Comparison on genomic prediction using pedigree BLUP and single step GBLUP through the Hanwoo full-sib family

  • Objective: When evaluating individuals with the same parent and no phenotype by pedigree best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP), it is difficult to explain carcass grade difference and select individuals because they have the same value in pedigree BLUP (PBLUP). However, single step GBLUP (ssGBLUP), which can estimate the breeding value suitable for the individual by adding genotype, is more accurate than the existing method. Methods: The breeding value and accuracy were estimated with pedigree BLUP and ssGBLUP using pedigree and genotype of 408 Hanwoo cattle from 16 families with the same parent among siblings produced by fertilized egg transplantation. A total of 14,225 Hanwoo cattle with pedigree, genotype and phenotype were used as the reference population. PBLUP obtained estimated breeding value (EBV) using the pedigree of the test and reference populations, and ssGBLUP obtained genomic EBV (GEBV) after constructing and H-matrix by integrating the pedigree and genotype of the test and reference populations. Results: For all traits, the accuracy of GEBV using ssGBLUP is 0.18 to 0.20 higher than the accuracy of EBV obtained with PBLUP. Comparison of EBV and GEBV of individuals without phenotype, since the value of EBV is estimated based on expected values of alleles passed down from common ancestors. It does not take Mendelian sampling into consideration, so the EBV of all individuals within the same family is estimated to be the same value. However, GEBV makes estimating true kinship coefficient based on different genotypes of individuals possible, so GEBV that corresponds to each individual is estimated rather than a uniform GEBV for each individual. Conclusion: Since Hanwoo cows bred through embryo transfer have a high possibility of having the same parent, if ssGBLUP after adding genotype is used, estimating true kinship coefficient corresponding to each individual becomes possible, allowing for more accurate estimation of breeding value.

Hydrogenation of Phenylacetylene to Styrene on Pre-CxHy- and C-Covered Cu(111) Single Crystal Catalysts

  • Thermal hydrogenation of phenylacetylene (PA, $C_8H_6$) to styrene ($C_8H_8$) on pre-$C_xH_y$- and C-covered Cu(111) single crystal substrates has been studied using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) mass spectrometry. Chemisorbed PA with an acetylene group has been proved to be associated with hydrogen of pre-adsorbed $C_xH_y$ to form styrene (104 amu) on Cu surface. For the parent (PA) mass (102 amu) TPD profile, the TPD peaks at 360 K and 410 K are assigned to chemisorbed vertically aligned PA and flat-lying cross-bridged PA, respectively (J. Phys. Chem. C 2007, 111, 5101). The relative $I_{360K}/I_{410K}$ TPD ratio dramatically increases with increasing pre-adsorbed $C_xH_y$ before dosing PA, while the ratio does not increase for pre-C-covered surface. For PA on pre-$C_xH_y$-covered Cu(111) surface, styrene desorption is enhanced relative to the parent PA desorption, while styrene formation is dramatically quenched on pre-C-covered (lack of adsorbed hydrogen nearby) surface. It appears that only cross-bridged PA associates with adsorbed hydrogen to form styrene that promptly desorbs at 410 K, while vertically aligned PA is less likely to participate in forming styrene.

가구 유형별 청소년의 아침식사 행태 분석 (Study on Skipping Breakfast in Adolescents Classified by Household Type)

  • This study investigated the situation of eating meals to identify factors influencing skipping breakfast and types of foods consumed for breakfast among adolescents classified by household type. Adolescents were found to consume mainly homemade meals for breakfast and dinner while consuming institutional foodservice at school for lunch. Percentage of skipping meals among adolescents was different by time of meals, and they skipped meals due to lack of time, which was different according to household type. Main food for breakfast was rice, and percentage of skipping breakfast was the highest in single parent households. Satisfaction of food-related life was lowest in grandparent households. Especially, satisfaction was highest if they had rice for breakfast. For influencing factors on skipping breakfast, social support, eating regularly, concern for origin, and single parent household were found to be significant. For influencing factors on types of foods consumed for breakfast, eating regularly, exercise, satisfaction of food-related life, and concern for food safety among adolescents were found to be significant. If adolescents in grandparent households had rice, they were less likely to skip breakfast.

