  • Teaching an industrial robot is still a dangerous and time-consuming process. It is expected that a robot can track a trajectory that is repeatedly taught by a human operator. Teaching a robot in joint space is easier than that in Cartesian space or a work space because the robot will never lose its stability when it is taught and operated in a joint space. However, it is very easy for a robot to lose its stability when it is taught in a work space. This is because of the singular points problem in kinematics for manipulators. Thus, experts should teach a given task to a robot in a careful manner. A new algorithm that avoids the problem of singular points is proposed. Using this proposed method, a user can freely teach a robot without the chance of instability in an entire work space.

  • Solutions to the problems of structural parameter estimation from modal response using leastsquares minimization of force or displacement residuals are generally sensitive to noise in the response measurements. The sensitivity of the parameter estimates is governed by the physical characteristics of the structure and certain features of the noisy measurements. It has been shown that the regularization method can be used to reduce effects of the measurement noise on the estimation error through adding a regularization function to the parameter estimation objective function. In this paper, we adopt the regularization function as the Euclidean norm of the difference between the values of the currently estimated parameters and the a priori parameter estimates. The effect of the regularization function on the outcome of parameter estimation is determined by a regularization factor. Based on a singular value decomposition of the sensitivity matrix of the structural response, it is shown that the optimal regularization factor is obtained by using the maximum singular value of the sensitivity matrix. This selection exhibits the condition where the effect of the a priori estimates on the solutions to the parameter estimation problem is minimal. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated in comparison with certain algorithms selected from the literature by using a numerical example.

  • The plane elasticity problem of collinear cracks in a layered medium is investigated. The medium is modeled as bonded structure constituted from a surface layer and a semi-infinite substrate. Along the bond line between the two dissimilar homegeneous constituents, it is assumed that as interfacial zone having the functionally graded, nonhomogeneous elastic modulus exists. The layered medium contains three collinear cracks, one in each constituent material oriented perpendicular to the nominal interfaces. The stiffness matrix formulation is utilized and a set of homogeneous conditions relevant to the given problem is readily satisfied. The proposed mixed boundary value problem is then represented in the form of a system of integral equations with Cauchy-type singular kernels. The stress intensity factors are defined from the crack-tip stress fields possessing the standard square-root singular behavior. The resulting values of stress intensity factors mainly address the interactions among the cracks for various crack sizes and material combinations.

  • In this paper, the delay margins of the LQ and the LQG regulators are obtained in the time domain. These margins are represented in terms of the singular values of system matrices and the solutions of a Riccati equation and a Lyapunov one. And their asymptotical properties when gains tend to infinity are investigated.

  • We consider one class of bursting oscillation models, that is square-wave burster. One of the interesting features of these models is that periodic bursting solution need not to be unique or stable for arbitrarily small values of a singular perturbation parameter $\epsilon$. Recent results show that the bursting solution is uniquely determined and stable for most of the ranges of the small parameter $\epsilon$. In this paper, we present a condition of uniqueness and stability of periodic bursting solutions for all sufficiently small values of $\epsilon$ > 0.

  • The evolution of surface roughness and morphology in epitaxial Si and $Si_{0.7}Ge{0.3}$ alloys grown by UHV opm-beam sputter deposition onto nominally-singular, [100]-, and [110]-mi-scut Si(001) was investigated by stomic force microscopy and trasmission electron microscopy. The evolution of surface roughness of epitaxial Si films grown at $300^{\circ}C$ is inconsistent with conventional scaling and hyperscaling laws for kineti roughening. Unstable growth leading to the formation of mounds separated by a well-defined length scale is observed on all substrates. Contraty to previous high-temperature growth results, the presence of steps during deposition at $300^{\circ}C$ increases the tendency toward unstable growth resulting in a much earlier development of mound structures and larger surface roughnesses on vicival substrates. Strain-induced surface roughening was found to dominate in $Si_{0.7}Ge{0.3}$ alloys grown on singular Si(001) substrates at $T_S\ge450^{\circ}C$ where the coherent islands are prererentially bounded along <100> directions and eshibt {105} facetting. Increasing the film thickness above critical values for strain relaxation leads to island coalescence and surface smoothening. At very low growth temperatures ($T_s\le 250^{\circ}C$), film surfaces roughen kinetically, due to limited adatom diffusiviry, but at far lower rates than in the higher-temperature strain-induced regime. There is an intermediate growth temperature range, however, over which alloy film surfaces remain extremely smooth even at thicknesses near critical values for strain relaxation.

  • In this paper, Gabor cosine and sine transform considered as human visual filter is applied to watermarking methods for digital images. Four algorithms by using singular values or principal components of SVD in the frequency domain are proposed for watermark embedding and extraction. Two dimensional image is used as an embedded watermark. To measure the similarity between the embedded watermark image and the extracted one, a normalized correlation value is computed for the comparison of the four proposed methods with various attacks. Extracted watermark images are also provided for visual inspection. The proposed GCST-SVD method which embeds a watermark image into the lowest vertical or horizontal ac frequency band can provide useful watermarking algorithm with high correlation values and visual watermark features from experimental results for various attacks.

  • Railway track alignment Standards set a minimum lenght value for straight and circular alignments (art. 5.2.9.), in order to ensure passenger ride comfort in railway vehicles of which dynamic oscillations will thus have to be limited. The transitions between alignments can cause abrupt changes (usually called discontinuities or singular points of the alignment) of curvature, of rate of change of curvature or of rate of change of cant. A passenger is likely to experience effects due to the excitation of the elastic suspension of the vehicle which generates oscillations that are damped as the vehicle moves away from the singularity. The amplitude of these oscillations should be adequately attenuated by the damping of the suspension system within the interval between two successive singular points, especially to avoid resonances. Therefore minimum lengths between two successive singular points are stated in alignment standards. Nevertheless, these nonnative values can be overly conservative in some cases. As an alternative, track alignment designers could try to assess how much the excitation has been attenuated between two successive singular points and thus assess at which point a new singularity may be present without affecting ride comfort. Although such assessment can be made with commercial SW packages which simulate the dynamic behavior of a vehicle considered as a set of rigid bodies interconnected with elastic elements simulating the suspension systems (such as SIMPACK, ADAMS or VAMPIRE), a simplified and user-friendly computation method (based upon the analytical solution of differential equations governing the phenomenon) is made available in this paper to track design engineers, not always used to working with full dynamic models.

  • This paper presents a new numerical method to analyse tensegrity structures by using singular value decomposition and force method. The tensegrity system consisting of compressive and tensle elements are pin-jointed system. Tensegrity structures, unlike the general structure should be preceded by form-finding. Tensegrity structures form-finding of the self-equilibrium stress stability, seeking to have the process. In this study, tensegrity structures when subjected to external loads, find the optimal pre-stress values was studied.

  • We consider the problem of determining the singular stresses and electric fields in a functionally graded piezoelectric ceramic strip containing a Griffith eccentric crack under anti-plane shear loading with the theory of linear piezoelectricity. Fourier transforms are used to reduce the problem to the solution of two pairs of dual integral equations, which are then expressed to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Numerical values on the stress intensity factor and the energy release rate are obtained.
