  • Stream ecosystems carry out significant functions such as water purification, especially denitrification. However, rapid landuse change since industrialization has altered ecological functions of streams. In this study, we aimed to investigate denitrification rates and their determinant factors in streams with different landuse patterns, and how denitrification rates vary with microtopology within streams. Ten fifth streams of each landuse were selected, and each stream was divided into four microtopological sites within streams - riparian zone, subsoil, and both head and tail parts of sand bars. In situ denitrification rates and physicochemical properties of soil were examined. Denitrification rates of agricultural, urban, and forest streams were $289.62{\pm}70.69$, $157.01{\pm}37.06$, $31.38{\pm}18.65mg$ $N_2O-N\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ respectively. There were no significant differences in denitrification rates depending on microtopology, but the rates in riparian zone were the highest, and the rates in the head parts of sandbars were lower than those of tail parts. The determinant factors for denitrification rates included water temperature, silt and clay contents of soil, inorganic nitrogen, and organic carbon, and these factors all showed positive correlations with denitrification rates. Through this study, we find that landuse pattern in watershed region affects denitrification rates that is one of considerable functions of streams. In addition, estimation of denitrification rates taking into account for microtopology would contribute to developing ecological management and restoration strategy of streams.

  • The erosion, suspension, and transport of sediment frequently occur in the coastal waters and estuarine. These processes often generate the so-called fluid mud layer, which is defined as a high-concentration aqueous suspension of fine grained sediment (> 10 g/l), consisting mainly of silt and clay-size particles. Therefore the high-resolution ultrasound is mostly used to detect or monitor the fluid mud layer. Because the sound attenuation tends to increase rapidly with the suspended sediment concentration, it is necessary to consider the accurate attenuation correction to estimate the backscattering strengths from the suspended sediment layers. In this paper, the volume backscattering strengths with various suspended sediment concentrations were measured using 5-MHz ultrasound signal in a small-scale water tank. The sound attenuation due to the viscosity and scattering from suspended sediment particles was predicted by the Richard's model and applied to the sonar equation to estimate the volume backscattering strengths from the suspended sediment concentrations. For the case that the additional attenuation was not considered, the volume backscattering strengths increased to the concentration of 20 g/l, and over this point, the backscattering strengths were roughly constant. However, for the case that the attenuation due to the suspended sediment concentration was considered, the backscattering strengths increased with the concentration.

  • The germination period, the germination under different saline concentration and temperature condition, the survival percent several halophytes in cross-transplanting experiment of marsh type and the soil environment factor of five dominant species were investigated on the halophytes population formation strategies on the salt marsh of Mankyeong river estuary from February to October 2005. In terms of germination, Suaeda japonica appeared first followed by Aster tyipolium Salicornia herbacda, Atriplex gmelini and Suaeda asparagoides. The germination percent on the humidify conditions and saline concentrations of halophytes were that Suaeda japonica germinated well under inundation conditions, high temperature and low salinity; Salicornia herbacda under high salinity; Aster tripolium and Atriplex gmelini under dry or inundation conditions, and Suaeda aspar agoides under dry conditions and high salinity. The survival percent in cross-transplanting experiment of five halophytes were high with Suaeda japonica in the low marsh; Salicornia herbacda, Aster tripolium and Atriplex gmelini in the mid marsh, Suaeda asparagoides in the high marsh. The soil properties were similar for the five halophytes, but soil texture appeared high in order of silt, sand and clay. These results suggested that population formation strategies of five halphytes. Suaeda iaponica was distributed in the low tidal marsh, Salicornia herbacda, Aster tripolium, Atriplex gmelini in the mid tidal marsh and Suaeda asparagoides in the high tidal marsh.