전북지방 닭의 내부기생충 감염상황 (Prevalence of parasite infection of chickens in Jeonbuk province)

  • In order to detection of the intestinal parasites, fecal samples were taken from broiler (n=290), parent stock (n=168) and laying hen (n=114) in Jeonbuk province. The prevalence and identification of intestinal parasites were determined by the fecal examination using the floatation method and microscopical examination, respectively. The detection rate of parasite-eggs from 3 flocks (total=572) was 44.9%. In the breed and type of breeding, infection rate of parasite-eggs was detected 65.5% as broiler (floor breeding, 290 chickens), 20.2% as parent stock (floor breeding, 168 chickens) and 28.9% as laying hen (cage breeding, 114 chickens), in order. In the concern of mixed infection such as single and double, the rate were 40.7% and 4.2%, respectively. Six kinds of infective eggs were isolated 257 fecal sample from 3 flock. They were classified 74.7% as Eimeria spp, 18.1% as Ascaridia galli and 6.0% as Capillaria spp and 0.4% as Heteratkis gallinarum, Railleina spp or Trichostrongylus spp, single or in combination.

  • While we go through a rapid change in society, family types composing social relationship underwent lots of changes. Recently the range of family is included not only families on the basis of blood relationship but also single family, a one-parent family and non-blood relationship family. Now we need not unified types of housing but social integrated housing models responding to family diversity. The purpose of this study is that examine family diversity through social statistics and demography and grasp the current housing types responding to family diversity. The features of family diversity are reducing the number of family member and turning up a unformal family type. At the social statistics and demography in 2005, the number of family member is only 2.9 people per family. Due to decline of birth rate and change of marriage consciousness, various family types appear and increase such as single family, a one-parent family and non-blood relationship family. But there is lack of housing types responding to such family diversity. This study will be a basic research to develop social integrated housing models responding to family diversity. Housing must be sensitive to change of family type, so it responds our needs based on thorough understanding on various housing life.

전북지방 닭의 기생충 감염상황 (Prevalence of Parasite Infection of Fowls in Chonbuk Province)

  • In order to detection of the intestinal parasites, fecal samples were taken from broiler (n=262), laying hen(n=244), parent stock(n=207) and native stock(n=287) in Chonbuk province. The prevalence and identification of intestinal parasites were determined by the fecal examination using the floatation and /or sedimentation methods and microscopical examination, respectively. The results were obtained as follows : 1. The detection rate of parasite-eggs from 4 flocks(total=1,000) was 65.7%. 2. In the breed and type of breeding, infection rate of parasite-eggs was detected 84.0% as native stock (floor breeding, 241 chicken), 79.7% as parent stock (floor breeding, 165 chickens), 73.3% as broiler(floor breeding, 192 chicken) and 24.2% as laying hen(cage breeding, 59 chicken), in order. 3. In the concern of mixed infection such as single, double and triple, the rate was 55.1%, 8.7% and 1.9%, respectively. 4. Ten kinds of infective eggs were isolated from 657 fecal sample of 4 flock. They were classified 51.l% as Eimeria spp., 12.7% as Ascaridia galli, 5.1% as Capillaria spp., 4.1% as Strongyloides avium, 2.3% as Heterakis gallinarum, 0.5% as Hymenolepis spp., 0.3% as Railleina spp. and 0.2% as Syngamus spp., Trichostrongilus spp., or Choanoteania spp., single or in combination.

Pharmacokinetics of ginsenoside Rb1 and its metabolite compound K after oral administration of Korean Red Ginseng extract

  • Compound K is a major metabolite of ginsenoside Rb1, which has various pharmacological activities in vivo and in vitro. However, previous studies have focused on the pharmacokinetics of a single metabolite or the parent compound and have not described the pharmacokinetics of both compounds in humans. To investigate the pharmacokinetics of ginsenoside Rb1 and compound K, we performed an open-label, single-oral dose pharmacokinetic study using Korean Red Ginseng extract. We enrolled 10 healthy Korean male volunteers in this study. Serial blood samples were collected during 36 h after Korean Red Ginseng extract administration to determine plasma concentrations of ginsenoside Rb1 and compound K. The mean maximum plasma concentration of compound K was $8.35{\pm}3.19$ ng/mL, which was significantly higher than that of ginsenoside Rb1 ($3.94{\pm}1.97$ ng/mL). The half-life of compound K was 7 times shorter than that of ginsenoside Rb1. These results suggest that the pharmacokinetics, especially absorption, of compound K are not influenced by the pharmacokinetics of its parent compound, except the time to reach the maximum plasma concentration The delayed absorption of compound K support the evidence that the intestinal microflora play an important role in the transformation of ginsenoside Rb1 to compound K.

