  • The spatial distribution characteristics of airborbe mercury(Hg) were investigated used its concentration data from six measurement sites selected to represent:(1) three terminal sites with heavy traffic loads in urban area, (2) one urban residential site and (3) two mountainous sites in Korea. The measurement data obtained during September 1997 through May 1998 indicated that the mean concentration of Hg from different study sites were comparably high with the mean values spanning from 5-9ng./㎥. The concentration from all those sites were systmatically high compared to those of most background sites around world or to other Korean sites investigaed previously. When results of correlation analysis between Hg and relevant parameters were compared among different study sites. temperature was most frequently found out to be in strong correlation with Hg concentrations. Results of factor analysis also indicated that Hg concentrations could be affected simultaneously by th factors affecting such parameters as ozone, temperature, ozone, carbon monoxide, and PM. The findings of enhanced Hg levels from Ji-Ri Mountain relative to terminal site suggest that is distributions may be rather homogeneous not enough to clearly distinguish areal differences and the associated source signatures between urban and rural area. The existence of systmatically high concentrations from all investigated sites also indicate that the impact of its source processes should be quite ubiquitous, while highly variable in relatively long term scale.

  • In the present study, local heat transfer rates for co-rotating disks with two modified hubs having ventilation holes are investigated for Rossby number of 0.04, 0.1 and 0.35 to evaluate the influence of incoming flows through hub holes. A naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the rotating disks using the heat and mass transfer analogy. Flow field measurements are conducted using Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) and numerical calculations are performed simultaneously to analyze the flow patterns induced by the disk rotation. The basic flow structure in a cavity between co-rotating disks consists of three regions; the solid-body rotating inner region, the outer region with turbulence vortices and the shroud boundary layer region. The heat/mass transfer. rates on the co-rotating disks are very low near the hub due to the solid-body rotation and those increase rapidly in the outer region due to turbulence mixing. The modified hubs with ventilation holes enhances significantly the heat/mass transfer rates on the region near the hub. The results also show that the heat transfer of Hub-2 is superior to that of Hub-1, but Hub-1 is more profitable for destructing the solid-body rotating inner region.

  • Objectives: The objectives of this study were to measure passengers' exposure to ultrafine particles (UFP) and to determine effects of fuel, operating condition and position of seat. Method: UFP exposures in front and back seats of the Elephant vehicle in Seoul Grand Park were simultaneously measured by a condensation particle counter (P-Trak model 8525, TSI). The measurements were conducted 7 times with diesel-powered vehicle and 3 times with electricity vehicle in one day. The vehicle stopped at 3 locations along with 2.2 km of driving route. Results: UFP concentration in diesel-powered vehicle was significantly higher than electricity vehicle. At front seat of diesel-powered vehicle, average UFP exposure during stopping was significantly higher than during moving. When diesel-powered vehicle moved, UFP exposure in back seat was significantly higher than in front seat. Conclusions: Passengers in the diesel-powered Elephant vehicle could be exposed to high level of UFP. The UFP exposure was associated with operation condition and position of seat.

  • The Rondonia Boundary Layer Experiment (RBLE-II) was conceived to collect data the atmospheric boundary layer over two representative surface in the Amazon region of Brazil; tropical forest and a deforested, pasture area. The present study deals with the observations of atmospheric boundary layer growth and decay. Although the atmospheric boundary layer measurements made in RBLE-II were not made simultaneously over the two different surface types, some insights can be gained from analysing and comparing with their structure. The greater depth of the nocturnal boundary layer at the forest site may be due to influence of mechanical turbulence. The pasture site is aerodynamically smoother and so the downward turbulent diffusion will be much pasture than over the forest. The development of the convective boundary layer is stronger over the pasture than over the forest. The influence of the sensible heat flux is important but may be not enough to explain the difference completely. It seems that energy advection may occur from the wet and colder(forest) to the dry and warmer area(pasture), rapidly breaking up the nocturnal inversion. Such advection can explain the abrupt growth of the convective boundary layer at the pasture site during the early morning.

