Energy dissipation demand of compression members in concentrically braced frames

  • The response of single story buildings and other case studies are investigated to observe trends in response and to develop a better understanding of the impact of some design parameters on the seismic response of CBF. While it is recognized that many parameters have an influence on the behavior of braced frames, the focus of this study is mostly on quantifying energy dissipation in compression and its effectiveness on seismic performance. Based on dynamic analyses of single story braced frame and case studies, it is found that a bracing member designed with bigger R and larger KL/r results in lower normalized cumulative energy, i.e., cumulative compressive energy normalized by the corresponding tensile energy (${\sum}E_C/E_T$), in both cases.

  • In this paper, in order to improve the withstand voltage properties of epoxy resin, IPN(interpenetrating polymer network) method was introduced and the influence was investigated. The single network structure specimen(E series), simultaneous interpenetrating polymer network specimen(EM series) and pseudo interpenetrating polymer network(EMP series) specimen were manufactured. In order to understand the internal structure properties, scanning electron microscopy method was utilized, and glass transition temperature was measured. Also, AC voltage dielectric breakdown strength, tensile strength and impact strength were measured to investigate the influence upon electrical and mechanical properties. As a result, it was confirmed that simultaneous interpenetrating polymer network specimen was the most execellent.

Achievable Rate Region Bounds and Resource Allocation for Wireless Powered Two Way Relay Networks

  • This paper investigates the wireless powered two way relay network (WPTWRN), where two single-antenna users and one single-antenna relay firstly harvest energy from signals emitted by a multi-antenna power beacon (PB) and then two users exchange information with the help of the relay by using their harvested energies. In order to improve the energy transfer efficiency, energy beamforming at the PB is deployed. For such a network, to explore the performance limit of the presented WPTWRN, an optimization problem is formulated to obtain the achievable rate region bounds by jointly optimizing the time allocation and energy beamforming design. As the optimization problem is non-convex, it is first transformed to be a convex problem by using variable substitutions and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and then solve it efficiently. It is proved that the proposed method achieves the global optimum. Simulation results show that the achievable rate region of the presented WPTWRN architecture outperforms that of wireless powered one way relay network architecture. Results also show that the relay location has significant impact on achievable rate region of the WPTWRN.

Buckling behavior of composite cylindrical shells with cutout considering geometric imperfection

  • Creating different cutout shapes in order to make doors and windows, reduce the structural weight or implement various mechanisms increases the likelihood of buckling in thin-walled structures. In this study, the effect of cutout shape and geometric imperfection (GI) is simultaneously investigated on the critical buckling load and knock-down factor (KDF) of composite cylindrical shells. The GI is modeled using single perturbation load approach (SPLA). First, in order to assess the finite element model, the critical buckling load of a composite shell without cutout obtained by SPLA is compared with the experimental results available in the literature. Then, the effect of different shapes of cutout such as circular, elliptic and square, and perturbation load imperfection (PLI) is investigated on the buckling behavior of cylindrical shells. Results show that the critical buckling load of a shell without cutout decreases by increasing the PLI, whereas increasing the PLI does not have a great impact on the critical buckling load in the presence of cutout imperfection. Increasing the cutout area reduces the effect of the PLI, which results in an increase in the KDF.

  • Recently, vibrational signal processing as a tool of machinery diagnosis has been actively studying. In this study, a new scheme for detection and diagnosis of localized defects in ball bearings, using unwrapped phase spectrum of FFT is described. The characteristic phase spectra for such defects shows linearly varying patterns due to the repetitive impact signals generated by localized defects, i.e., one linear line for single defect and various linearly changing shape according to angle between the two defect located points. The effectiveness of this method is confirmed by computer simulation and experiments on bearing with single or double defects at different locations.

Experimental validation of dynamic based damage locating indices in RC structures

  • This paper presents experimental modal analysis and static load testing results to validate the accuracy of dynamic parameters-based damage locating indices in RC structures. The study investigates the accuracy of different dynamic-based damage locating indices compared to observed crack patterns from static load tests and how different damage levels and scenarios impact them. The damage locating indices based on mode shape curvature and mode shape fourth derivate in their original forms were found to show anomalies along the beam length and at the supports. The modified forms of these indices show higher sensitivity in locating single and multi-cracks at different damage scenarios. The proposed stiffness reduction index shows good sensitivity in detecting single and multi-cracks. The proposed anomalies elimination procedure helps to remove the anomalies along the beam length. Also, the adoption of the proposed weighting method averaging procedure and normalization procedure help to draw the overall crack pattern based on the adopted set of modes.

