  • We proposed a method of eye pattern detection in the 2-D image which was obtained by CCD video camera. To detect face region and eye pattern, we proposed pattern search network and batch SVD algorithm which had the statistical equivalence of PCA. We also used HMM to improve the accuracy of detection. As a result, we acknowledged that the proposed algorithm was superior to PCA pattern detection algorithm in computational cost and accuracy of defection. Furthermore, we evaluated that the proposed algorithm was possible in real-time face pattern detection with 2 frame images per second.

  • This paper explores the use of BEM based NAH to reconstruct the surface vibration of a plate in a rectangular finite cavity, in which the distances between sensors and the nearest points on the source surface are not equal. In such circumstances, different degree of information on propagating and non-propagating wave components will be detected by sensors at different positions, as well as the influence of measurement noise will vary significantly from the nearest points of measurement to the farthest ones. On the other hand, the condition number of the vibro-acoustic transfer function matrix relating normal surface velocities and field pressures will becomes high, numerically indicating an increase of linear dependency between rows of transfer function matrix. The combination of poor measurement and high condition number will result inaccurate reconstruction. Therefore, one approach to be investigated in this work is to select the measurement positions in such ways that reduce measurement redundancy, as it indicated by the condition number. The improvement is found to be significant in the numerical simulations utilizing two different criterions, spanning from over-determined to under-determined cases, and in the validation experiment.

  • The procedure to estimate the sources of noise and vibrations in a typical drum-type washing machine was presented. The sources should be identified to predict the radiated noise with computational model of structure. Source identification techniques based on singular decomposition were implemented using the measured signals of accelerometers and microphones. The finite element analysis and indirect boundary element analysis were implemented to predict the structural vibrations and the acoustic pressures at the field points. The predicted results by only structural sources were compared with those by both structural and acoustical sources. It was verified that not only the structural-borne source but also air-borne source should be considered to predict the radiated noise with better accuracy. The contribution analysis with respect to the transfer path was also preformed.

  • Satellite data have an intrinsic problem due to a number of various physical parameters, which can have a similar effect on measured radiance. Most evaluations of satellite performance have relied on comparisons with limited spatial and temporal resolution of ground-based measurements such as soundings and in-situ measurements. In order to overcome this problem, a new way of satellite data evaluation is suggested with statistical tools such as empirical orthogonal function(EOF), and singular value decomposition(SVD). The EOF analyses with OMI and OMI HCHO over northeast Asia show that the spatial pattern show high correlation with population density. This suggests that human activity is a major source of as well as HCHO over this region. However, this analysis is contradictory to the previous finding with GOME HCHO that biogenic activity is the main driving mechanism(Fu et al., 2007). To verify the source of HCHO over this region, we performed the EOF analyses with vegetation and HCHO distribution. The results showed no coherence in the spatial and temporal pattern between two factors. Rather, the additional SVD analysis between $NO_2$ and HCHO shows consistency in spatial and temporal coherence. This outcome suggests that the anthropogenic emission is the main source of HCHO over the region. We speculate that the previous study appears to be due to low temporal and spatial resolution of GOME measurements or uncertainty in model input data.

  • Recently, the technologies of mobile robots have been growing rapidly in the fields such as cleaning robot, explosive ordnance disposal robot, patrol robot, etc. However, the researches about the autonomous underwater robots have not been done so much, and they still remain at the low level of technology. This paper describes a model of 3-joint (4 links) fish robot type. Then we calculate the dynamic motion equation of this fish robot and use Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method to reduce the divergence of fish robot's motion when it operates in the underwater environment. And also, we analysis response characteristic of fish robot according to the parameters of input torque function and compare characteristic of fish robot with 3 joint and fish robot with 2 joint. Next, fish robot's maximum velocity is optimized by using the combination of Hill Climbing Algorithm (HCA) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). HCA is used to generate the good initial population for GA and then use GA is used to find the optimal parameters set that give maximum propulsion power in order to make fish robot swim at the fastest velocity.

  • A new algorithm is proposed to determine optimal accelerometer locations (OAL) when a structure is identified by frequency domain system identification (SI) method. As a result, a guideline is presented for selecting OAL which can reflect modal response of a structure properly. The guideline is to provide a minimum number of necessary accelerometers with the variation in the number of measurable target modes. To determine OAL for SI applications effectively, the modal sensitivity effective independence distribution vector (MS-EIDV) is developed with the likelihood function of measurements. By maximizing the likelihood of the occurrence of the measurements relative to the predictions, Fisher Information Matrix (FIM) is derived as a function of mode shape sensitivity. This paper also proposes a statistical approach in determining the structural parameters with a presumed parameter error which reflects the epistemic paradox between the determination of OAL and the application of a SI scheme. Numerical simulations have been carried out to examine the proposed OAL algorithm. A two-span multi-girder bridge and a two-span truss bridge were used for the simulation studies. To overcome a rank deficiency frequently occurred in inverting a FIM, the singular value decomposition scheme has been applied.

  • While SVD and Gaussian elimination method were applied to the additive damped least squares(DLS), the convergence and the stability of the optimization process were examined in a triplet-type camera lens-system where the condition number is well conditioned. DLS with SVD method generated a suitable merit function but this merit function may be trapped in a local minimum by the nonlinearity of error function. Therefore, the least camera lens-system was further designed by the global optimization method is grid method, and this method is adopted to get merit function that convergent to global minimum without local minimum trapping.

  • The spatial domain design of 2-dimensional separable denominator digital filters(SDDF) based on the reduced dimensional decomposition can be realized when the given 2-D impulse response specifications are decomposed into a pair of 1-D specifications via singular value decompositions(SVD). Because of use of the balaned approximation and equivalent transform as 1-D design algorithm, 2-D design algorithm retains the advantage that is numerically stable and can minimize quantization errors. In this paper in order to analyze and reduce these errors, minimum comfficient quantization realization is directly derived from impulse response specification. And using the equivalent trans form relation between mininum coefficient quantization error and minimum roundoff error realizations, we optimally realize a SDDF. This algorithm is analyzed by the simulation, which shows that it is superior to direct or balanced realization in quantization errors.

  • Augustine volcano is an active stratovolcano located southwest of Anchorage, Alaska. Augustine volcano experienced seven significantly explosive eruptions in 1812, 1883, 1908, 1935, 1963, 1976, and 1986, and a minor eruption in January 2006. To measure ground surface deformation of Augustine volcano, we applied satellite radar interferometry with ERS-1/2 and ENVISAT SAR images acquired from three descending and three ascending satellite tracks. Multiple interferograms are stacked to reduce artifacts due to changes in atmospheric condition and retrieve temporal deformation sequence. For this, we used Least Square (LS) method for reducing atmospheric effects and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method for the retrieval of a temporal deformation sequence. Interferograms before 2006 eruption show about 3 cm/year subsidence by contraction of pyroclastic flow deposits from the 1986 eruption. Interferograms during 2006 eruption do not show significant deformation around volcano crater. Interferograms after 2006 eruption show again a several cm subsidence by compaction and contraction of pyroclastic flow deposits for a few months. This study demonstrates that satellite radar interferometry can monitor deformation of Augustine volcano to help understand the magma plumbing system driving surface deformation.
