The focus of this paper is to develop a mathematical model for investigating the dynamic performance of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. The model in this work is based on physical laws having clear significance in replicating the fuel cell system and can easily be used to set up different operational strategies. Simulation results display the transient behavior of the voltage within each single cell, and also within a number of such single cells combined into a fuel cell stack system. A linear as well as a nonlinear analysis of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell system(PEMFC) has been discussed in order to present a complete and comprehensive view of this kind of modeling. Also, a comparison of the two kinds of analysis has been performed. Finally, the various characteristics of the fuel cell system are plotted in order to help us understand its dynamic behavior. Results indicate that there is a considerable amount of error in the modeling process if we use a linear model of the fuel cell. Thus, the nonlinearities present in the fuel cell system should be taken into account in order to obtain a better understanding of the dynamic behavior of the fuel cell system.

The interaction between the cell and the substrate is the most prominent feature affecting the migration of a crawling cell. This paper proposes a three-dimensional dynamic model using the diffuse interface description that reveals the effects of the interaction between a single crawling cell and the substrate during chemotactic migration. To illustrate the effects of interaction between the cell and the substrate, we consider the interfacial energy between the coexistent materials. Multiple mechanisms including the interface energy, chemotaxis effect, and diffusion, are addressed by employing a diffuse interface model.
In this study, we proposed a three-dimensional dynamic model under the diffuse interface description for the single crawling cell. From the developed model, we described the clear evolution processes for crawling neutrophil and assessed the reliable quantitative chemotactic property, which confirmed the high possibility of adequate predictions. To establish the system considering of multiple mechanisms such as, diffusion, chemotaxis, and interaction with surface, a diffuse interface model is employed.
In this study, we developed a whole cardiovascular system model combined with a Laplace heart based on the numerical cardiac cell model and a detailed arterial network structure. The present model incorporates the Laplace heart model and pulmonary model using the lumped parameter model with the distributed arterial system model. The Laplace heart plays a role of the pump consisted of the atrium and ventricle. We applied a cellular contraction model modulated by calcium concentration and action potential in the single cell. The numerical arterial model is based upon a numerical solution of the one-dimensional momentum equations and continuity equation of flow and vessel wall motion in a geometrically accurate branching network of the arterial system including energy losses at bifurcations. For validation of the present method, the computed pressure waves are compared with the existing experimental observations. Using the cell-system-arterial network combined model, the pathophysiological events from cells to arterial network are delineated.
This paper proposes the State-of-charge (SOC) estimator of a LiPB Battery using the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). EKF can work properly only with an accurate model. Therefore, the high accuracy electrical battery model for EKF state is discussed in this paper, which is focused on high-capacity LiPB batteries. The battery model is extracted from a single cell of LiPB 40Ah, 3.7V. The dynamic behavior of single cell battery is modeled using a bulk capacitance, two series RC networks, and a series resistance. The bulk capacitance voltage represents the Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) of battery and other components represent the transient response of battery voltage. The experimental results show the strong relationship between OCV and SOC without any dependency on the current rates. Therefore, EKF is proposed to work by estimating OCV, and then is converted it to SOC. EKF is tested with the experimental data. To increase the estimation accuracy, EKF is improved with a single dominant varying parameter of bulk capacitance which follows the SOC value. Full region of SOC test is done to verify the effectiveness of EKF algorithm. The test results show the error of estimation can be reduced up to max 5%SOC.
Subsequently, Part I [1], which was about the single-cell model, a composite thin-walled beam with a multi-cell of chord-wise asymmetric cross-section, was selected in this study. Moreover, the theoretical dynamic characteristics of the model were analyzed. For this analysis, mathematical modeling was performed by considering the warping restraint effects, transverse shear effects, taper ratio and cross-section ratio. Similar to part I, the mass, stiffness coefficients and Eigen frequencies of the multi-cell section considered were investigated. In particular, the comparison between the multi-cell and single-cell sections and the effects of the cross-section ratio and taper ratio of the model on the Eigen frequencies were analyzed. However, the results compared when the asymmetry of the section was considered and warping function were not corrected.

