The subsidence mechanism of ground surface is a complex phenomenon when multiple seam coal mining operations are carried out. Particularly, the coal mining beneath karstic formations causes a very special form of subsidence. The subsidence causes elasto-plastic deformation of the karstic layers and the collapse of cavities leads to dolinization and/or sinkhole formation. In this study, a sinkhole with a depth of 90 m and a width of 25 m formed in Gelik district within the coal-basin of Zonguldak (NW, Turkey) induced by multiple seam coal mining operations in the past has been presented as a case-history together with two-dimensional numerical simulations and InSAR monitoring. The computational results proved that the sinkhole was formed as a result of severe yielding in the close vicinity of the faults in contact with karstic formation due to multiple seam longwall mining at different levels.
In recent years, urban areas occurred several times a sinkhole. In Korea, this limestone area where the sink hole sink holes occur based on not much was seen as a very rare phenomenon. However, the occurrence of accidents in recent Subsidence and urban areas is occurring in the limestone sinkhole may yet see another one called artificial Subsidence phenomenon. Subsidence in urban areas can have various causes, such as depression groundwater level changes due to the influence of soil, underground, etc. underground utilities by anthropogenic actions. But a lot of research on natural sinkhole by geological experts continued steadily since the past Subsidence that occurred in recent years the city has become an urgent problem to formulate a countermeasure to be very concerned about the human and material damage. In this study, the city by analyzing existing research on the causes and countermeasures of Subsidence recently released look at the announced sinkhole, published statistics and cases of Subsidence data, and overseas corresponding practices in each relevant agencies and to suggest measures for local Subsidence.
Sinkhole subsidence and collapse is a common geohazard often formed in karst areas such as the state of Florida, United States of America. To predict the sinkhole occurrence, we need to understand the formation mechanism of sinkhole and its karst hydrogeology. For this purpose, investigating the factors affecting sinkholes is an essential and important step. The main objectives of the presenting study are (1) the development of a machine learning (ML)-based model, namely C5.0 decision tree (C5.0 DT), for the prediction of sinkhole susceptibility, which accounts for sinkhole/subsidence inventory and sinkhole contributing factors (e.g., geological/hydrogeological) and (2) the construction of a regional-scale sinkhole susceptibility map. The study area is east central Florida (ECF) where a cover-collapse type is commonly reported. The C5.0 DT algorithm was used to account for twelve (12) identified hydrogeological factors. In this study, a total of 1,113 sinkholes in ECF were identified and the dataset was then randomly divided into 70% and 30% subsets for training and testing, respectively. The performance of the sinkhole susceptibility model was evaluated using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, particularly the area under the curve (AUC). The C5.0 model showed a high prediction accuracy of 83.52%. It is concluded that a decision tree is a promising tool and classifier for spatial prediction of karst sinkholes and subsidence in the ECF area.

Underground mining causes surface subsidence long after the mining operation had been ceased. Surface subsidence can be in the form of saucer-shaped depression or collapsed chimneys or sinkholes. Sinkhole formations are predominant over shallow-depth room and pillar mines having weak overburden strata. In this study, occurrences of sinkholes due to mining activity are assessed based on local geological conditions and mining parameters using fuzzy reasoning techniques. All input and output parameters are represented with linguistic hedges. Numerous fuzzy rules are developed to relate sinkhole occurrences with input parameters using fuzzy relational matrix. Based on the combined fuzzy rules, possibility of sinkhole occurrences can be ascertained once the geological and mining parameters of any area are known.
The occurrence of ground subsidence and sinkhole in downtown areas, which threatens the safety of citizens, has been frequently reported. Among the various mechanisms of a sinkhole, soil erosion through the damaged part of the sewer pipe was found to be the main cause in Seoul. In this study, a random forest model for predicting the occurrence of sinkholes caused by damaged sewer pipes based on sewage pipe information was trained using the information on the sewage pipe and the locations of the sinkhole occurrence case in Seoul. The random forest model showed excellent performance in the prediction of sinkhole occurrence after the optimization of its hyperparameters. In addition, it was confirmed that the sewage pipe length, elevation above sea level, slope, depth of landfill, and the risk of ground subsidence were affected in the order of sewage pipe information used as input variables. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for the preparation of a sinkhole susceptibility map and the establishment of an underground cavity exploration plan and a sewage pipe maintenance plan.