A New White Waxy Corn 'Daedukchal 1' Hybrid with High Yield and High Table Quality

  • A new waxy corn hybrid 'Daedukchal 1' was developed from single cross between CNU 504 and CNU 2396 at Chungnam National University in 2007. Inbred CNU 504 used as a seed parent and inbred CNU 2396 as a pollen parent were collected throughout domestic regions. Tasseling date of this hybrid was seven days later than that of check hybrid, 'Chalok 1'. 'Daedukchal 1' was 19.7 cm in ear length and 4.5 cm in ear diameter. On yield trial, ear length of this hybrid was increased 29.7% compared with a check hybrid, 'Chalok 1'. 'Daedukchal 1' had white kernels and good eating quality due to high sugar content and thinner pericarp. The ratio of kernel set length/ear length was similar to 'Chalok 1'. It is moderately resistant to southern leaf blight and northern leaf blight but susceptible to corn borer. The yields of 'Daedukchal 1' in fresh ear weight and in number of fresh ear were 16% and 8%, respectively, higher than those of a check hybrid in regional yield trials for two years. Seed production for this hybrid was better because of the consistency of tasseling dates.

노인의 성공적 노후 영향요인 분석 : 가구유형별 집단비교 (Analysis on the Factors Influencing Elderly's Successful Aging: Group Comparison by Household Types)

  • 본 논문은 1인가구, 부부가구, 부부와 자녀로 이루어진 가구 노인들의 성공적 노후 수준을 확인하고, 각 가구유형별로 성공적 노후에 영향을 미치는 요인이 무엇인가를 집단별로 비교, 분석하여 노인들의 성공적 노후를 위한 정책 및 프로그램 개발의 기초자료로 활용함에 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 국민노후보장패널조사 제4차 개인용 조사와 부가조사 자료를 활용하였으며, 1인가구 699명, 부부가구 1,412명, 부부와 자녀로 구성된 가구 238명이 분석에 활용되었다. 분석 결과, 성공적 노후 수준은 1인가구가 부부가구와 부부와 자녀로 구성된 가구에 비해 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 성공적 노후에 영향을 미치는 요인을 파악하기 위해 다중회귀분석하여 비교한 결과, 1인가구의 경우 경제활동, 경제적 독립, 집안일, 이웃관계, 가족관계, 자녀관계가 통계적으로 유의하였다. 부부가구의 경우 경제적 독립, 신체적 건강, 친구관계, 자녀관계가 성공적 노후에 유의한 영향력을 보였다. 마지막으로 부부와 자녀가구는 신체적 건강과 친구관계가 성공적 노후에 유의한 요인으로 확인되었다.

Inheritance of Resistance to Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus in Silkworm, Bombyx mori

  • Inheritance pattern of resistance to Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus (BmNPV) was studied in an Indian silkworm stock TX by single back-cross test method. The resistant parent [TX], susceptible parent [HM], their Fl, F2, and Fl progeny back-crossed to TX [BC(R)] and HM [BC(S)] were inoculated per os with a fixed concentration of BmNPV($0.5{\times}10^{th} PIB/ml$) on the first day of second stadium. The cumulative mortality was recorded until day $10^{\times}$ post-inoculation. The results show that the resistance to BmNPV in TX fellow mono Mendelian inheritance pattern. The resistance dominated over the susceptibility at Fl. At F2, the resistant and susceptible offspring segregated in 3:1 ratio whereas at BC(S), the resistant and susceptible offspring segregated in 1:1 ratio. The response of BC(R) was more or less like the resistant parent TX which confirms the involvement of a major dominant gene conferring resistance to BmNPV in TX. The possible mechanism of inheritance of resistance in TX is discussed.