In this paper, we analyzed the other-cell interference characteristics for various non-uniform traffic distributions and their effects on the capacity of multi-cell CDMA system. We consider three different traffic distributions, i.e., linear, exponential and Gaussian traffic distribution with distribution parameters. Changing the distribution parameter, we can obtain the center-focused distributions or uniform distributions for each model. From the results of other-cell interference calculation we can see that the other-cell interference decreases, as the user concentrates on the base station. Also using frequency reuse efficiency indicating the capacity reduction of a multi-cell system when compared to a single cell system, we evaluate the effect of traffic distribution on the reverse link CDMA capacity. For linear case, the capacity of multi-cell system is reduced to 0.637∼0.867 times that of single cell system. On the other hand, for both exponential and Gaussian cases, the capacity under a multi-cell environment is equal to 70∼100% of that under a single cell. Therefore, we conclude that the average capacity of multi-cell CDMA system are increased when users are likely to be at near the cell base station due to reduced total other-cell interference and decreased when users exist at near the cell edge regardless of traffic distribution models.
The activity of immobilized cell-support particle aggregates is influenced by physical and biochemical elements, mass transfer, and physiology. Accordingly, the mathematical model discussed in this study is capable of predicting the steady state and transient concentration profiles of the cell mass and substrate, plus the effects of the substrate and product inhibition in an immobilized cell-support aggregate. The overall mathematical model is comprised of material balance equations for the cell mass, major carbon source, dissolved oxygen, and non-biomass products in a bulk suspension along with a single particle model. A smaller bead size and higher substrate concentration at the surface of the particle, resulted in a higher supply of the substrate into the aggregate and consequently a higher biocatalyst activity.
In the present study, a mechanical model is applied to account the effects of the surrounding viscoelastic media on the buckling behavior of single microfilament within the cell. The model immeasurably associates filament's bending rigidity, neighboring system elasticity, and cytosol viscosity with buckling wavelengths, buckling growth rates and buckling amplitudes of the filament. Cytoskeleton components in living cell bear large compressive force and are responsible in maintaining the cell shape. Actually these filaments are surrounded by viscoelastic media consisting of other filaments network and viscous cytosole within the cell. This surrounding, viscoelastic media affects the buckling behavior of these filaments when external force is applied on these filaments. The obtained results, indicate that the coupling of viscoelastic media with the viscous cytosol greatly affect the buckling behavior of microfilament. The buckling forces increased with the increase in the intensity of surrounding viscoelastic media.
CTLA-4Ig is regarded as an inhibitory agent of the T cell proliferation via blocking the costimulatory signal which is essential for full T cell activation. To improve applicability, we developed the CTLA-4Ig-CTKC in which the c-terminal lysine had been replaced by cysteine through single amino acid change. The single amino acid mutation of c-terminus of CTLA-4Ig was performed by PCR and was checked by in vitro transcription and translation. DNA construct of mutant form was transfected to Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells by electroporation. The purified proteins were confirmed by Western blot and B7-1 binding assay for their binding ability. The suppressive capacity of CTLA-4Ig-CTKC was evaluated by the mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) and in the allogeneic pancreatic islet transplantation model. CTLA-4Ig-CTKC maintained binding ability to B7-1 molecule and effectively inhibits T cell proliferation in MLR. In the murine allogeneic pancreatic islet transplantation, short-term treatment of CTLA-4Ig-CTKC prolonged the graft survival over 100 days. CTLA-4Ig-CTKC effectively inhibits immune response both in MLR and in allogeneic islet transplantation model, indicating that single amino acid mutation does not affect the inhibitory function of CTLA-4Ig. CTLA-4Ig-CTKC can be used in vehicle-mediated drug delivery system such as liposome conjugation.
