As a component development of heavy duty industrial gas turbine combustor development program, pressure swirl simplex injector was designed and tested to figure out spray characteristics and performance. Injector flow rate as a function of pressure drop was measured and compared to the design target. Also spray shape was analyzed qualitatively and spray cone angle was measured from spray visualization image using shadowgraph. The flow test result showed that the injector was designed and manufactured correctly according to the design target and spray cone angle was measured from shadowgraph result. As a next step, PDA (Phase Doppler Anemometry) measurement is planned to figure out more specific spray performance and characterization.

n-Butyrate (n-BT A) increased the rate and number of infectious units produced in the in vitro reactivation of latent herpes simplex virus. While the mechanism of action of n-BT A is obscure, a continuous presence of n-BT A is necessary for its inductive effect.

Fecal samples of cats purchased in Seoul were examined for helminth ova or protozoan oocysts from December 1987 to March 1988. Out of the 41 samples,31 (75.6%) were positive and 60 (146.3%) were cumulative positive for parasites. The followings were identified In the samples: Eggs of Toxocarn cacti. Clonorchis sinensis, Metoeonimn sp., Phnrvngostomum cordntum, Spirometra erinocei, Tcenia toenicejormis and oocysts of Isosporn sp. From nine autopsied cats, larvae of Anisakis simplex, adults of C. sinensis, M. yokogawai. P cordatum, S. erinacei and T. tqeniaejormis were identified. This is the first report on the detection of Anisakis larvae from cats In Korea. The possible role of cats as a source of human infection with each parasite was discussed. RPC(Rational Polynomial Camera) models have become the replacement model of choice for a number of high resolution satellite imagery providers. RPCs(Rational Polynomial Coefficients) provide a compact accurate representation of the ground to image geometry, allowing users to perform full photogrammetric processing of satellite imagery including block adjustment, 3D feature extraction and orthorectification. This paper presents an algorithm for 3D feature extraction using downhill simpler method which requires only function evaluations, not derivatives. The algorithm was implemented as an executable software program and tested using stereo IKONOS images of Seoul city. The results showed that the proposed algorithm was fast and accurate enough to be used as a practical method for the 3D feature extraction from stereo images with RPCs.

Steroid $\Delta^1$-dehydrogenase purified from hydrocortisone-induced cells of Arthrobacter simplex converted various 3-ketosteroids into their corresponding $\Delta^1$-dehydrogenated products. The transformation efficiencies depend upon the chemical structure of the steroids, especially length of the side chain at 17 position and hydroxyl groups at 11 and 17 positions. The Km values for androstenedione, the most favorable substrate examined, and hydrocortisone were 74 ${\mu}M$ and 294 ${\mu}M$, respectively. The optimum temperature and pH of the enzyme reaction were 35$^{\circ}C$ and pH 9, respectively, and the enzyme was relatively stable at the range from 20 to 35$^{\circ}C$ and from pH 5 to 10 after one hour of incubation. The enzyme activity was markedly inhibited in the presence of $Cu^{2+},\;Fe^{3+},\;Hg^{2+},\;Mo^{6+}$ ions, and somewhat inhibited by $Zn^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}$. $\alpha,\alpha'$-Dipyridyl that inhibits 9$\alpha$-hydroxylase and accumulates 1,4-androstadiene-3,17-dione from sterols revealed no inhibitory effect on this enzyme. EGTA showed inhibitory effect. $\beta$-Estradiol competitively inhibited the enzyme activity. Chemical modifications of the enzyme were attempted with several reagents. p-Hydroxymer-curibenzoate showed inhibition of the enzyme activity and protection of the substrate. This suggests that cysteine residue may be involved in the active site of the enzyme.

