Vertical drains along with the preloading technique have been commonly used to enhance the consolidation rate of dredged placement formation. In practice, vertical drains are usually installed in the process of self-weight consolidation of a dredged soil deposit because this process takes considerable time to be completed, which makes conventional analytical or numerical models difficult to quantify the consolidation behavior. In this paper, we propose a governing partial differential equation and develop a numerical model for 2-D axisymmetric non-linear finite strain consolidation considering self-weight consolidation to predict the behavior of a vertical drain in the dredged placement foundation which is installed during the self-weight consolidation. In order to verify the developed model in this paper, results of the numerical analysis are compared with that of the lab-scaled self-weight consolidation test. In addition, the model verification has been carried out by comparing with the simplified method. The comparisons show that the developed model can properly simulate the consolidation of the dredged placement formation with the vertical drains installed during the self-weight consolidation. Finally, the effect of construction schedule of vertical drains and of pre-loading during the self-weight consolidation is examined by simulating an imaginary dredged material placement site with a thickness of 10 m and 20 m, respectively. This simulation infers the applicability of the proposed method in this research for designing a soil improvement in a soft dredged deposit when vertical drains and pre-loading are implemented before the self-weight consolidation ceases.
The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of ventilation corridor and derive adequate policy alternatives to its application for the city of Sejong, which is located in an inland of Korean Peninsula. In order to introduce the ventilation corridor in the city, it is necessary both to understand change on fresh air flow affected by the construction of new cities and to show its effects which are able to circulate air flow of the city. The study identified ventilation effects using computational fluid dynamics models. In particular, it analyzed change on wind speed and direction after constructing of a new town and cool air flow along the lowlands generated after sunset. In addition, it identified those of reducing particulate matter when arranging buildings conforming to the ventilation corridor at block level. The policy implications derived from simulation can be summarized as follows. First, it is desirable to plan ventilation corridors so that fresh air from mountains, forests, and valleys can flow into cities and mitigate the concentration of particulate matter. Furthermore, public facilities covering parks, plazas, and playgrounds should be installed preferentially to attract safe outdoor activities near to areas with low levels of particulate matter. Finally, it is adequate to prepare for a number of alternative plans by analyzing ventilation corridors when setting out district unit plan.

In this paper, classification of spall and crack faults of gear teeth is studied by applying the ensemble empirical mode decomposition(EEMD) for the gear transmission error(TE). Finite element models of the gears with the two faults are built, and TE is obtained by simulation of the gears under loaded contact. EEMD is applied to the residuals of the TE which are the difference between the normal and faulty signal. From the result, the difference of spall and crack faults are clearly identified by the intrinsic mode functions(IMF). A simple test bed is installed to illustrate the approach, which consists of motor, brake and a pair of spur gears. Two gears are employed to obtain the TE for the normal, spalled, and cracked gears, and the type of the faults are separated by the same EEMD application process. In order to quantify the results, crest factors are applied to each IMF. Characteristics of spall and crack are well represented by the crest factors of the first and the third IMF, which are used as the feature signals. The classification is carried out using the Bayes decision theory using the feature signals acquired through the experiments.
We propose a multi-state model to analyze semi-competing risks data with interval-censored or missing intermediate events. This model is an extension of the three states of the illness-death model: healthy, disease, and dead. The 'diseased' state can be considered as the intermediate event. Two more states are added into the illness-death model to incorporate the missing events, which are caused by a loss of follow-up before the end of a study. One of them is a state of the lost-to-follow-up (LTF), and the other is an unobservable state that represents an intermediate event experienced after the occurrence of LTF. Given covariates, we employ the Lin and Ying additive hazards model with log-normal frailty and construct a conditional likelihood to estimate transition intensities between states in the multi-state model. A marginalization of the full likelihood is completed using adaptive importance sampling, and the optimal solution of the regression parameters is achieved through an iterative quasi-Newton algorithm. Simulation studies are performed to investigate the finite-sample performance of the proposed estimation method in terms of empirical coverage probability of true regression parameters. Our proposed method is also illustrated with a dataset adapted from Helmer et al. (2001).

Hydraulic and water quality models with high reliability are necessary for the efficient management of water quality in the reservoir. The model capacity can be demonstrated by the application for the various hydrological conditions. CE-QUAL-W2 model is laterally averaged two-dimensional hydraulic and water quality model. The W2 model, which is suitable for the narrow reservoir like the Jinyang reservoir as compared with the depth and length of waterbody, has been frequently used by many researchers. Namgang watershed is expected to increase the water demand. In this study, the W2 model is validated under two different hydrological conditions; wet year (2011) and normal year (2009). Using hydrological and water quality condition for calibration, 2011, the effect of water intake increase was simulated. The simulation results showed that the increase of water intake led to increase the concentrations in total nitrogen, total phosphorus and Chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ concentration. Especially the concentration increase was appeared during the dry season in each of up to 62.53% (Total nitrogen), 39.07% (Total phosphorus) and 232.19% (Chlorophyll-${\alpha}$). The changes of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ is similar to those of total phosphorus concentration.

