Low-power and Lossy Networks (LLNs) have become the common network infrastructure for a wide scope of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. For efficient routing in LLNs, IETF provides a standard solution, namely the IPv6 Routing Protocol for LLNs (RPL). It enables effective interconnectivity with IP networks and flexibly can meet the different application requirements of IoT deployments. However, it still suffers from different open issues, particularly in large-scale setups. These include the node unreachability problem which leads to increasing routing losses at RPL sink nodes. It is a result of the event of memory overflow at LLNs devices due to their limited hardware capabilities. Although this can be alleviated by the establishment of multi-sink topologies, RPL still lacks the support for effective load balancing among multiple sinks. In this paper, we address the need for an efficient multi-sink load balancing solution to enhance the performance of PRL in large-scale scenarios and alleviate the node unreachability problem. We propose a new RPL objective function, Multi-Sink Load Balancing Objective Function (MSLBOF), and introduce the Memory Utilization metrics. MSLBOF enables each RPL node to perform optimal sink selection in a way that insure better memory utilization and effective load balancing. Evaluation results demonstrate the efficiency of MSLBOF in decreasing packet loss and enhancing network stability, compared to MRHOF in standard RPL.

In this paper, we propose a sink-location management and data-routing scheme to effectively support the mobile sink in solar-powered WSN. Battery-based wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have a limited lifetime due to their limited energy, but solar energy-based WSNs can be supplied with energy periodically and can operate forever. On the other hand, introduction of mobile sink in WSNs can solve some energy unbalance problem between sink-neighboring nodes and outer nodes which is one of the major challenges in WSNs. However, there is a problem that additional energy should be consumed to notify each sensor node of the location of the randomly moving mobile sink. In the proposed scheme, one of the nodes that harvests enough energy in each cluster are selected as the cluster head, and the location information of the mobile sink is shared only among the cluster heads, thereby reducing the location management overhead. In addition, the overhead for setting the routing path can be removed by transferring data in the opposite direction to the path where the sink-position information is transferred among the heads. Lastly, the access node is introduced to transmit data to the sink more reliably when the sink moves frequently.
Wireless sensor networks have many sensor nodes which response sudden events in a sensor fields. Some efficient routing protocol is required in a sensor networks with mobile sink node. A data-path template is offered for the data announcement and data request from source node and sink node respectively. Sensed data are transferred from source node to sink node using short-distance calculation. Typical protocols for the wireless networks with mobile sink are TTDD(Two-Tier Data Dissemination) and CBPER(Cluster-Based Power-Efficient Routing). The porposed SPDR(Short-Path Data Routing) protocol in this paper shows more improved energy efficiencies from the result of simulations than the typical protocols.

Clustering techniques in wireless sensor networks is developed to minimize the energy consumption of node, show the effect that increases the network lifetime. Existing clustering techniques proposed the method that increases the network lifetime equalizing each node's the energy consumption by rotating the role of CH(Cluster Head), but these algorithm did not present the resolution that minimizes the energy consumption of neighboring nodes with sink. In this paper, we propose the clustering algorithm that prolongs the network lifetime by not including a part of nodes in POS(Personal Operating Space) of the sink in a cluster and communicating with sink directly to reduce the energy consumption of CH closed to sink.

This paper suggests a data gathering scheme using dynamic branch tree in wireless sensor networks. A mobile sink gathers data from each sensor node using a dynamic data gathering tree rooted at the mobile sink node. As the sink moves, a tree that has multiple branch is formed and changed dynamically as with the position of the sink node. A hop-based scope filter and a restricted flooding scheme of the tree are also suggested. Simulation results show that the proposed data gathering scheme has better results in data arrival rate, the end-to-end delay and energy saving characteristics compared with the previous scheme.