Recent settlements and sinkhole openings in urban areas have caused social problems such as damage to roads and structures, fear of the public, and loss of property. Several studies have demonstrated that surface subsidence and sinkhole opening are greatly affected by rainfall and rainfall intensity in urban areas. In this paper, we analyzed the relationship with the characteristics of recorded rainfall data using the ground subsidence database reported in major cities. The correlations were found using sedimentation and precipitation data from 2010 to 2014. The duration and intensity of a given precipitation have evolved to obtain an effect on ground sedimentation rate (SR). The results show that the relationship between SR and precipitation is asymptotic and can be modeled by a hyperbolic equation. Through this study, it is possible to predict the occurrence of ground subsidence due to precipitation in advance.
Graphical method has been widely applied to the prediction of subsidence area, and is known to have advantages in analysis of trough subsidence which is common in horizontally seamed mine area. However, it is reported that most of the ore bodies in Korea are geologically inclined from sub-horizontal to steep, and therefore, the sinkhole subsidence is frequent in abandoned mine area. For these reasons, it is not to be desired that graphical method is applied for predicting the subsidence occurrence. This paper describes the results of subsidence zone prediction considering the dip direction and the opposite direction of inclined ore bodies from the case studies on the 163 subsidence occurrence regions. The results show also the assumed angle which can define the range of subsidence in the surface area. In conclusion, the limit of this angle is suggested after taking into account the comparison with graphical method and the application to the case histories.
Recently, interest in ground subsidence in urban areas has increased after a large sinkhole occurred near the high-story building area in Jamsil, Seoul, Korea, in 2014. If a massive sinkhole occurs in an urban area, it is crucial to assess its risk rapidly. Access to humans for on-site safety diagnosis may be difficult because of the additional risk of collapse in the disaster area. Generally, inspection using drones equipped with high-speed lidar sensors can be utilized. However, if the sinkhole is created vertically to a depth of 100 m, similar to the sinkhole in Guatemala, the drone cannot be applied because of the wireless communication limit and turbulence inside the sinkhole. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) scanning system was fabricated and operated using a towed cable in a massive vertical sinkhole to a depth of 200 m. A high-speed lidar sensor was used to obtain a continuous cross-sectional shape at a certain depth. An inertial-measuring unit was applied to compensate for the error owing to the rotation and pendulum movement of the measuring unit. A reconstruction algorithm, including the compensation scheme, was developed. In a vertical hole with a depth of 180 m in the mining area, the fabricated system was applied to scan 0-165 m depth. The reconstructed shape was depicted in a 3D graph.
Many old domestic mines were excavated with the room and pillar method or the sublevel caving method and they involve the great possibility of surface subsidence, especially in the shallow depth mines. In most of these cases, the mine roadways and openings are very irregular in shape and the information about the local geology is uncertain. Consequently it is not simple to standardize the estimation method for the possibility of subsidence, especially the sinkhole subsidence. In this study, the fuzzy reasoning method has been applied for development of estimating the possibility of subsidence occurrence in abandoned mine area. This method has the advantage in producing the reliable estimation results with a simple performance procedure even when the precise information on the local geology and mining conditions is rare. For the verification of applicability of this method, the developed method has been applied to Kumho mine in Bonghwa, Kyungbook province and the Choong-ju mine in Iryu, Choongbook province where the surface subsidence occurred already.
Sinkhole subsidence occurs over abandoned mine workings and can be detrimental to human lives, damage to properties and other surface structures. In this study, simulation of sinkhole development process is performed using special finite element procedure. Especially, creation of mine voids due to roof falls and generation of goaf from broken rocks are simulated using active-passive-active finite elements. An active or solid element can be made passive or void once the tensile failure criterion is satisfied in the specified sinkhole formation zone. Upon completion of sinkhole development process, these passive elements in again be made active to simulate goal region. Several finite element models are analyzed to evaluate the relationships between sinkhole formation with width of gallery. depth of mine, roof condition and bulking factor of roof rocks. This study demonstrates that the concept of passive elements in numerical analysis can be used effectively for analyzing sinkhole formation or roof fall phenomenon in general.
