  • We describe the radiative transfer of a Gaussian beam in a water medium using the Monte Carlo method offering basic propagation behaviors. The simulation shows how the energy of the initial Gaussian beam is redistributed as it propagates in coastal water, and also depicts the dependence of the propagation behavior on inherent optical properties of the ocean water such as the single scattering albedo as well as on laser beam parameters, e.g. the M squared. Our results may widen the applicability of LIDARs by providing a couple of design considerations for a bathymetric LIDAR.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a method by using virtual simulation to calculate the behaviors of spacers to avoid conductor galloping with the hanging composite polymer spacer between conductors on different phases. We have considered with three types of modeling considerations for the analysis of galloping in power transmission lines, such as iced-single conductors without spacer, iced-single conductors with spacers, and iced-two bundle conductors with spacers. In simulation, the finite element method is used to calculate the structural response with geometric nonlinear behavior. The iced conductor is modeled by two beam-element faces with which it is connected. The ANSYS program is applied too. First, the calculation results show that the two beam-element model is very suitable to make a virtual simulation. Second, the amplitude of conductor galloping is reduced after hanged spacers. Third, when number of spacer is increased, the maximum magnitude of natural frequency of iced conductor will reduce. Final, the behaviors of spacers are verified in viewpoint of standard cases.

  • The third order nonlinear optical susceptibilities, {{{{ chi }}(3), of the CuCl doped alumino-borosilicate glasses were measured by the two beam configuration DFWM method and the absorption saturation method, and the measured {{{{ chi }}(3) values were about 10-8 esu in both methods. The response time was estimated to be about 105ps from the time decay curve of the luminescence spectra obtained by time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) method.

  • Microtubules (MTs) are the main part of the cytoskeleton in living eukaryotic cells. In this article, a mechanical model of MT buckling, considering the modified strain gradient theory, is analytically examined. The MT is assumed as a cylindrical beam and a new single variable trigonometric beam theory is developed in conjunction with a modified strain gradient model. The main benefit of the present formulation is shown in its new kinematic where we found only one unknown as the Euler-Bernoulli beam model, which is even less than the Timoshenko beam model. The governing equations are deduced by considering virtual work principle. The effectiveness of the present method is checked by comparing the obtained results with those reported by other higher shear deformation beam theory involving a higher number of unknowns. It is shown that microstructure-dependent response is more important when material length scale parameters are closer to the outer diameter of MTs. Also, it can be confirmed that influences of shear deformation become more considerable for smaller shear modulus and aspect ratios.

  • The aim of this study is to calculate natural frequencies and harmonic responses of cracked frames with general boundary conditions by using transfer matrix method (TMM). The TMM is a straightforward technique to obtain harmonic responses and natural frequencies of frame structures as the method is based on constructing a relationship between state vectors of two ends of structure by a chain multiplication procedure. A single variable shear deformation theory (SVSDT) is applied, as well as, Timoshenko beam theory (TBT) and Euler-Bernoulli beam theory (EBT) for comparison purposes. Firstly, free vibration analysis of intact and cracked frames are performed for different crack ratios using TMM. The crack is modelled by means of a linear rotational spring that divides frame members into segments. The results are verified by experimental data and finite element method (FEM) solutions. The harmonic response curves that represent resonant and anti-resonant frequencies directly are plotted for various crack lengths. It is seen that the TMM can be used effectively for harmonic response analysis of cracked frames as well as natural frequencies calculation. The results imply that the SVSDT is an efficient alternative for investigation of cracked frame vibrations especially with thick frame members. Moreover, EBT results can easily be obtained by ignoring shear deformation related terms from governing equation of motion of SVSDT.

  • In this study, a wavelet packet based method is proposed for identifying damage occurrence and damage location for beam-like structures. This method assumes that the displacement or the acceleration response time histories at various locations along a beam-like structure both before and after damage are available for damage assessment. These responses are processed through a proper level of wavelet packet decomposition. The wavelet packet signature (WPS) that consists of wavelet packet component signal energies is calculated. The change of the WPS curvature between the baseline state and the current state is then used to identify the locations of possible damage in the structure. Two numerical studies, one on a 15-storey shear-beam building frame and another on a simply-supported steel beam, and an experimental study on a simply-supported reinforced concrete beam are performed to validate the proposed method. Results show the WPS curvature change can be used to locate both single and sparsely-distributed multiple damages that exist in the structure. Also the accuracy of assessment does not seem to be affected by the presence of 20-15dB measurement noise. One advantage of the proposed method is that it does not require any mathematical model for the structure being monitored and hence can potentially be used for practical application.

  • In this paper, vibration suppression of an elastic beam fixed on a moving cart and carrying a fixed or moving mass is considered. A modified pulse sequence method with RIC(Robust Internal-loop Compensator) is proposed to suppress the single model residual vibration and to get accurate positioning of the beam-mass-cart system. The performance of the proposed input preshaping method is compared with that of the previous ones through simulations and experiments. Using the proposed method, it is able to suppress the initial vibration of the beam-mass-cart system carrying a concentrated mass. Accurate PTP(point-to-point) positioning of the moving mass without residual vibration is also obtained experimentally by modifying the proposed pulse sequence method. Finally, the proposed input preshaping method is applied successfully to the system to follow square trajectories of the moving mass without residual vibration.

  • The static and dynamic analyses of simply supported beams are studied by using the U-transformation method and the finite difference method. When the beam is divided into the mesh of equal elements, the mesh may be treated as a periodic structure. After an equivalent cyclic periodic system is established, the difference governing equation for such an equivalent system can be uncoupled by applying the U-transformation. Therefore, a set of single-degree-of-freedom equations is formed. These equations can be used to obtain exact analytical solutions of the deflections, bending moments, buckling loads, natural frequencies and dynamic responses of the beam subjected to particular loads or excitations. When the number of elements approaches to infinity, the exact error expression and the exact convergence rates of the difference solutions are obtained. These exact results cannot be easily derived if other methods are used instead.

  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) has commonly been used to strengthen existing RC structures. Wrapping the whole component with CFRP is an effective method and simple to execute. Besides, specific configuration of CFRP sheets (L, X and T shape) has also been considered in some experiments to examine CFRP effects in advance. This study aimed to provide an optimal CFRP configuration to effectively retrofit the beam-column connection using continuous material topology optimization procedure. In addition, Moved and Regularized Heaviside Functions and penalization factors were also considered. Furthermore, a multi-material procedure was also used to compare with the results from the single material procedure.

  • This research is concerned with the validation of the modeling technique and controller design for slewing beam structures. When cantilever beam rotates about axes perpendicular to the undeformed beam's longitudinal axis, it experiences inertial loading. Hence, the beam vibrates from the initial stage of slewing. In this paper, the analytical model for a single slewing flexible beam with surface bonded piezoelectric sensor and actuator is developed using the Hamilton's principle with discretization by the assumed mode method. Comparisons with the theoretical model are made based upon the frequency responses and time responses. A new factor called the coupling coefficient is introduced to incorporate the discrepancies between the theoretical and experimental results. The slewing is achieved by applying the PID control, which is found to be less sensitive to vibrations. The vibrations are controlled by PPF controller, which is found to be effective in suppressing residual vibrations after slewing. The vibrations occurred during slewing is difficult to control because the piezoceramic actuator is not powerful enough to overcome inertial loadings.