  • Continued observation of ARGO floats for years(about 4 years) makes the conductivity sensor more vulnerable to fouling by marine life and associated drift in salinity measurements. In this paper, we address this issue by making use of floats deployed in different years. Floats deployed in the East Sea and the Indian Ocean are examined to find out float-to-float match-ups in such a way that an older float pops up simultaneously with a newer deployment (with tolerable space-time difference). A time difference of less than five days and space difference of less than 100km are considered for the match-up data sets. For analysis of the salinity drift under the stable water mass, observations of the floats from deepest water masses have been used. From the cross-check of ARGO floats in the East Sea and the Indian Ocean, it is found that there is a systematic drift in the older float compared to later deployments. All drift results, consistently show negative bias indicating the typical nature of drift from fouled sensors. However, the drift is much less than 0.01, the specified accuracy of ARGO program.

  • NAVTEX system is an international automated direct-printing service, broadcast on 5181kHz and 490kHz, for the promulgation of navigational and meteorological warnings and urgent information to ships. With our government's adoption of the international convention for SAR(Search and Rescue) in 1993, various trials for the installation of NAVTEX system have been executed by the government committee, relating laboratory and experts. An important consideration of the installation for NAVTEX system is the availability that could broadcast messages written in korean letter. Also, the receiver which can process the signal demodulated from the two frequencies, 518kHz and 490kHz, should be developed and supplied in domestic. In this paper, the code table and algorithm for conversions between NAVTEX characters and Korean Letters are studied, and signal processing techniques of code conversion are developed. Circuit design and implementation of the NAVTEX simulator using the Direct Digital Synthesizer are discussed, code conversion algorithm and signal processing technique of the NAVTEX transmission are programmed in its circuits. For evaluating the its functional characteristics, receiving module which has I-Q channel structure is designed. From the measurements of simulator, the characteristics show the frequency stability of the $(\pm)2Hz$ and Spurious free dynamic range is -63dBc. And the simulator can generate simultaneously wanted signal and several interfere signals. So, its capability is valuable for designers of the transmitting system and NAVTEX receiver, for provider as testing facilities of the type approval.

  • Hydrogen is expected to become a new, clean source of energy for the next generation. Therefore, many studies have investigated the characteristics of the hydrogen flame. However, because the hydrogen flame has high temperature, the flame does not emit visible light, and the flame propagates at a high velocity, investigating its characteristics is difficult. In the present study, in order to simultaneously examine the flame temperature and flame propagation velocity of hydrogen/air mixtures, ultra fine thermocouples with diameters of 12.7, 25.4, and 50.8 ${\mu}m$ are utilized. The results show that it is possible to detect the arrival time of the flame. Due to the temperature compensation with the time constants of thermocouples, it is also possible to estimate the flame temperature.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate analytical method for the measurement of carbonyl compounds and to apply method to the measurement of indoor and outdoor concentrations of these compounds at public facilities. For sampling, 2.4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) coated DNPH-Silica cartridges were uwed in this study. DNPH reacts with carbonyl compounds and forms carbonyl hydrazone, The carbonyl hydarzone was eluted from the cartridge with acetonitrile and analyzed by reverse-phase HPLC with UV detection. Possible interference caused by ozone during sampling was eliminated by using KI trap commected in series with the DNPH-Silica cartridge. A number of experimental studies were undertaken to evaluate and validate the analytical method, including collection efficiency, recovery, repeatability, lower limits of detection, and effect of ozone. Indoor and outdoor measurements of carbonyl compounds were simultaneously carried out at 14 public facilities located in Taegu city and Kyungsan city from June to July, 1995. Except for one or two sites, the indoor concentrations were found to be higher than the outdoor concentrations for carbonyl compounds. And the concentrations of carbonyl compounds measured in the morning and afternoon were showed higher than the concentrations measured in the evening.

  • To investigate statistics of flamelet in a turbulent premixed flame and to obtain components of their burning velocities in a vertical plane above a pipe-flow burner, the local motion of flamelets with respect to gas are measured by specially arranged diagnostics, composed of an electrostatic probe with four identical sensors and a two-color four-beam LDV system. With this technique, the three-dimensional local flame-front-velocity vector is measured by the electrostatic probe for the first time, and simultaneously the axial and radial components of the local gas-velocity vector in a vertical plane above the vertically oriented burner are measured by the LDV system. Two components of burning velocities of planar flamelets can be obtained from these results and are found to be distributed over different directions and to range in magnitude from nearly zero to a few times the planar, unstrained adiabatic laminar burning velocity measured in the unburnt gas. It may be concluded from these results that turbulence exerts measurable influences on flamelets and causes at least some of them to exhibit increased burning velocity.
