Streptococcal infection is one of the most serious disease of cultured olive flounder, Paralychthys olivaceus in Korea and caused by more than one species. However, there has been considerable confusions about the taxonomic position of the fish pathogenic streptococci. In this study, We performed the randomly amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD) pattern analysis to evaluate the possible classification in 8 streptococci isolated from diseased olive flounder and reference strains based on their DNA structure. RAPD PCR with DNA solution prepared by simple boiling and 10-mer random primer was appeared to be a good tool for discrimination of different streptococcal strains. Phenotypical characters by simple biological test and API 20 Strep corresponded well to the specific profiles of RAPD in streptococcal isolates of this study. Therefore, the RAPD profile was considered as one of differential characters to discriminate the streptococcal isolates from diseased olive flounder.
Renal scarring associated with vesico-ureteral reflux(VUR) is one of the major causes of end stage renal failure and renal hypertension in children. Urinary ${\beta}_2$-microglobulin(MG) has been suggested as a potential marker for presence of renal tubular damage. This study was designed to evaluate the significance of random urine ${\beta}_2$-MG as a predictor of presence of vesico-ureteral reflux in children with urinary tract infection(UTI). 57 children with urinary tract infection were studied. Patients were devided into two groups; 35($78.9\%$) children have UTI without VUR and 12($21.1\%$) children have UTI and VUR. Beta2-MG and creatinine in random urine sample was measured to decide the excretion ratio(${\beta}_2$-MG/creatinine). Among the 57 children with UTI, 44 children were confirmed by urine culture study and 13 children suspected by compatible clinical feature. Random urine ${\beta}_2$-MG of VUR group ($2.2{\pm}5.91$ mg/L) were significantly higher than that of simple UTI group($0.19{\pm}0.16mg/L$)(P=0.03). The ${\beta}_2$-MG/creatinine ratio of VUR group($32.41{\pm}25.7$) were significantly higher than that of simple UTI group($3.93{\pm}3.44$)(P=0.007). In conclusion, random urine ${\beta}_2$-MG and excretion ratio deserved early predictor of presence of VUR in children with UTI. And this method was more simple and inexpensive than the method of measuring ${\beta}_2$-MG with 24 hour urine collection, so might be a useful screening test for VUR in children with UTI.
Studies were conducted from May, 1993 to April, 1995 to determine the changing patterns of infection Ity the liver fluke, Clonorchis sinensis, among residents and fish hosts in Kyongbuk Province. The infection rate among residents was 7.7% by stool examination. The rate in males (11.3%) was significantly higher than females (4.1%) Positive rate of intradermal test was 27.6% in the same population. The special type of a simple catalytic model was applied for the analysis of intradermal positive reactors by age arid sex, ann the equation was Y= 0.4776 t (1 -e-0.0375t) for mates ann, y : 0.2085 (1-e-0.0138t) for females. Analysis of stool examination data by two-stage catalytic model revealed y : 0.025 (e-0.0047t _ e-0.0235t). The annual Clonorchis infection rate was 4.7 per 1,000 susceptibles and the annual loss rate was 23.5 per 1,000 infected. The frequency distribution by the eggs per gram (EPG) was calculated as well as the cumulative percentages of positives. The regression equations were y : 0.929+ 1.506 log x for males and, y : 0.473 + 1.767 log x for females. Of the 25 fish species, 7 species were infected with Clonorchis mrtacercariae. Infection rates varied by the species, and ranged from 2.8% in Punfun,Bia herzi to 30.0% in Pseudorasbora panic. Average number of the matacercariae per gram of flesh was 58.1 in p. pnnpa, followed by 10.2 in Gncthopogon atromoculntus, 7.0 in Saurosobio dobryj, and 3.0 in Pcrccheilogncthus rhonlben. The present study indicates that clonorchiasis in Kyongbuk Province is less prevalent than that of several decades ago.
The purpose of this study is to present an appropriate management plan as a supplement to the scientific evidence of the currently operated distancing system for preventing COVID-19. The currently being used mathematical models are expressed as simultaneous ordinary differential equations, there is a problem in that it is difficult to use them for the management of entry and exit of small business owners. In order to supplement this point, in this paper, a method for quantitatively expressing the risk of infection by people who gather is presented in consideration of the allowable risk given to the gathering space, the basic infection reproduction index, and the risk reduction rate due to vaccination. A simple quantitative model was developed that manages the probability of infection in a probabilistic level according to a set of visitors by considering both the degree of infection risk according to the vaccination status (non-vaccinated, primary inoculation, and complete vaccination) and the epidemic status of the virus. In a given example using the model, the risk was reduced to 55% when 20% of non-vaccinated people were converted to full vaccination. It was suggested that management in terms of quarantine can obtain a greater effect than medical treatment. Based on this, a generalized model that can be applied to various situations in consideration of the type of vaccination and the degree of occurrence of confirmed cases was also presented. This model can be used to manage the total risk of people gathered at a certain space in a real time, by calculating individual risk according to the type of vaccine, the degree of inoculation, and the lapse of time after inoculation.
