Simultaneous Optimization of Structure and Control Systems Based on Convex Optimization - An approximate Approach - (볼록최적화에 의거한 구조계와 제어계의 동시최적화 - 근사적 어프로치 -)

  • This paper considers a simultaneous optimization problem of structure and control systems. The problem is generally formulated as a non-convex optimization problem for the design parameters of mechanical structure and controller. Therefore, it is not easy to obtain the global solutions for practical problems. In this paper, we parameterize all design parameters of the mechanical structure such that the parameters work in the control system as decentralized static output feedback gains. Using this parameterization, we have formulated a simultaneous optimization problem in which the design specification is defined by the Η$_2$and Η$\_$$\infty$/ norms of the closed loop transfer function. So as to lead to a convex problem we approximate the nonlinear terms of design parameters to the linear terms. Then, we propose a convex optimization method that is based on linear matrix inequality (LMI). Using this method, we can surely obtain suboptimal solution for the design specification. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Simultaneous Control of Frequency Fluctuation and Battery SOC in a Smart Grid using LFC and EV Controllers based on Optimal MIMO-MPC

  • This paper proposes a simultaneous control of frequency deviation and electric vehicles (EVs) battery state of charge (SOC) using load frequency control (LFC) and EV controllers. In order to provide both frequency stabilization and SOC schedule near optimal performance within the whole operating regions, a multiple-input multiple-output model predictive control (MIMO-MPC) is employed for the coordination of LFC and EV controllers. The MIMO-MPC is an effective model-based prediction which calculates future control signals by an optimization of quadratic programming based on the plant model, past manipulate, measured disturbance, and control signals. By optimizing the input and output weights of the MIMO-MPC using particle swarm optimization (PSO), the optimal MIMO-MPC for simultaneous control of the LFC and EVs, is able to stabilize the frequency fluctuation and maintain the desired battery SOC at the certain time, effectively. Simulation study in a two-area interconnected power system with wind farms shows the effectiveness of the proposed MIMO-MPC over the proportional integral (PI) controller and the decentralized vehicle to grid control (DVC) controller.

  • This paper presents a close-loop feedback control scheme, which can simultaneously satisfy multiple conflicting control performances, for a high speed positioning system driven by a brushless D.C. motor. With the dynamic model of the motor and proportional-plus-derivative feedback controllers selected as sample controllers, the convex combined feedback controller is formulated for implementing a direct-drive manipulator. Experimental results show that the developed multiple simultaneous specification(MSS) controller can meet desired control performances; maximum overshoot and rise time.

  • The paper illustrates a possible application of control theory to an economic growth system. Simultaneous nonlinear system of differential equations has been modeled which is different from the traditional formulation, based on the theory of economic growth for a two-sector (dual) economy. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the optimal control are derived directly from the Hamiltonian, and the optimal controls are also obtained by solving simultaneous equations. Obtaining the trajectories of the optimal control and state variables, however, should rely on the numerical procedures. Empirical application has been conducted for the case of the Korean economy as an illustration.

Comparison of the Performance of a Smoke Control System by Pressurization (가압방식에 따른 전실제연설비의 성능 비교 연구)

  • This study compared the performance of a smoke control system in the case of a fire with that in the case of non-fire. Single-pressurization in the vestibule, single-pressurization in the stairwell, simultaneous smoke control of the stairwell and vestibule, which was the pressurization of smoke control, were assessed. The result showed that simultaneous smoke control of the stairwell and vestibule can maintain the differential pressure and is least influenced for the evacuation of evacuees. In addition, for the status of smoke control in Korea and the proper pressurization method, these results highlight the necessity of improving the current pressurization method through the survey.

  • Simultaneous precision positioning and vibration suppression of a reciprocating flexible manipulator is investigated in this paper. The flexible manipulator is driven by a multifunctional active strut with fuzzy logic controllers. The multifunctional active strut is a combination of a motor assembly and a piezoelectric stack actuator to simultaneously provide precision positioning and wide frequency bandwidth vibration suppression capabilities. First, the multifunctional active strut and the flexible manipulator are introduced, and their dynamic models are derived. A control strategy is then proposed, which includes a position controller and a vibration controller to achieve simultaneous precision positioning and vibration suppression of the flexible manipulator. Next, fuzzy logic control approach is presented to design a fuzzy logic position controller and a fuzzy logic vibration controller. Finally, experiments are conducted for the fuzzy logic controllers and the experimental results are compared with those from a PID control scheme consisting of a PID position controller and a PID vibration control. The comparison indicates that the fuzzy logic controller can easily handle the non-linearity in the strut and provide higher position accuracy and better vibration reduction with less control power consumption.

  • A simultaneous optimal design problem of structural and control systems is discussed by taking a 3-D truss structure as an object. We use descriptor forms for a controlled object and a generalized plant because the structural parameters appear naturally in these forms. We consider a minimum weight design problem for structural system and disturbance suppression problem for the control system. The structural objective function is the structural weight and the control objective function is $H_{\infty}$ norm from the disturbance input to the controlled output in the closed-loop system. The design variables are cross sectional areas of the truss members. The conditions for the existence of controller are expressed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMI) By minimizing the linear sum of the normalized structural objective function and control objective function, it is possible to make optimal design by which the balance of the structural weight and the control performance is taken. We showed in this paper the validity of simultaneous optimal design of structural and control systems.

  • This paper concerns the problem of simultaneous fault detection and disturbance reject control(SFDDRC) for a class of linear time-invariant system. In the framework of fault detection, residual generators are required to be robust to disturbances existing in the system. Different from most of the existing simultaneous fault and control(SFDC) methods, SFDDRC rejects the influences of disturbances on residual generators by disturbance observer-based control(DOBC). This not only effectively improves the accuracy of fault detection, but also solves the problem that most of the existing SFDC methods require that the disturbance must be bounded. Finally, a numerical example is given to verify the validity of the method.

Simultaneous Trajectory Tracking Control of Position and Force with Pneumatic Cylinder Driving Apparatus

  • In this study, a position and force simultaneous trajectory tracking control algorithm is proposed for a driving apparatus that consists of two pneumatic cylinders connected in series. The controller applied to the driving apparatus is composed of a non-interaction controller to compensate for interaction between cylinders and a disturbance observer aimed to reduce the effect of model discrepancy that cannot be compensated by the non-interaction controller. The effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm is proved by experimental results.

Simultaneous Tests with Combining Functions under Normality

  • We propose simultaneous tests for mean and variance under the normality assumption. After formulating the null hypothesis and its alternative, we construct test statistics based on the individual p-values for the partial tests with combining functions and derive the null distributions for the combining functions. We then illustrate our procedure with industrial data and compare the efficiency among the combining functions with individual partial ones by obtaining empirical powers through a simulation study. A discussion then follows on the intersection-union test with a combining function and simultaneous confidence region as a simultaneous inference; in addition, we discuss weighted functions and applications to the statistical quality control. Finally we comment on nonparametric simultaneous tests.