In order to reduce damage from farmland inundation caused by recent climate change, it is necessary to predict the risk of farmland inundation accurately. Inundation modeling should be performed by considering multiple time distributions of possible rainfalls, as digital forecasts of Korea Meteorological Administration is provided on a six-hour basis. As building multiple inputs and creating inundation models take a lot of time, it is necessary to shorten the forecast time by building a data base (DB) of farmland inundation probability. Therefore, the objective of this study is to establish a DB of farmland inundation probability in accordance with forecasted rainfalls. In this study, historical data of the digital forecasts was collected and used for time division. Inundation modeling was performed 100 times for each rainfall event. Time disaggregation of forecasted rainfall was performed by applying the Multiplicative Random Cascade (MRC) model, which uses consistency of fractal characteristics to six-hour rainfall data. To analyze the inundation of farmland, the river level was simulated using the Hydrologic Engineering Center - River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). The level of farmland was calculated by applying a simulation technique based on the water balance equation. The inundation probability was calculated by extracting the number of inundation occurrences out of the total number of simulations, and the results were stored in the DB of farmland inundation probability. The results of this study can be used to quickly predict the risk of farmland inundation, and to prepare measures to reduce damage from inundation.
Changes in climate have largely increased concentrated heavy rainfall, which in turn is causing enormous damages to humans and properties. Floods are one of the most deadly and damaging natural disasters known to mankind. The flood forecasting and warning system concentrates on reducing injuries, deaths, and property damage caused by floods. Therefore, the exact relationship and the spatial variability analysis of hydrometeorological elements and characteristic factors is critical elements to reduce the uncertainty in rainfall-runoff model. In this study, grid resolution depending on the topographic factor in rainfall-runoff models presents how to respond. semi-distribution of rainfall-runoff model using the model GRM simulated and calibrated rainfall-runoff in the Gamcheon and Naeseongcheon watershed. To run the GRM model, input grid data used rainfall (two event), DEM, landuse and soil. This study selected cell size of 500 m(basic), 1 km, 2 km, 5 km, 10 km and 12 km. According to the resolution of each grid, in order to compare simulation results, the runoff hydrograph has been made and the runoff has also been simulated. As a result, runoff volume and peak discharge which simulated cell size of DEM 500 m~12 km were continuously reduced. that results showed decrease tendency. However, input grid data except for DEM have not contributed increase or decrease runoff tendency. These results showed that the more increased cell size of DEM make the more decreased slope value because of the increased horizontal distance.
In recent years, vertical extension remodeling of apartment building is considered as one of the efficient ways to broaden and enhance the utilization of existing buildings due to the rapid development of population and decrement of land resources. The reinforcement of foundation is of great importance to bearing the additional load caused by the added floors. However, because of the additional load, the carried load by the existing piles would be in excess of its allowable bearing capacity. In this study, a conceptual construction method called preloading method was presented. The preloading method applies force onto the reinforcing pile before vertical extension construction. The purpose of preloading is to transfer partial load applied on the existing piles to reinforcing piles in order to keep each pile not exceeding the allowable capacity and to mobilize resistance of reinforcing pile by developing relative settlement. The feasibility and effect of preloading method was investigated by using finite numerical method. Two simulation models, foundation reinforcement with preloading and without preloading, were developed through PLAXIS 3D program. Numerical results showed that the presented preloading method is capable of sharing partial carried load of existing pile and develops the mobilization of reinforcing pile's frictional resistance.

This paper concerns about total dynamic analysis of integrated mining system. This system consists of vertical steel pipe, intermediate buffer station, flexible pipe and self-propelled miner. The self-propelled miner and buffer are assumed as rigid-body of 6-dof. Discrete models of vertical steel pipe and flexible pipe are adopted, which are obtained by means of lumped-parameter method. The motion of mining vessel is not considered. Instead, the motion of mining vessel is taken into account in form of various boundary conditions (e.g. forced excitation in slow motion and/or fast oscillation and so on). A terramechanics model of extremely cohesive soft soil is applied to the self-propelled miner. Hinged and ball constraints are used to define the connections between sub-systems (vertical steel pipe, buffer, flexible pipe, self-propelled miner). Equations of motion of the coupled model are derived with respect to the each local coordinates system. Four Euler parameters are used to express the orientations of the sub-systems. To solve the equations of motion of the total dynamic model, an incremental-iterative formulation is employed. Newmark-${\beta}$ method is used for time-domain integration. The total dynamic responses of integrated mining system are investigated.

In city, tracing of power transmission lines is difficult due to compound installation of overhead and underground lines, transposition, bad view caused by trees or big buildings. It is hard problem for electrical technician on site to trace power transformers or power lines to serve customers in 3 phase -4 wires power distribution systems. It is necessary that the correct and fast tracing method is required for load balancing among distribution lines. Old technology use to trace lines with high power impulse injection. Our proposed method uses to trace lines with very small power high frequency signal injection. Simulation models for 3-phase power transformers, 3-phase wire lines, and customer loads are described to investigate the transmission characteristics of high frequency power line carrier. Distribution lines have only a limited ability to carry higher frequencies. Typically power transformers in the distribution system prevent propagating the higher frequency carrier signal. The proposed method uses the limited propagation ability to identify the power transformer to serve customers. The system consists of a transmitter and a receiver with power-line communication module. Some experiments are conducted to verify the theoretical concepts in a big commercial building. Also some simulations are done to help and understand the concepts by using MATLAB Simulink simulator.