In order to search for anti-Herpes simplex virus type 1(HSV-1) agents, we screened 80 specimens of Korean traditional medicine by SRB assay. The methanol extracts of Thujae orientalis Semen (Cupressaceae) showed strong anti-HSV activity among samples tested. From the butanol fraction of Thujae orientalis Semen anti-HSV-1 agent was isolated by chromatographic separation using Amberlite XAD-4 and Sephadex LH-20. The structure was elucidated by spectroscopic methods, and was identified as ${\beta}-sitosterol$ (compound I). Compound I exhibited anti-HSV-1 activity with $EC_{50}$ of 0.6 mg/ml and $CC_{50}$ of 5.99 mg/ml, respectively.

In this study, we develop a B & B type algorithm for the concave minimization problem with 0-1 knapsack constraint. Our algorithm reformulates the original problem into the singly linearly constrained concave minimization problem by relaxing 0-1 integer constraint in order to get a lower bound. But this relaxed problem is the concave minimization problem known as NP-hard. Thus the linear function that underestimates the concave objective function over the given domain set is introduced. The introduction of this function bears the following important meanings. Firstly, we can efficiently calculate the lower bound of the optimal object value using the conventional convex optimization methods. Secondly, the above linear function like the concave objective function generates the vertices of the relaxed solution set of the subproblem, which is used to update the upper bound. The fact that the linear underestimating function is uniquely determined over a given simplex enables us to fix underestimating function by considering the simplex containing the relaxed solution set. The initial containing simplex that is the intersection of the linear constraint and the nonnegative orthant is sequentially partitioned into the subsimplices which are related to subproblems.

A monoclonal antibody (mAb) to the glucoprotein D (gD) of Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) was successfully generated by hybridoma technology and characterized. The mAb, SKS2v, recognized a gD antigen with an apparent molecular mass of 60kDa in a Western blot analysis. The isotype was determined by a sandwich ELISA to be IgG2a. HSV-2 exhibited major antigens of 36, 43, 46, 47, 60, 69, 81, 96, 109, 112, 159, and 227 kDa among 25 protein profiles in SDS-PAGE, and among these antigens, those of 60, 112, 125, and 227 kDa were immunodominant in a Western blot analysis using antisera, thereby indicating that they play a role in inducing neutralizing antibodies in HSV-2 infection. When reacted with Vero cells infected with HSV-1 and HSV-2 SKSv2 showed a reactivity to the surface of the infected cells, and a gD antigen of 60 kDa appeared to be expressed in both types of HSV.

In the source localization using single dipole model, the influence of the number of electrodes, the position and direction of a single dipole on the relation between S/W ratio and dipole parameter estimation errors is important. Monte Carlo simulation was used to investigate this influence. The forward problem was calculated using three spherical shell model, and dipole parameters were optimized by means of simplex method. As the number of electrodes became large, as the dipole went from midbrain to cortex, and as the direction of dipole changed from radial to tangential, the average and standard deviation of estimation errors became small.

Steroid $\Delta^1$-dehydrogenase which introduces a double bond into the 1, 2 positions of steroid ring A was purified from Arthrobacter simplex, an excellent biotransformer of hydrocortisone into prednisolone. Hydrocortisone-induced cells were disrupted by vigorous agitation with glass beads, and a solubilized enzyme was obtained after centrifugation at 100, 000$\times$g for 90 minutes. The enzyme was purified 123-fold in three steps of chromatographic procedures with 13% yield. The last step of testosterone-agarose affinity column decisively contributed to the successful purification. The molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated to be 98, 000 by SDS-PAGE and 100, 000 by gel filtration, indicating that this enzyme behaves as a monomer. The enzyme showed demands for artificial electron acceptor, and among the several reagents tested, phenazine methosulfate acted as the most effective electron acceptor. Subcellular distribution of this enzyme was studied by centrifugation experiment. Comparison of the enzyme activities in pelleted membrane and cytosol fractions suggests that the enzyme may be a weakly attached peripheral membrane protein in vivo. But considerable amounts of enzyme was solubilized without any additional treatments for membrane protein.
