This study describes the effect of ground water table on the dynamic analysis of single piles subjected to earthquake loading. The dynamic numerical analysis was performed for different dry and saturated soils with varying the relative densities of surrounding weathered soils (SM). The test soil was a weathered soil encountered in the engineering field and bender element tests were conducted to estimate the dynamic properties of test soil. The Mohr-Coulomb model and Finn model were used for soil, dry and saturated conditions, respectively. These models validated with results of centrifuge tests. When compared with the results from the soil conditions, saturated cases showed more lateral displacement and bending moment of piles than dry cases, and this difference caused from the generation of excess porewater pressure. It means that the kinematic effect of the soil decreased as the excess pore water pressure was generated, and it was changed to the inertial behavior of the pile.

The present study has extended OpenSees, which is an open-source software framework DOS program for developing applications to idealize geotechnical and structural problems, for the static analysis of axial load capacity and settlement of single piles in MS Windows environment. The Windows version of OpenSees as improved by this study has enhanced the DOS version from a general purpose software program to a special purpose program for driven and bored pile analysis with additional features of pre-processing and post-processing and a user friendly graphical interface. The method used in the load capacity analysis is the numerical methods based on load transfer functions combined with finite elements. The use of empirical nonlinear T-z and Q-z load transfer curves to model soil-pile interaction in skin friction and end bearing, respectively, has been shown to capture the nonlinear soil-pile response under settlement due to load. Validation studies have shown the static load capacity and settlement predictions implemented in this study are in fair agreement with reference data from the static loading tests.
The safety barrier is installed on road embankment to prevent vehicles from falling into road side slope. Among the safety barrier, flexible guardrails are usually installed. The flexible guardrail generally consists of a protection cross-beam and supporting in-line piles. These guardrail piles are installed nearby slope edge of road embankment because the side area of the road is much narrow. The protection cross-beam absorbs impact energy caused by vehicle collision. The pile-soil interaction also absorbs the rest of the impact energy and then, finally, the flexible guardrail system resists the impact load. This paper aims to investigate the pile-soil interaction subjected to impact load using centrifuge model tests. In this study, a single pile was installed in compacted residual soil and loaded under lateral impact load. An impact loading system was designed and developed available on centrifuge tests. Using this loading system, a parametric study was performed and the parameters include types of loading and ground. Finally, the ultimate bearing capacity of supporting pile under impact load was analyzed using load-displacement curve and soil reaction pressure distributions at ultimate were evaluated and compared with previous studies.

As part of study to develop LRFD (Load and Resistance Factor Design) codes for foundation structures in Korea, resistance factors for static bearing capacity of driven steel pipe piles were calibrated in the framework of reliability theory. The 57 data sets of static load tests and soil property tests conducted in the whole domestic area were collected and these load test piles were sorted into two cases: SPT N at pile tip less than 50, SPT N at pile tip equal to or more than 50. The static bearing capacity formula and the Meyerhof method using N values were applied to calculate the expected design bearing capacities of the piles. The resistance bias factors were evaluated for the two static design methods by comparing the representative measured bearing capacities with the expected design values. Reliability analysis was performed by two types of advanced methods: the First Order Reliability Method (FORM), and the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method using resistance bias factor statistics. The target reliability indices are selected as 2.0 and 2.33 for group pile case and 2.5 for single pile case, in consideration of the reliability level of the current design practice, redundancy of pile group, acceptable risk level, construction quality control, and significance of individual structure. Resistance factors of driven steel pipe piles were recommended based on the results derived from the First Order Reliability Method and the Monte Carlo Simulation method.
The efficiency of the current design methods for computing pile resistances is analyzed using field load-settlement tests results. Twelve load-settlement test data for drilled shafts and bored piles were obtained from the literature. These load-test data were fitted using the t-z method. Subsequently, the ultimate resistances were evaluated based upon the failure criteria from following methods: (1) the Davisson's approach and (2) settlement corresponding to 5% or 10% shaft diameter approach. The ultimate resistances for these drilled shafts and bored piles were also predicted using methods based on the design code from North America (United States, Canada), Europe, and Asia (Japan). The pile resistances determined from field load-settlement tests were compared with those calculated using the design codes. The comparisons show that most design codes predict a conservative resistance for drilled shafts and bored piles. However, in the case of drilled shafts, we find that some of the design codes can over-predict the resistance and, therefore, should be applied cautiously. This research also shows that the t-z method can be successfully used to predict the ultimate resistance and the load transfer mechanism for a single pile.

