well as sintered bronze. The sliding wear test using pin-on-disc type machine, was conducted at several sliding speeds for three type test pieces sintered bronzes added $Cu_2S$ and $MoS_2$, and sintered bronze without lubricants. Addition of $Cu_2S$ to bronze leads to relatively good friction properties, although it is not so good as addition of $MoS_2$. However, the wear properies of sintered bronze added $Cu_2S$ are better than that of sintered bronze added $MoS_2$.

  • This study aims to Improve the productivity in forming of flanged thrust engine bearings from two kinds of laminated sheet materials by integrating the forming processes or by reducing the number of the subsequent sizing and machining processes or by modifying the forming tools used. For steel-Al rolled blank, a design scheme for the one-step forming operation and the geometry of the tool set required is suggested and is verified its usefulness by the finite element simulation. And for steel-Cu sintered blank, the results of experiment and finite element analysis show that it is possible to improve the dimensional accuracy of formed products and to reduce the number of sizing processes just by modifying the shape and dimensions of initial blanks and flange forming dies, and by controlling the spring force.

  • The development of high performance materials is very important subject in order to enhance the properties of bearings whose role is to transfer energy harmoniously by reducing the problem of friction and wear down, etc. between the interacting solid surfaces in relative motion under high loads in comply with mechanical operating mechanism of engines. In this study, several (100-x)Al-xSn coating films (where x=85, 75, 65 atomic % at Al) on substrates which are abt. 2mm thickenss of Kelmet layer sintered back steel were prepared by using RF sputtering system. These coating films were observed the morphology by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and investigated the crystal structure by XRD(X-ray Diffractor) for their properties. And friction coefficient of these films was measured by ball-on-disc tester for their tribological properties. From the experimental results, it was shown that high performance properties of bearing can be improved greatly by controlling the composition and morphology of material surface with effective use of the plasma-assisted sputtering process.

  • This paper is presented for the performance of the Fluid Dynamic Bearing(FDB) by the groove design and the tooling condition. Recently, spindle motors which require smaller size, lower sound noise, lower vibration, and higher speed of the rotation have been placed in high value-added products including Digital Lightening Processors(DLP), Hard Disk Drives(HDD), and ODDs. The spindle motors using the sintered porous metal bearing have higher vibration and acoustic noise by dry contact and large tolerance of the bearing parts. The Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) with grooves is appropriate for spindle motors adequate in regards to mechanical vibration and acoustic noise. The paper shows the performance comparisons of between sintered porous metal bearing and FDB, and each FDBs according to the tooling deviations of grooves by the Finite Element Analysis(FEA) of the mechanical field. This paper shows the methods to make the grooves, the groove's depth, and the prototype of the motor with the fluid dynamic bearing. The performance characteristics of the grooves with the FDB are verified by the experimental results.
