  • Using survey data collected from 275 adolescent children of widowed or divorced single mother families, this study investigated the characteristics of family coping resources, including individual, financial, social, and mother-child relational resources and their effects on the psychological wellbeing of these adolescents. After controlling background variables of the family, higher depression among adolescents was associated with low grade point average, mother's high exposure to negative experiences after loss of father, low attachment to mother, and low sense of self-control. Furthermore, higher grade point average, strong attachment to mother, and high self-control in problem solving were factors predicting higher self-esteem of adolescents. Social network resources were not related to the psychological well-being of the adolescents. Discussion included recommendations for future research. Implications for policy and parent-child relations were discussed with a view to enhancing family functioning of adolescents in single-mother families.

  • Andaok, a new single cross variety, is a yellow dent maize hybrid (Zea mays L.) developed by the maize breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2011. This hybrid, which has a high yield of grain, was produced by crossing two inbred lines, KS161 and KS162. KS161 is the seed parent and KS162 is the pollen parent of Andaok. Silking date of Andaok is 3 days later than that of the check hybrid, Jangdaok. Plant height of Andaok is longer than that of Jangdaok. Ear numbers per 100 plants of Andaok is more than that of Jangdaok. Ear length of Andaok is shorter than that of Jangdaok. The weight of 100 seeds of Andaok is heavier than that of Jangdaok. It has moderate resistance to southern corn leaf blight (Bipolaris maydis), black streaked dwarf virus (BSDV) and corn borer. It has strong resistance to northern corn leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum). It has resistance to lodging. Andaok was evaluated for its yield of grain at three locations from 2009 to 2011. The grain yield of Andaok was 7.80 ton/ha. Seed production of Andaok has gone well due to a good match during crossing between the seed parent, KS161, and the pollen parent, KS162, in Yeongwol.

  • A single cross, Pyeonganok, is an yellow flint-like maize hybrid (Zea mays L.) developed by the maize breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2008. This hybrid, which has a high yield of dry matter was produced by crossing two inbred lines, KS140 and KS94. KS140 is the seed parent and KS94 is the pollen parent of Pyeonganok. Silking date of Pyeonganok is 3 days later than that of check hybrid, Kwangpyeongok. Stay-green of Pyeonganok is not greatly different with that of Kwangpyeongok. It has resistance to lodging. It has moderately resistance to Bipolaris maydis (southern corn leaf blight), Exserohilum turcicum (northern corn leaf blight), and corn borer but sensitivity to black streaked dwarf virus (BSDV). Pyeonganok was evaluated for the yields of dry matter at four locations from 2006 to 2008. The yields of Pyeonganok in dry matter was 20.84 ton/ha. Seed production of Pyeonganok has gone well due to a good match during crossing between the seed parent, KS140 and the pollen parent, KS94 in Yeongwol.

  • Purpose: This study was a grounded theory research aimed at generating a substantive theory that accounts for the explanatory social processes in which immigrant Korean single-mother families were engaged in the United States. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with 15 immigrant Korean single mothers who were living with children under 18 years of age at the time of the interviews. Data collection guided by theoretical sampling and concurrent constant comparative analysis of the transcribed data was conducted to identify the core social process. Results: The emerged core social process was "living for the children," which represented the driving process by which these women made transition to their new lives as single-mother families. The major task throughout the entire transition was re-creating their families. The women's transition involved practical and psychological transitions. The practical transition involved three stages: assuring family survival, struggling between the father role and the mother role, and stabilizing. The psychological transition involved becoming strong and settling in with a new supportive network. Conclusion: Study results added to the literature by elaborating the women's emphasis on maternal identity and the resilience-provoking nature of the women's transitions.

  • Stent thrombosis is a major limitation of stent-assisted coiling, which is an effective method for treating wide-necked aneurysms. Although early in-stent thrombosis has been reported, very late stent thrombosis (VLST) (>1 year) has not been reported following implantation of a single self-expandable stent designed for coiling. Herein, the authors present a case of VLST that occurred 14 months after single stent implantation in a large paraclinoid aneurysm with an ultra-wide neck involving the parent artery circumferentially. This case indicates the need for establishing guidelines regarding the optimal duration of prophylactic antiplatelet therapy following stent-assisted coiling, which remains undefined in the neuroendovascular field.

  • In this study, a survey was carried out on 200 23-year old unmarried men and women attending j university in j city from October 4 to October 7, 2011 to figure out pre-parents' perception of parental role and view of children, and put forward the necessity of pre-parent education by providing opportunities for pre-parent education. The results are summarized as follows. First, the perception of general parenting and parental role showed that 'parenting' is the highest, following by 'parental role'. For women, nuclear families and large families, who feel much necessity of pre-parent education in the academic liberal arts, the perception of general parenting, parental role and parenting by sub-factors was positive. Second, the perception of general view of children showed that 'children plan' is the highest, followed by 'pregnancy and birth.' For those surveyed, who have a plan for marriage and children plan or feel much necessity of pre-parent education in the academic liberal arts, the perception of general view of children, children plan by sub-factors, and pregnancy and birth was relatively positive. As for findings stated above, for pre-parents in their 20s~30s, women' perception of parental role and view of children was more positive than men'. And nuclear families' or large families' perception was more positive than single parent families'. These findings confirm there is a difference between parental role and view of children according to growth environments of pre-parents in social realities that the low birth rate is growing.