In order to fulfill the needs of reliable and economically feasible foundation, engineers should consider not only the working load that can endure extreme conditions but also apprehending precise behavior of continuous dynamic load while designing the foundation of offshore wind power generators. To actualize the foundation, a model pile was made in miniature. Also, calibration chamber was made and a 500mm height of sand-bed was made to perform "static lateral load experiment" and "repetitive loading experiment", total of two Lateral load tests. As a result, in Static Lateral load test, the bigger length/diameter of model pile led an increase in load displacement. However, when performing "Cyclic Lateral load test", the increase in number of under loading led the decrease in horizontal displacement from each repeated lateral load. While performing Static Lateral load test and repeated loading experiment, we could observe the decreasing in the rate of ultimate lateral load capacity increase of the pile. Also, it turned out that the higher relative density of the ground, the lower ultimate lateral load capacity by repeated horizontal loading.
Many 1g shaking table tests with an SDOF structure supported by a single pile were performed to evaluate the soil-structure interaction (SSI) effect. Since most structures supported by group piles are MDOF structures with columns, the SSI effect is simulated using a large 1g shaking table test and numerical analysis. According to the results, the movement in the piles tends to increase with input acceleration and when the input frequency is similar to the natural frequency. Furthermore, the slope of the dynamic p-y curve remains constant regardless of the variation of acceleration and input frequency. According to the results of the dynamic p-y backbone curve and the moment of group piles, a center pile with a leading pile has more soil resistance than side piles with a trailing pile, and the effect of group piles is observed above the 7D center to center pile distance.
This paper presents results from a series of model tests on laterally loaded single piles with both free-head and free-tip conditions. Model tests, using a centrifuge apparatus (middie size, Mark II in 7.1.7.) were carried out in sand based on the variation of different gravity acceleration and flexural stiffness of the pile and relative density of the soil. The aims of this study are to estimate the effect of gravity acceleratioil, flexordis stiffness, and relative density on the behavior of the pile embedded in Toyoura sand and to evaluate the applicability of a family of the p-y curves which was presented by several reseachers(Mur chison & O'Neill, neese et n., scott, Det worske veritas, nondner). The Program is deviloped by using p-y curves, and it can be used for the calculation of the displacement distri bution, bending moment distribution, and soil reaction distribution. By comparing meas ured responses with predicted one it is shown that the results of the p-y curve equation presented by Murchison & O'Neill and Kondner agreed with the general trend observed by the centrifuge tests much better than the numerical solutions predicted by the other sets of p -y curves.

In this study, the dynamic behavior of a single pile foundation was investigated by using an analytical and numerical studies. The emphasis was given on quantifying a function about the coefficient of dynamic horizontal subgrade reaction from 3D analysis. Based on the numerical analysis, a modified correction factor (α), which is used to obtain the coefficient dynamic horizontal subgrade reaction, was proposed by considering shear wave velocity of soil and confining stress. It was found that the prediction by pseudo-static analysis using the proposed coefficient is in good agreement with the general trends observed by dynamic analysis, and it represents a practical improvement in the prediction of behavior for pile foundations subjected to dynamic loads.
In practice, analysis of laterally loaded piles is carried out using beams on non-linear Winkler springs model (often known as p-y method) due to its simplicity, low computational cost and the ability to model layered soils. In this approach, soil-pile interaction along the depth is characterized by a set of discrete non-linear springs represented by p-y curves where p is the pressure on the soil that causes a relative deformation of y. p-y curves are usually constructed based on semi-empirical correlations. In order to construct API/DNV proposed p-y curve for clay, one needs two values from the monotonic stress-strain test results i.e., undrained strength ($s_u$) and the strain at 50% yield stress (${\varepsilon}_{50}$). This approach may ignore various features for a particular soil which may lead to un-conservative or over-conservative design as not all the data points in the stress-strain relation are used. However, with the increasing ability to simulate soil-structure interaction problems using highly developed computers, the trend has shifted towards a more theoretically sound basis. In this paper, principles of Mobilized Strength Design (MSD) concept is used to construct a continuous p-y curves from experimentally obtained stress-strain relationship of the soil. In the method, the stress-strain graph is scaled by two coefficient $N_C$ (for stress) and $M_C$ (for strain) to obtain the p-y curves. $M_C$ and $N_C$ are derived based on Semi-Analytical Finite Element approach exploiting the axial symmetry where a pile is modelled as a series of embedded discs. An example is considered to show the application of the methodology.