Calcineurin is a serine/threonine protein phosphatase controlled by $Ca^{2+}$ and calmodulin that has been implicated in various signaling pathways. Previously, we reported that calcineurin regulates coelomocyte endocytosis in Caenorhabditis elegans. So far, simple and powerful in vivo approaches have been developed to study various endocytic processes in C. elegans. Using these in vivo assays, we further analyzed the endocytic phenotypes of calcineurin mutants. We observed that the calcineurin mutants were defective in apical endocytosis in the intestine as well as synaptic vesicle recycling in the nerve cord. However, we found that calcineurin mutants displayed normal receptor-mediated endocytosis in oocytes. Therefore, our results suggest that calcineurin may regulate specific sets of endocytic processes in nematode.
Burr hole drainage has been widely used to treat chronic subdural hematomas (SDH), and most of them are easily treated by simple trephination and drainage. However, various complications, such as, hematoma recurrence, infection, seizure, cerebral edema, tension pneumocephalus and failure of the brain to expand due to cerebro-cranial disproportion may develop after chronic SDH drainage. Among them, intracerebral hemorrhage after evacuation of a recurrent chronic SDH is very rare. Here, we report a fatal case of delayed intracerebral hemorrhage caused by coagulopathy following evacuation of a chronic SDH. Possible pathogenic mechanisms of this unfavorable complication are discussed and a review of pertinent literature is included.
Bipolaris panici-miliacei, Cercospora fusimaculans, Fusarium moniliforme and Rhizoctonia solani were pathogenic fungi detected from 5 seed samples of common millet (Panicum miliaceum). Morphological characters of B. panici-miliacei were as follows. Conidiophores were dark olivaceous brown, simple, cylindrical, geniculate, and septate. Conidia were fusoid, dark olivaceous brown, tapering gradually toward the ends, straight to slightly curved, 3~13 distoseptate, and 29.4~155.4$\times$10~26 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size with dark hilum included within the contour of the basal cell. Seed infection with B. panici-miliacei caused seed rotting, coleoptile spot, and seedling blight of common millet plants. According to the inoculation experiments, B. panici-miliacei showed strong virulence on the young seedlings of common millet, but very weak virulence on the young seedlings of rice (Oryza sativa) and foxtail millet (Setaria italica).
Sonographic findings with little or no pathological significance, known as soft markers, are often found in aneuploidy fetuses. After normal screening for the aneuploidy in first trimester, there are no uniform recommendations regarding when to disregard or put on clinical significance in isolated soft markers. Associations between some soft markers and adverse pregnancy outcomes including intrauterine fetal death, preterm birth, fetal growth restriction, and congenital infection have been reported in euploidy fetuses. The present article aims to review recent literatures about the clinical significance of soft markers after normal first trimester combined screening or noninvasive prenatal testing, and propose a simple clinical summary for management of specific soft markers in pregnancies.
Boerhaave's syndrome is a very fatal condition occuring esophageal rupture during emesis and has the worst prognosis of the esophageal perforation. From May 2007 to March 2012 11 patients underwent surgical treatment for Boerhaave's syndrome at Inje University Sanggye Paik Hospital. There were 11 males whose mean age was 49.9 years ranging from 42 to 59. 2 cases of primary closure was performed and 9 cases of anastomosis using EEA (Esophago-Enteric Anastomisis) stapler. Mean operation time was 154.4 minutes and one patient who undergone primary repair died because of mediastinitis and sepsis on $35^{th}$ post-operative day. There was no leakage at other patients. Post-operative complication was one operative wound infection and one post-operative bleeding which was treated completely. Surgical treatment for Boerhaave's syndrome using EEA stapler is simple and effective technique but further studies with large number of cases should be carried out for better outcome.
System to urinalysis using FT-IR instruments is presented based on fuzzy logic knowledge. Linguistic expressions of the possibility of infection and the importance were quantified and membership functions were determined based on general quantitative criteria. Diseases considered were Diabetes Mellitus, Proteinuria, Microalbuminuria. Glucose, Protein, Albumin, Creatinine in 30 samples were analyzed by the present system, which resulted in 74% accuracy. The simple mathematical formulation of present system would enable an easy implementation in commercial analysis instruments. Also, the identical fuzzy logic can be applied to similar diagnostic environments in general.