Complementary trees are two spanning trees rooted at the sink node satisfying that any source node's two paths to the sink node on the two trees are node-disjoint. Complementary trees routing strategy is a special node-disjoint multi-path routing approach. Several complementary trees routing algorithms have been proposed, in which path discovery methods based on depth first search (DFS) or Dijkstra's algorithm are used to find a path for augmentation in each round of path augmentation step. In this paper, a novel path discovery method based on multi-tree-growing (MTG) is presented for the first time to our knowledge. Based on this path discovery method, a complementary trees routing algorithm is developed with objectives of low average path length on both spanning trees and low complexity. Measures are employed in our complementary trees routing algorithm to add a path with nodes near to the sink node in each round of path augmentation step. The simulation results demonstrate that our complementary trees routing algorithm can achieve low average path length on both spanning trees with low running time, suitable for wireless sensor networks in industrial scenarios.

In wireless sensor networks, data packets are send to the sink node. So traffic increases near the sink node. This causes delay and collision. To solve this problem, the proposed mechanism used half rotation antenna. By using a half rotation antenna, the delay of data packets can be reduced. Also we propose a method to efficiently use the energy of the node using BRN(backup receiver node) and increase the lifetime of the entire networks. Our numerical analysis and simulation results show that our mechanism outperforms RI-MAC protocol in terms of energy consumption and transmission delay.
PEGASIS, a chain-based protocol, forms chains from sensor nodes so that each node transmits and receives from a neighbor. In this way, only one node (known as a HEAD) is selected from that chain to transmit to the sink. Although PEGASIS is able to balance the workload among all of the nodes by selecting the HEAD node in turn, a considerable amount of energy may be wasted when nodes which are far away from sink node act as the HEAD. In this study, DERP (Distance-based Energy-efficient Routing Protocol) is proposed to address this problem. DERP is a chain-based protocol that improves the greedy-algorithm in PEGASIS by taking into account the distance from the HEAD to the sink node. The main idea of DERP is to adopt a pre-HEAD (P-HD) to distribute the energy load evenly among sensor nodes. In addition, to scale DERP to a large network, it can be extended to a multi-hop clustering protocol by selecting a "relay node" according to the distance between the P-HD and SINK. Analysis and simulation studies of DERP show that it consumes up to 80% less energy, and has less of a transmission delay compared to PEGASIS.
A sensor network is composed of a large number of tiny devices, scattered and deployed in a specified regions. Each sensing device has processing and wireless communication capabilities, which enable it to gather information from the sensing area and to transfer report messages to a base station. The energy-efficient routing paths are established when the base station requests a query, since each node has several characteristics such as low-power, constrained energy, and limited capacity. The established paths are recovered while minimizing the total transmit energy and maximizing the network lifetime when the paths are broken. In this paper, we propose a routing algorithm that each sensor node reports its adjacent link information to the sink node when a sink node broadcasts a query. The sink node manages the total topology and establishes routing paths. This algorithm has a benefit to find an alternative path by reducing the negotiating messages for establishing paths when the established paths are broken. To reduce the overhead of collection information, each node has a link information before reporting to the sink. Because the node recognizes which nodes are adjacent. The proposed algorithm reduces the number of required messages, because sensor nodes receive and report routing messages for establishment at the beginning of configuring routing paths, since each node keeps topology information to establish a routing path, which is useful to report sensing tasks in monitoring environments.

The wireless sensor nodes near to the fixed sink node suffer from the quickly exhausted battery energy. To address this problem, the mobile sink node has been applied to distribute the energy consumption into all wireless sensor nodes. However, since the mobile sink node moves, the data collection scheduling scheme is necessary for the sink node to receive the data from all sensor nodes as fair as possible. The application fields of wireless sensor network need the real-time processing. If the uneven data collection occurs in the wireless sensor network, the real-time processing for the urgent events can not be satisfied. In this paper, a new method is proposed to support the lair data collection between all sensor nodes. The proposed method performs the scheduling algorithm based on the resident time of the sink node staying in a radius of communication range and the amount of data transferred already. In this paper, the proposed method and existing data collection scheduling schemes are evaluated in wireless sensor network with the mobile sink node. The result shows that the proposed method provides the best fairness among all data collection schemes.