  • Haze is a very common phenomenon that degrades or reduces the visibility. It causes various problems where high quality images are required such as traffic and security monitoring. So haze removal from images receives great attention for clear vision. Due to its huge impact, significant advances have been achieved but the task yet remains a challenging one. Recently, different types of deep generative adversarial networks (GAN) are applied to suppress the noise and improve the dehazing performance. But it is unclear how these algorithms would perform on hazy images acquired "in the wild" and how we could gauge the progress in the field. This paper aims to bridge this gap. We present a comprehensive study and experimental evaluation on diverse GAN models in single image dehazing through benchmark datasets.

원심모형실험을 통한 차량방호울타리 지지말뚝의 수평방향 충격하중에 대한 극한지지력 (Ultimate Capacity of Guardrail Supporting Pile Subjected to Lateral Impact Load Using Centrifuge Model Test)

  • 차량이 도로를 이탈하여 성토부로 추락하는 것을 방지하기 위해 설치되는 연성 차량방호울타리는 사면부 시작점 근처에 도로방향으로 일렬로 근입된 무리말뚝과 무리말뚝 위에 부착되는 가드레일로 구성되어 있다. 차량방호울타리에 차량 충돌 시, 충돌에너지의 일부는 가드레일의 변형에 의해 흡수되며, 나머지 에너지는 가드레일을 지지하는 말뚝과 지반의 상호작용으로 저항하게 된다. 본 논문에서는 충격하중에 대한 말뚝과 지반의 상호작용을 원심모형실험을 수행하여 분석하였다. 풍화토로 다져진 경사지반에 설치된 단말뚝의 충격하중에 대한 극한지지력 및 거동특성을 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 말뚝에 충격하중을 모사할 수 있는 하중재하시스템을 설계 및 구축하였다. 구축된 원심모형실험체 및 하중재하시스템을 이용하여 하중 및 지반조건에 대한 매개변수연구를 수행하였다. 최종적으로, 말뚝의 하중재하점에서 나타나는 하중-변위 곡선을 계측하여 충격극한지지력을 분석하였다. 또한, 휨모멘트 분포도로부터 산정된 지반반력 분포도를 도출하였고, 선행 연구결과와 비교하여 차량 방호울타리 지지말뚝의 지지거동을 분석하였다.

I-fiber 스티칭 공법이 적용된 Single-lap Joint의 강도 특성 및 파손 신호 검출 연구 (A Study on the Strength Characteristics and Failure Detection of Single-lap Joints with I-fiber Stitching Method)

  • 적층 복합재의 특성상 두께 방향 물성이 취약하여 비틀림, 저속충격, 피로 하중 등 복합 하중을 받게 되면 재료 내부의 미세크랙 진전을 통해 층간분리 현상이 발생하게 된다. 이를 방지하고자 Z-pinning, Stitching 등 다양한 3차원 보강 공법과 구조물의 미세균열을 실시간으로 검출하는 구조 건전성 감시 기법이 꾸준히 연구되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 I-fiber 스티칭 공법으로 보강된 Single-lap joint를 Co-curing 방법으로 제작하였으며, 제작된 시편의 강도 및 파손신호 검출 특성을 평가하였다. 균열과 파손신호 검출을 위하여 전기저항법과 AE법을 사용하였으며, 신호분석을 위한 전용회로를 제작하여 인장시험 중의 파손신호를 분석하였다. 실험결과, I-fiber 스티칭으로 보강된 Single-lap joint 시편은 보강이 없는 Co-cured single-lap joint 시편에 비해 강도가 약 44.6% 향상되었다. 또한, I-fiber로 보강된 Single-lap joint 시편은 강도 향상과 더불어 전기저항법과 AE법에 의한 파손 검출이 모두 가능하므로 파손 모니터링에도 효과적인 구조임을 확인하였다.
