The optical sensors of Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) and Ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager (OSMI) aboard the Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) will be placed in a sun synchronous orbit in 1999. The EOC and OSMI sensors are expected to produce the land mapping imagery of Korean territory and the ocean color imagery of world oceans, respectively. Utilization of the EOC and OSMI data would encompass the various fields of science and technology such as land mapping, land use and development, flood monitoring, biological oceanography, fishery, and environmental monitoring. Readiness of data support for user community is thus essential to the success of the KOMPSAT program. As part of testing such readiness prior to the KOMPSAT launch, we have performed the preliminary acceptance test for the KOMPSAT data processing system using the simulated EOC and OSMI data sets. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the readiness of the KOMPSAT data processing system, and to help data users understand how the KOMPSAT EOC and OSMI data are processed and archived. Test results demonstrate that all requirements described in the data processing specification have been met, and that the image integrity is maintained for all products. It is however noted that since the product accuracy is limited by the simulated sensor data, any quantitative assessment of image products can not be made until actual KOMPSAT images will be acquired.

Rainfall data is one of the most important data in hydrologic modeling. In this study, the impacts of spatial resolution of precipitation data on hydrological responses were assessed using SWAT in the Santa Fe River Basin, Florida. High correlations were found between the FAWN and NLDAS rainfall data, which are observed weather data and simulated weather data based on observed data, respectively. FAWN-based scenarios had higher maximum rainfall and more rainfall days and events compared to NLDAS-based scenarios. Downstream areas showed lower correlations between rainfall and peak discharge than upstream areas due to the characteristics of study site. All scenarios did not show significant differences in base flow, and showed less than 5% of differences in high flows among NLDAS-based scenarios. The impact of resolution will appear differently depending on the characteristics of the watershed and topography and the applied model, and thus, is a process that must be considered in advance in runoff simulation research. The study suggests that applying the research method to watersheds in Korea may yield more pronounced results, and highlights the importance of considering data resolution in hydrologic modeling.

This study proposes an approach for simulating high spatial resolution satellite images acquired under arbitrary sun-sensor geometry using existing images and 3D (three-dimensional) data. First, satellite images, having significant differences in spectral regions compared with those in the simulated image were transformed to the same spectral regions as those in simulated image by using the UPDM (Universal Pattern Decomposition Method). Simultaneously, shadows cast by buildings or high features under the new sun position were modeled. Then, pixels that changed from shadow into non-shadow areas and vice versa were simulated on the basis of existing images. Finally, buildings that were viewed under the new sensor position were modeled on the basis of open library-based 3D reconstruction program. An experiment was conducted to simulate WV-3 (WorldView-3) images acquired under two different sun-sensor geometries based on a Pleiades 1A image, an additional WV-3 image, a Landsat image, and 3D building models. The results show that the shapes of the buildings were modeled effectively, although some problems were noted in the simulation of pixels changing from shadows cast by buildings into non-shadow. Additionally, the mean reflectance of the simulated image was quite similar to that of actual images in vegetation and water areas. However, significant gaps between the mean reflectance of simulated and actual images in soil and road areas were noted, which could be attributed to differences in the moisture content.
Four dimensional data assimilation (FDDA) technique was considered for 3 dimensional wind field in coastal area and a set of 3 numerical experiments including control experiments has been tested for the case of the synoptic weather pattern of the weak northerly geostrophic wind with the cloud amount of less than 5/10 in autumn. A three dimensional land and sea breeze model with the sea surface temperature (SST) of 290K was performed without nudging the observed wind field and surface temperature of AWS (Automatic Weather System) for the control experiment. The results of the control experiment showed that the horizontal temperature gradient across the coastline was weakly simulated so that the strength of the sea breeze in the model was much weaker than that of observed one. The experiment with only observed horizontal wind field showed that both the pattern of local change of wind direction and the times of starting and ending of the land-sea breeze were fairly well simulated. However, the horizontal wind speed and vertical motion in the convergence zone were weakly simulated. The experiment with nudgings of both the surface temperature and wind speed showed that both the pattern of local change of wind direction and the times of starting and ending of the land-sea breeze were fairly well simulated even though the ending time of the sea breeze was delayed due to oversimulated temperature gradient along the shoreline.
Since the change in Doppler centroid according to moving targets brings alteration to the phase in azimuth differential signals of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, one can measure the velocity of the moving targets using this effect. In this study, we will investigate theoretically measuring the velocity of an object from azimuth differential signals by using range compressed data which is the interim outcome of treatment from the simulated SAR raw data of moving targets on the background of sea clutter. Also, it will provide evaluation for the elements that affect the estimation error of velocity from a single SAR sensor. By making RADARSAT-1 simulated image as a specific case, the research includes comparisons for the means of velocity measurement classified by the directions of movement in the four following cases. 1. A case of a single target without currents, 2. A case of a single target with tidal currents of 0.5 m/s, 1 m/s, and 3 m/s, 3. A case of two targets on a same azimuth line moving in a same direction and velocity, 4. A case of a single target contiguous to land where radar backscatter is strong. As a result, when two moving targets exist in SAR image outside the range of approximately 256 pixels, the velocity of the object can be measured with high accuracy. However, when other moving targets exist in the range of approximately 128 pixels or when the target was contiguous to the land of strong backscatter coefficient (NRCS: normalized radar cross section), the estimated velocity was in error by 10% at the maximum. This is because in the process of assuming the target's location, an error occurs due to the differential signals affected by other scatterers.

