  • The Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm has become on of the most widely used methods for nonlinear unconstrained optimization, since 1965. Recently, this algorithm has been reevaluated and many papers on this algorithm are being published. The MATLAB computer software, highly renown in engineering, also provides the Nelder-Mead algorithm and the Denis-Woods modification with FMINS function. The authors made C++ code of these algorithms and compared with FMINS on the convergence behavior and the exactness of solutions. It shows that MATLAB's FMINS is inferior to author's C++ code. So, FMINS should be corrected for every user.

  • The herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1)-encoded DNA polymerase consists of two subunits, the products of the UL30 and UL42 genes. UL30 and UL42 were coexpressed in Sf9 cells infected with recombinant baculoviruses carrying the two genes. The UL30 and UL42 gene products remained tightly associated throughout the purification, which led to a near homogeneous heterodimer composed of the DNA polymerase and UL42 protein. The DNA polymerase-UL42 protein heterodimer, purified from the recombinant baculovirus-infected Sf9 cells, showed the same high degree of processivity of deoxynucleotide polymerization as the enzyme purified from the HSV-1 infected primate cells. Like the latter, it contained a 3'-5' exonuclease activity that specifically hydrolyzes an incorrectly matched nucleotide at the 3' terminus of a primer, thereby contributing to the fidelity of DNA replication.

  • This paper deals with the visualization method of solutions of the linear programming Problem. We used the revised simplex method for the LP algorithm. To represent the solutions at each iteration, we need the informations of feasible legion and animated effect of solutions. For the visualization in high dimension space, we used the method of Projection to the three dimensions if the decision variable vector is over three dimensions, and we studied the technique of preserving original Polyhedral information such as the number of vertices. In addtion, we studied the method of visualizing unbounded feasible region and the adjacency relationship of the vortices welch is Indispensable to cisualize feasible legion.

  • Many important large-scale linear programs with special structures lead to special computational procedures which are more ef-ficient than the ordinary procedure of the generalized methods. Prob-lems and their solvers taking advantage of multiple updatings of the basis in the dual simplex type method are presented. Computational results run by the efficient algorithm and a presented. Computational results run by the efficient algorithm and a standard code MINOS for the test problems are compared and analyzed. It is shown that the amount of work for the optimal solution for the prblem can be re-duced by the new algorithm.

  • An efficient method is developed for the shape optimization of 2-D structures. The sequential linear programming is used for minimization problems. Selected set of master nodes are employed as design variables and assigned to move towards the normal direction. After adapting the nodes on the design boundary, the B-spline curves and mesh smoothing schemes are used to maintain the finite element in good quality. Finally, a numerical implementation of optimum design of an automobile torque converter piston subjected to pressure and centrifugal loads is presented. The results shows additional weight up to 13% may be saved after the shape optimization.

  • Acute gastric anisakiasis with multiple anisakid larvae infection is reported. A 68-year-old woman residing in Busan, Korea, had epigastric pain with severe vomiting about 5 hours after eating raw anchovies. Four nematode larvae penetrating the gastric mucosae in the great curvature of the middle body and fundus were found and removed during gasteroendoscopic examination. Another one thread-like moving larva was found in the great curvature of upper body on the following day. On the basis of their morphology, the worms were identified as the 3rd stage larvae of Anisakis simplex. This case is acute gastric anisakiasis provoking severe clinical problems by the multiple infection and the greatest number of anisakid larvae found in a patient in Korea.

  • The spectrum-recovery scheme in Hadamard transform spectroscopy is commonly implemented with a fast Hadamard transform (FHT). When the Hadamard or simplex matrix corresponding to the mask does not have the same ordering as the Hadamard matrix corresponding to the FHT, a modification is required. When the two Hadamard matrices are in the same equivalence class, this modification can be implemented as a permutation scheme. This paper investigates permutation schemes for this application. This paper is to relieve the confusion about the applicability of existing techniques, reveals a new, more efficient method: and leads to an extension that allows a permutation scheme to be applied to any Hadamard or simplex matrix in the appropriate equivalence class.

  • The basic concept of the model is minimizing the error range between forecasted flood inflow and actual flood inflow, and accurately forecasting the flood discharge some hours in advance depending on the concentration time(Tc) and soil moisture retention storage(Sa). Simplex method that is a multi-level optimization technique was used to search for the determination of the best parameters of RETFLO (REal-Time FLOod forecasting)model. The flood forecasting model developed was applied to several strom events of Yedang reservoir during past 10 years. Model perfomance was very good with relative errors of 10% for comparison of total runoff volume and with one hour delayed peak time.

  • This paper presents a tumor detection system for breast cancer that utilizes two-dimensional (2D) image reconstruction with microwave tomographic imaging. The breast cancer detection system under development consists of 16 transmit/receive antennas, and the microwave tomography system operates at 900 MHz. To solve a 2D inverse scattering problem, the method of moments (MoM) is employed for forward problem solving, and the simplex method employed as an optimization algorithm. The results of the reconstructed image show that the method accurately shows the position of a breast tumor.

  • In this paper, a design method for minimizing the cogging torque of an Interior Permanent Magnet Motor (IPM) is proposed based on a hybrid algorithm. The suggested optimization algorithm is based on a combination of the Response Surface Method (RSM) and Simplex Method. The results show that the proposed method provides improved characteristics compared to the conventional methods, such as a shorter calculation time and the acquisition of a more correct solution.
