  • The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has been collaborating with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), to install a diagnostic coronagraph on the International Space Station (ISS). The coronagraph is designed to obtain simultaneous measurements of electron density, temperature, and velocity using multiple filters in the 3-10 Rs range. In 2019, we developed a new coronagraph and launched it on a stratospheric balloon (BITSE) from Fort Sumner, New Mexico in USA. As the next step, the coronagraph will be further developed, installed and operated on the ISS (CODEX) in 2023 to understand the physical conditions in the solar wind acceleration region, and enable and validate the next generation space weather models. In this presentation, we will report recent progress and introduce future plan.

  • Coronal Diagnostic Experiment (CODEX) is a diagnostic coronagraph developed by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to be deployed in 2023 on the International Space Station (ISS). It is designed to obtain simultaneous measurements of electron density, temperature, and velocity in the 2.5 - 10 solar radius range using multiple filters. The filters are mounted in two filter wheel assemblies (FWAs), which have five filter positions each. One position of each FWA is occupied by windows, and remaining eight positions are occupied by three bandpass filters for temperature, two bandpass filters for velocity, one Ca II H filter for F-corona, one broadband filter for fast imaging and density, and one neutral density (ND) filter for direct Sun viewing and safety.

  • Effects of 1, 4-dihydropyridine compounds, such as nifedipine, nisoldipine, nitrendipine, and nimodipine which were calcium antagonists on the normal and Ca-dependent, slow channel mediated action potentials in the guinea pig's papillary muscle were investigated. The glass microelectrode was impaled into a papillary muscle cell for measurements of potential changes with the simultaneous tracing of isometric contraction. The concentration of Ca antagonists were 1 mg/l (nifedipine and nisoldipine), 2 mg/l (nitrendipine and nimodipine), which showed the maximal inhibition of isometric contraction (above 90%) and simultaneous effects on the normal action potentials and only the halves of those concentrations were sufficient to observe the effects on the calcium action potentials. The data for analysis were only chosen when the microelectrode was maintained in a cell throughout the experiments. 1, 4-Dihydropyridine compounds decreased the action potential duration but did not affect the resting membrane potential, overshoot, and upstroke velocity of the normal action potentials with the decrease in the isometric contraction. And with the decrease in the area and amplitude of isometric contraction, the area, amplitude, upstroke velocity and duration of Ca action potential was decreased. But the differences in the effects of the Ca antagonists were not observed. Therefore it is inferred that the changes in normal and Ca action potential induced by the 1, 4-dihydropyridine compounds with a common chemical structure would be caused by the slow inward Ca-current, not by a fast Na-current.

  • To measure atmospheric temperature, water vapor, and aerosol simultaneously, an efficient multi-function Raman lidar using an ultraviolet-wavelength laser has been developed. A high-performance spectroscopic box that utilizes multicavity interference filters, mounted sequentially at small angles of incidence, is used to separate the lidar return signals at different wavelengths, and to extract the signals with high efficiency. The external experiments are carried out for simultaneous detection of atmospheric temperature, water vapor, and aerosol extinction coefficient in Beijing, under clear and hazy weather conditions. The vertical profiles of temperature, water vapor, and aerosol extinction coefficient are analyzed. The results show that for an integration time of 5 min and laser energy of 200 mJ, the mean deviation between measurements obtained by lidar and radiosonde is small, and the overall trend is similar. The statistical temperature error for nighttime is below 1 K up to a height of 6.2 km under clear weather conditions, and up to a height of 2.5 km under slightly hazy weather conditions, with 5 min of observation time. An effective range for simultaneous detection of temperature and water vapor of up to 10 km is achieved. The temperature-inversion layer is found in the low troposphere. Continuous observations verify the reliability of Raman lidar to achieve real-time measurement of atmospheric parameters in the troposphere.

  • In this paper, we present the simulation monitoring of strain and temperature during and after the cure of unsymmetric composite laminate using fiber optic sensors. Fiber Bragg grating/extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric (FBG/EFPI) hybrid sensors are used to measure those measurands. The characteristic matrix of the sensor is analytically derived and measurements can be done without sensor calibration. A wavelength-swept fiber laser is utilised as a lighr source. Two FBG/EFPI sensors are embedded in a graphite/epoxy unsymmetric cross-ply composite laminate in different directions and different locations. We perform a real time monitoring of fabrication strains and temperatures at two points of the composite laminate during cure process in an autoclave. Also, the thermal strains and temperatures of the fabricated laminate are measured in a thermal chamber. Through these experiments, we can provide a basis for the efficient smart processing of composite and know the thermal behavior of unsymmetric cross-ply composite laminate.