  • An inversion method is presented for the determination of the compressional wave speed, compressional wave attenuation, thickness of the sediment layer and density as a function of depth for a horizontally stratified ocean bottom. An experiment for estimating those properties was conducted in the shallow water of South Sea in Korea. In the experiment, a light bulb implosion and the propagating sound were measured using a VLA (vertical line array). As a method for estimating the geoacoustic properties, a coherent broadband matched field processing combined with Genetic Algorithm was employed. When a time-dependent signal is very short, the Fourier transform results are not accurate, since the frequency components are not locatable in time and the windowed Fourier transform is limited by the length of the window. However, it is possible to do this using the wavelet transform a transform that yields a time-frequency representation of a signal. In this study, this transform is used to identify and extract the acoustic components from multipath time series. The inversion is formulated as an optimization problem which maximizes the cost function defined as a normalized correlation between the measured and modeled signals in the wavelet transform coefficient vector. The experiments and procedures for deploying the light bulbs and the coherent broadband inversion method are described, and the estimated geoacoustic profile in the vicinity of the VLA site is presented.

  • To assess the effects of environmental factors on the sustainability of cultured ark shell Scapharca broughtonii production, we investigated the habitat characteristics of shellfish-farming bays (Gangjin Bay, Yeoja Bay, Keoje Bay and Deukryang Bay). We measured the physiochemical parameters (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, chemical oxygen demand and Chlorophyll a) and the geochemical characteristics (chemical oxygen demand, ignition loss, C/N ratio and C/S ratio). Surface sediments were collected from several shellfish-farming bays to examine the geochemical characteristics of both the benthic environment and heavy metal pollution. The grain sizes for Gangjin Bay, Yeoja Bay and Keoje Bay were similar, at the ratio of silt and clay in comparison with Deukryang bay of it. The C/N ratio was more than 5.9, reflecting the range arising from the mix of marine organisms and organic matter. The C/S ratio (more than 4.2) showed that the survey area had anoxic or sub-anoxic bottom conditions. The index of accumulation rate (Igeo) of the metals showed that those research areas can be classified as heavily polluted, heavily to moderately polluted, or more or less unpolluted, respectively. We suggested that the growth of ark shell Scapharca broughtonii in the shellfish-farming bay was effected by the various environmental conditions.

  • In this study, it was studied recycled soils with bentonite-polymer mixture in order to design economic landfill instead of clay liner. Recycled soil was used as SP, a sandy soil with 90.58% sand and 1.88% silt and clay. The recycled soils were mixed with 4%, 6%, and 8% bentonite by weight, and then compared with samples mixed with 2%, 3%, and 4% bentonite by weight in marine clay. Recycled soil satisfied the permeability criteria at 8%, and clay soil satisfied at 3%. In order to make a sample that satisfies the standard of the waste landfill, a permeability test was conducted by mixing 0.16%, 0.24%, and 0.28% of the polymer in a sample having 4% bentonite mixing ratio. The unconfined compression strength test was carried out at the same mixing ratio to confirm that the specification was satisfied. As the bentonite mixture ratio increased, the permeability coefficient and unconfined compression strength decreased. The strength in polymer mixing increased initially and then maintained a constant value. At 4% bentonite mixing ratio and 0.28% polymer mixing ratio, the coefficient of permeability was 1.0×10-7 cm/sec or less, and the unconfined compression strength was over 500 kPa. It was confirmed that it can be used as a mixed liner material of waste landfills.

  • Recently, in Korea, problems related with unstability of slope or sinkhole in urban area due to erosion of compacted granite soil which was used as a backfill or embankment material have been treated as important issues. Small hole might develop inside of backfill area due to erosion of not only weathered granite soil but also clay, silt, fine sand size particles when underground water flows. Once erosion starts in a soil mass, erosion rate increases gradually to cause rapid destruction. In this study, a rotating cylinder test (RCT) was performed to evaluate the hydraulic resistance characteristics of compacted weathered granite soil under various relative densities and preconsolidation pressures. Meanwhile, an image analysis method was introduced to analyze radius of irregularly eroded sample. It was found that image analysis is an effective means of minimizing the error in calculating a critical shear stress and threshold shear stress on the irregularly eroded sample. Furthermore, in general, hydraulic resistance capacity increases with the increase of relative density and preconsolidation pressure.