We employed two data assimilation techniques including MM5 Four Dimensional Data Asssimilation (FDDA) and Local Analysis and Prediction System (LAPS) to find out the effects of the changed inetial conditions on the wind fields simulation according to the objective analysis methods. We designed 5 different modeling cases. EXP B used no data assimilation system. Both EXP Fl using surface observations and EXP F2 with surface and upper-air observations employed MM5 FDDA. EXP Ll using surface observations and EXP L2 with surface and upper-air observations used LAPS. As results of, simulated wind fields using MM5 FDDA showed locally characterized wind features due to objective analysis techniques in FDDA which is forcefully interpolating simulated results into observations. EXP Fl represented a large difference in comparison of wind speed with EXP B. In case of LAPS, simulated horizontal distribution of wind fields showed a good agreement with the patterns of initial condition and EXP Ll showed comparably lesser effects of data assimilation of surface observations than EXP Fl. When upper-air observations are applied to the simulations, while MM5 FDDA could hardly have important effects on the wind fields simulation and showed little differences with simulations with merely surface observations (EXP Fl), LAPS played a key role in simulating wind fields accurately and it could contribute to alleviate the over-estimated winds in EXP Ll simulations.
Ever since high resolution satellites were launched, high-resolution satellite images have been utilized in many areas. This paper proposed methods of generating simulated satellite image using DEM(Digital Elevation Model) and digital image such as aerial photograph. There are two methods proposed in the paper: one is Direct-Indirect method and the other Indirect-Indirect, method. It is assumed that satellite attitude is not changing and perspective center is moving in the direction of flight while image is captured. The proposed methods were implemented with aerial photograph, DEM data, arbitrary orbit parameters and attitude parameters of high resolution satellite image under generation. Furthermore, for the stereo viewing, different orientation parameters and perspective center were tested for generating simulated satellite image. In addition, the quality and accuracy of the simulated satellite image generated by the proposed methods were analyzed.

This study was conducted on how to simulate runoff, which was done using existing physical models, using an LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) model based on deep learning. Tancheon, the first tributary of the Han River, was selected as the target area for the model application. To apply the model, one water level observatory and four rainfall observatories were selected, and hourly data from 2020 to 2023 were collected to apply the model. River water level of the outlet of the Tancheon basin was simulated by inputting precipitation data from four rainfall observation stations in the basin and average preceding 72-hour precipitation data for each hour. As a result of water level simulation using 2021 to 2023 data for learning and testing with 2020 data, it was confirmed that reliable simulation results were produced through appropriate learning steps, reaching a certain mean absolute error in a short period time. Despite the short data period, it was found that the mean absolute percentage error was 0.5544~0.6226%, showing an accuracy of over 99.4%. As a result of comparing the simulated and observed values of the rapidly changing river water level during a specific heavy rain period, the coefficient of determination was found to be 0.9754 and 0.9884. It was determined that the performance of LSTM, which aims to simulate river water levels, could be improved by including preceding precipitation in the input data and using precipitation data from various rainfall observation stations within the basin.

With the aid of SWAT/GRASS interface, SWAT model was applied to a representative rural watershed and evaluated for its applicability through calibration and verification using observed data. Results of the model application showed that the simulated runoff was in a good agreement with the observed data and indicated reasonable applicability of the model. In predicting sediment yield, however, there were differences between the simulated and the observed values. It seems due to the inaccurate determination of MUSLE factors, better prediction of sediment yield could be achieved by selecting more appropriate MUSLE factors for different land use types. In predicting nutrient loading, the simulation results showed a similar trend to observed data.

In this study two water quality models, widely used in Korea, WASP5 and SWRRB were applied to Lake Paldang. The simulated results were compared with the measured data. The simulation results using WASP5 showed that this model could reasonably predict the concentrations of $NO_3$-N, Organic N, and Organic P. In order to investigate the effect of pollution by non-point source SWRRB was simulated and the concentrations of nutrients were predicted. The results from WASP5 and SWRRB are not directly comparable because their input data are different and output values are differently presented. Therefore, if these two simulation models were applied simultaneously, many valuable data and information could be obtained due to their own applicabilities and advantages.
