  • Filtration studies, using simulated test nanoparticles or diesel nanoparticles, have been performed about Inconel foam filters for DPF combined with electrostatic precipitation. The simulated test particles were synthesized by laser ablation in the nitrogen atmosphere at the standard condition. The diesel particles were exhausted from the diesel engine driven on the condition of idle or load mode. Filtration efficiency of the metal foam filter is very low because most of particles are penetrated through the large pores of filter. However, the efficiency was considerably improved by applying the electric field to the filter and/or charging the nanoparticles. Nevertheless, the pressure drop of filter hardly increased because the filter-pores were not clogged by deposited particles and kept open.

  • In this paper, plastic deformation behaviors of ESW105 and SCM435 steels are revealed by simulations and experiments. ESW105 is the special pre-heat-treated steel characterized by high initial yield strength and negligible strain-hardening behavior. The flow stresses of the two steels for large stain are calculated from tensile tests. Axial and lateral compressions of cylindrical bars are tested and simulated and the deformed shapes are compared to characterize the plastic deformation behaviors of the two materials. A forward extrusion process of a cylindrical bar is also simulated to reveal the difference. It has been shown that there are pretty much difference in plastic flow between ESW105 and SCM435 which causes from the difference in strain-hardening capability, implying that the experience-oriented design rules for common commercial materials may lead to failure in process design when the new material of ESW105 is applied without consideration of its plastic deformation behavior.

  • The purpose of this study is to optimize the design of a capacitive pressure sensor element using the simulation of electrical characteristics. The simulation of the ceramic sensor diaphragm ($Al_2O_3$) was performed by permitting pressure to change the curvature of the diaphragm. The pressure capacitance ($C_P$) was increased from 19.63 pF to 15.26 pF by applying pressure because the distance between the electrodes has been changed from $30{\mu}m$ to $15{\mu}m$. When the thickness of the diaphragm was changed to 0.46~0.52 mm, a larger capacitance change showed in accordance with the reduced thickness, which means an increase of sensitivity. However, considering the viewpoint of the signal linearity, it was selected for the optimum thickness of the diaphragm to 0.50 mm. The designed sensor element based on simulated results was tested to measure the output characteristics. Comparing of simulated and measured results, there was a margin of error of approximately 2%.

  • Gamma radiation shielding features for three series of binary alloys identified as (Pb-Sn), (Pb-Zn), and (Zn-Sn) have been investigated. The mass attenuation coefficients (µ/ρ) for the selected alloys were simulated using the MCNP-5 code in the energy range between 0.01 and 15 MeV. Moreover, the (µ/ρ) values were computed using WinXCOM database in the same energy range to validate the simulation results. Results reveal a good agreement between the simulated and computed values. The half value layer (HVL), mean free path (MFP), effective atomic number (Zeff) and exposure buildup factor (EBF) were evaluated for the selected binary alloys. Results showed that the PS1, PZ1, and ZS2 alloys have the best shielding parameters and better than the commercially standard and available radiation shielding materials. Therefore, the investigated alloys can be used as effective radiation shielding materials against gamma ray with energies between 0.01 and 15 MeV.

  • The outgassing effects of selected vacuum materials on the vacuum characteristics were simulated by the $VacSim^{Multi}$ simulation tool. This investigation examined the feasibility of reliably simulating the outgassing characteristics of common vacuum chamber materials (aluminum, copper, stainless steel, nickel plated steel, Viton A). The optimum design factors for these vacuum systems were suggested based on the simulation results. The baking-out effects of the modeled systems and materials on the performance of the vacuum system were also analyzed. The simulation predicted that the overall outgassing effect was more significant in the TMP system than in the DP system and that the utilization of a booster pump has a greater effect on the evacuation time than on the ultimate pressure.

  • Hardening mechanism associated with post-firing heat treatment of softening heat treated and then firing simulated Pd-Ag-Au alloy for bonding porcelain was examined by observing the change in hardness, crystal structure and microstructure. By post-firing heat treatment of as-cast, solution treated and pre-firing heat treated specimens at $650^{\circ}C$ after casting, the hardness value increased within 10 minutes. Then, hardness consistently increased until 30 minutes, and gap of hardness value among the specimens was reduced. The increase in hardness after post-firing heat treatment was caused by grain interior precipitation in the matrix. The softening heat treatment did not affect the increase in hardness by post-firing heat treatment. The precipitated phase from the parent Pd-Ag-Au-rich ${\alpha}$ phase with face-centered cubic structure by post-firing heat treatment was $Pd_3$(Sn, In) phase with face-centered tetragonal structure, which has lattice parameters of $a_{200}=4.0907{\AA}$, $c_{002}=3.745{\AA}$. From above results, appropriate post-firing heat treatment in order to support the hardness of Pd-Ag-Au metal substructure was expected to bring positive effects to durability of the prosthesis.

  • Objectives: The present study aimed to evaluate the shaping ability of 2 thermally treated nickel-titanium reciprocating systems in simulated curved canals. Materials and Methods: Forty simulated canals were prepared to apical size 25 using Reciproc Blue R25 (VDW) and WaveOne Gold Primary (Dentsply Sirona) instruments. Standard pre- and post-preparation images were taken and superimposed. The removal of resin material was measured at 5 standard points: the canal orifice, halfway between the canal orifice and the beginning of the curve, the beginning of the curve, the apex of the curve, and the end-point of the simulated canal. The data were analysed using the independent sample t-test with a 5% significance threshold. Results: The canals in which Reciproc Blue R25 was used showed a significantly greater widening than those in which WaveOne Gold was used at 4 of the 5 measurement points (p < 0.05). The Reciproc Blue R25 instrument removed significantly more resin from the inner aspect of the curve at 2 of the 5 points and similar amounts at the remaining 3 points. At the 2 apical points, there was no significant difference between the Reciproc Blue R25 and WaveOne Gold Primary instruments. Conclusion: Both instruments respected the original canal anatomy; however, WaveOne Gold resulted in a more conservative shape with less transportation.

  • The effects of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) on the corrosion and scaling of the Q235 carbon steel has been investigated in the simulated sewage water and oil field gathering pipelines production water, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS), and three-dimensional stereoscopic microscope. Results indicated that the concentration of SRB reached the maximum value on the ninth day in simulated sewage water with a large amount of scaling on the surface of specimen. In oil field gathering pipelines, a large amount of scaling and mineralization of mineral salts and thick deposition of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) layers were also observed on the surface of specimen. The thickness of biofilm was about $245{\mu}m$ within 30 days. After adding microbicides, the thickness of corrosion products film was only up to $48-106{\mu}m$ within 30 days, suggesting that SRB could induce biomineralization. Under-deposit corrosion morphology was uniform in the absence of microbicides while local corrosion was observed in the presence of microbicides.

  • In order to develop the semi-solid forming technology for magnesium alloy the rheological and thixotropic behavior of Mg alloy slurry with varying shear rates and cooling rates was investigated and simulated with considering the viscosity based on microstructures and processing variables. The viscosity of slurry of Mg alloy (AZ91D) in semi-solid region was exponentially increased with a solid fraction, and was decreased with increasing a shear rate. In order to analyze precisely the rheological behavior, the ANYCAST program modified with the Carreau model and the different heat transfer coefficient between the cast and mold was used to simulate the flow behavior of Mg semi-solid slurry during the injection into a casting mold in a high pressure diecasting machine. The simulated rheological behavior of Mg alloy slurry was matched well with the experimental results.