  • A spectrofluorimetric method for the simultaneous determination of amino acids (tryptophan and tyrosine) based on the application of multivariate calibration method such as principal component regression and partial least squares (PLS) to luminescence measurements has been studied. Emission spectra of synthetic mixtures of two amino acids were obtained at excitation wavelength of 257 ㎚. The calibration model in PCR and PLS was obtained from the spectral data in the range of 280-500 ㎚ for each standard of a calibration set of 32 standards, each containing different amounts of two amino acids. The relative standard error of prediction ($RSEP_a$) was obtained to assess the model goodness in quantifying each analyte in a validation set. The overall relative standard error of prediction ($RSEP_m$) for the mixture obtained from the results of a validation set, formed by 6 independent mixtures was also used to validate the present method.

  • Simultaneous monitoring of catecholamines and serotonin with their appropriate extraction from the biological samples is required in order to understand thoroughly the regulation of the central and peripheral nervous system. In the present research the segmented gradient elution with the solid phase extraction using a C18 cartridge rather than the previous isocratic elution with alumina extraction is successfully employed to determine norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (E), dopamine (DA), serotonin (5HT), 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5HIAA) simultaneously within 20 minutes using 3,4-dihydroxyhydrocinnamic aicd as the internal standard (IS). Linearities were obtained in the concentration range between $5{\times}10^{-6}M$ and $1{\times}10^{-4}M$ for all 7 compounds with detection limits of 0.6~1.9 ${\mu}M$. The present HPLC/ECD method yielded reasonable accuracy (relative error; -1.4~1.1%) and precision (relative standard deviation; 0.4~1.9%) for 9 measurements of the standard solution consisting of NE, E, DA, 5HT, DOPAC and 5HIAA compounds. Recoveries of catecholamines, serotonin and their metabolites from human serum were in the range of 57%~86%. While the concentrations of NE and 5HT in the serum of normal Sprague-Dawley rat were found as $1.4{\times}10^{-6}M$ and $2.6{\times}10^{-6}M$, respectively, the contents of NE and 5HT in the serum of the stressed rat were increased 5.6 times and 1.4 times more, respectively.

  • We have examined the random error of eddy covariance (EC) measurements on the basis of two-tower approach during daytime. Two EC towers were placed on the grassland with different vegetation density near Gumi-weir. We calculated the random error using three different methods. The first method (M1) is two-tower method suggested by Hollinger and Richardson (2005) where random error is based on differences between simultaneous flux measurements from two towers in very similar environmental conditions. The second one (M2) is suggested by Kessomkiat et al. (2013), which is extended procedure to estimate random error of EC data for two towers in more heterogeneous environmental conditions. They removed systematic flux difference due to the energy balance deficit and evaporative fraction difference between two sites before determining the random error of fluxes using M1 method. Here, we introduce the third method (M3) where we additionally removed systematic flux difference due to available energy difference between two sites. Compared to M1 and M2 methods, application of M3 method results in more symmetric random error distribution. The magnitude of estimated random error is smallest when using M3 method because application of M3 method results in the least systematic flux difference between two sites among three methods. An empirical formula of random error is developed as a function of flux magnitude, wind speed and measurement height for use in single tower sites near Nakdong River. This study suggests that correcting available energy difference between two sites is also required for calculating the random error of EC data from two towers at heterogeneous site where vegetation density is low.

  • The conventional water quality measurements by point sampling provide only site specific temporal water quality information but not the synoptic geographic coverage of water quality distribution. To circumvent these limitations in temporal and spatial measurements, the use of remote sensing is increasingly involved in the water quality monitoring research. In other to assess a trophic state of Yongdam reservoir using satellite imagery data, I obtained Landsat ETM data and water quality data on 16th September and 18th October 2001. The approach involved acquisition of water quality samples from boats at 33 sites on 16th September and 30 sites on 18th October 2001, simultaneous with Landsat-7 satellite overpass. The correlation coefficients between the DN values of the imagery and the concentrations of chlorophyll-a were analyzed. The visible bands(band 1,2,3) and near infrared band(band 4) data of September image showed the correlation coefficient values higher than 0.9. The October image showed the correlation coefficient values about 0.7 due to the atmospheric effect and low variation of chlorophyll-a concentration. Regression models between the chrophyll-a concentration and DN values of the Landsat imagery data have been developed for each image. The regression model was determined based on the spectral characteristics of chlorophyll, so the green band(band 2) and near infrared band(band 4) were selected to generate a trophic state map. The coefficient of determination(R2) of the regression model for 16th September was 0.95 and that of the regression model for 18th October was 0.55. According to the trophic state map made based on Aizaki's TSI and chlorophyll-a concentration, the trophic state of Yongdam reservoir was mostly eutrophic state during this study.