  • A study was carried out to develop a modified Gardner's method, which enabled us to obtain simultaneously both the unsaturated hydraulic conductivities and the moisture retention curves by the use of a soil moisture pressure-plate extractor. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity was calculated from soil moisture changes under different tension ranges in the pressure- plate extractor by means of Gardner's pressure-plate outflow equation. From 30mbar-tension to 10bar-tension, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivities obtained on three soils (Bonryang sandy loam, Yesan silt loam, and Pogog clay loam) varied $3.09{\times}10^{-2}cm/day{\sim}4.06{\times}10^{-6}cm/day$, $1.34{\times}10^{-2}cm/day{\sim}7.30{\times}10^{-6}cm/day$, and $1.83{\times}10^{-2}cm/day{\sim}8.50{\times}10^{-6}cm/day$, respectively. In comparison with the outflow method, it is inconvenient to perform the periodic determinations of the soil moisture content that require release of the applied Pressure before readjusting the pressure desired for each measurement. Nevertheless, the main advantage of the modified method is that the unsaturated hydraulic conductivities of different soils can be calculated simultaneously with a small amount of each soil sample. It is concluded that the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity can be calculated from soil moisture changes in the soil moisture pressure-plate extractor.

  • The physico-chemical characteristics of water and sediment, and structures of vegetation of the vascular hydrophytes were investigated in the West Nakdong River. Water quality was eutrophic according to the mean values and the ranges of water properties such as pH, DO, BOD, chlorophyll a, total nitrogen and phosphate, and other nutrients. A few cases were hypereutrophic for chlorophyll a level in summer. Soil reaction was weak acid. Composition of sediment was mainly sand except in SI(Sinan chideung) of which was mainly clay, and SU(Suan chideung) of which was mainly silt. Flora of vascular hydrophyte had 26 species and 1 variety comprising 16 families. Trapa japonica was dominant species in the sites of DU(Dunchido), GA(Garak chideung) and SU. Nymphoides peltata and Hydrocharis dubia dominated in DA and SI, respectively. Species diversity and evenness were relatively high in SI and SU but dominance was high in DA. After June, water lettuce(Pistia stratiotes) and water hyacinth(Eichhornia crassipes) were flowed from tributary to the river. Standing crop of macrohydrophytes was high in DA from April to August, but it showed maximum standing crop (445g·dw/㎡) in DU after disturbance by explosive growth of exotic plants in October. In comparison with those in 1985, total productivities in DU and GA decreased to 33.5%, and the reduction ratio of dominant species, Trapa japonica was 56.7%. Najas marina, N. minor, Myriophyllum spicatum and Nymphoides indica have disappeared ever since the Nakdong barrage was constructed in the Nakdong river. They were divided into three groups (GA-SU-DU, DA, SI) by cluster analysis. Introduction of the exotic species in this river caused decreasing of endemic plants including endangered species Euryale ferox and rare species Hydocharis dubia, and food plants for waterfowl such as Trapa japonica, Vallisneria asiatica and Potamogeton crispus.

  • This study was conducted to obtain basic information on the desalinization in newly reclaimed tideland. A desalinization experiment with leaching method was carried out using the soil samples collected in Haenam tideland, and the early growth response of winter barley to salt stress during the desalinization was investigated by measuring emergence rate, plant height, leaf area and fresh weight. The soil in Haenam tideland was saline-sodic with 59mS / cm of electrical conductivity and pH 8.0, and the soil texture was silty loam with 16% clay and 75% silt. Depth of water for desalinization(DWD) to decrease the electrical conductivity below 4mS /cm was 140mm in 5cm depth soil and 240mm in 20cm depth soil. The value of pH of soil and leaching water increased from 8.0 to 8.3 until the electrical conductivity decreased to about 6mS / cm during the desalinization. .The emergence rate of winter barley was over 75% in the DWD above 80mm and showed no significant difference with the DWD. The DWD for the normal growth of winter barley seedling was above 120mm at 1 and 2 weeks after sowing(WAS), and above 160mm at 3 and 4 WAS. The leaf area and fresh weight showed no response for salt stress with the DWD above 12mm at 2 WAS, and above 16mm at 3 WAS. It was estimated that the electrical conductivity of soil saturation extract for the normal growth of winter barley during early seedling growth stage in new reclaimed tideland would be below 9mS / cm in 20cm depth soil.
