  • This study was carried out to review and compare crop cultivations upon chemical properties of paddy soil and qualitative characteristics of rice in Sejong-city from a point of view of farming extension to rice farmers and to utilize the result of the study as a basic guideline for precise agricultural practice. The pH in soils of Sejong was about 6.1-6.6 and had no difference with an average pH of paddy soils in Chung-Nam with pH 6.1. However, the average of organic matter, calcium (Ca) and available silicate in Sejong was lower than the average of them in Chung-Nam. The yields of rice were higher in 2010 than in 2011 and 2012, and the protein contents of rice were the highest in 2011 while the lowest water contents of rice in 2011. The protein contents upon regions were the highest in 2011 with 6.1%, and the amylose contents were the highest in Yeondong-myun, Jeoneu-myun, and Yeonseo-myun in 2010 while Kumnam-myun and Jeondong-myun were the highest in 2012. With the increase of precipitation, the protein content level in rice was increased while the amylose content level tended to decrease. Correlations between the chemical properties of paddy soil and the quality of rice and between level of organic matter in soil and amylose contents were negative (r = -0.507), and the correlation between the moisture contents and amylose contents (r = 0.419) and between the water contents and whiteness (r = 0.485) were positive. Because the quantity and quality of rice yield is determined by the soil characteristics, the consultation to farmers for the proactive soil analysis and for the maintenance of stable level of pH, organic matter and available silicate based on historical results of analysis is highly recommended. Also, the analysis on the effect of the weather and the soil characteristics affecting the quality and quantity of rice would be another good way.

  • A laboratiory experiment incubated at about $30^{\circ}C$ for 34 days was conducted in order to learn the effect of liming materials and rice straw on the volatilization of ammonia from flooded soils applied with urea. 1. The application of calcium hydroxide and calcium silicate increased buffer action of flood soil, though it resulted in increase in the volatilization of ammonia through raising flooded soil pH containing bicarbonate. 2. The mixing of rice straw powder to soil lowered pH of flooded soil, and decreased the volatilization of ammonia. The effect was particulary large when noliming material was used. 3. Calcium hydroxide depressed the evolution of $CO_2$ in the early days of incubation after flooding, while calcium silicate promoted the ammonification of soil nitrogen from the begining of flooding giving slow change in soil chemical properties. The rice straw was also effective in providing a favorable soil condition for the ammonification rather quickly.

  • To investigate the influences of morphological features and the chemical compound of rice grain on the crack of rice kernels, rice was cultivated under the different method of fertilizer application and was harvested at optimal and late stage to the crack features of kernels of cracked and healthy grains. The results are summarized as follows ; The occurrence of cracked kernel was more severe in "Samgang-byeo" than in "Nagdong-byeo" and the rice harvested at the late stage was more cracked kernel than that of optimal harvest. The application of silicate fertilizer in addition to the N.P.K. fertilizer resulted in the decrease of cracked kernels. The grain weight, the grain volume (length ${\times}$ width ${\times}$ thickness), grain length and grain length/grain width etc. of the cracked kernels were larger than those of the healthy grains. The long "Samgang-byeo", having the long grain Shape, which has larger ratio of grain length/grain width than that of "Nagdong-byeo", shows higher rate of cracked kernels. The grain of "Samgang-byeo" which is easily cracked relatively it contains lower silica and higher phosphorus while "Nagdong-byeo" shows the opposite results. The ratio of silica/phosphorus in the grain was low in "Samgang-byeo" but it was high in "Nagdong-byeo". The ratio of silica/phosphorus in rice grain was increased by the application of silicate fertilizer in addition with N.P.K. fertilizers.

  • Fused phosphate and slag have used as a sources of phosphate and silicate fertilizers. In order to find out effects of these fertilizers on the growth of young rice plants in nursery, relationships between dry matter production and nutrient uptake at different fertilizer application rates were investigated for two rice varieties, Milyang 23 (a Indica-Japonica hybrid) and Akibare (a Japonica). The results were summarized as followers; 1. The maximum dry matter production was obtained at 75-150 kg/10a of fused phospate and 100-200 kg/10a of slag, respectively, however, a some variations between varieties were recognized. 2. The top/root ratio of varieties around 1.0 was proper for healty see dings and this ratio was reached at application of 75 kg/10a of fused phosphate and 200 kg/10a of slag. 3. The efficiency of applied silicate of rice seedlings was higher in fused phosphate than in slag. 4. The growth of seedling was severely retarded when soil pH was increased above 7 by the application of more than 225 kg/10a of fused phospahte and 400 kg/10a of slag.

  • The effects of anthracite and bituminous fly ash application on rice yield were investigated and the available silicate in paddy soil with ash application was analyzed. The obtained results are as follow : The yield of rice gradually decreased as the amount of anthracite ash increased. On the contrary, the rice yield gradually increased as the amount of bituminous ash increased. At harvesting stage the chemical properties in soil such as pH, organic content, and inorganic content($P_2O_5$, K. Ca, Mg and available $SiO_2$) were higher in bituminous ash treated soil than in anthracite treated soil. The amount of inorganic components in rice plant such as T-N, $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, CaO, and MgO gradually decreased with the growing stage of rice. However, the amount of available silicate increased with the growing stage of rice. The silicate content in soil was determined by two different methods ; 1N-NaOAc extracted method and submerging setting method. In bituminous ash treated soil, the correlation between the silicate content in plant and in soil was found when the silicate content in soil was determined by the soil submerging method. In anthracite ash treated soil, however no correlation was found between the silicate content in plant and in soil determined by either method.

  • 1. The cultivated land in Korea has originally low fertility resulting in high dependence to fertilizers. 2. The total fertilizer requirement calculated by the Office of Rural Development (ORD) in 1976 was about 1,153 thousand mts, and the total amount of supply planned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery was 1,010 thoushand mts which is close to the amount calculated by ORD. However, there is some gap between the amount of recommended (N, 11.6; $P_2O_5$: $K_2O$, 7.3kg/10a> and supply planned (N, 12.0; $P_2O_5$, 6.3; $K_2O$. 4.8kg/10a) fertilizers for each elements per unit area 3. For 15 years from 1960 to 1975 the fertilizer consumption of nitrogen was roughly increased from 200,000 mts to 500,000 mts; phosphorus, from 50,000 to 250,000 mts; potassium, from 10, 000 to 170,000 mts; accounting 2.5, 5, and 17 times of increase respectively. 4. The total fertilizer consumption for 5 years from 1967 to 1971 was about 100,000 mts and another 5years from 1971 to 1975 was 300,000 mts indicating three times increase. 5. The direct factors influenced to the increase of fertilizer consumption in recent years are 1) the dissemination of high yielding Tongil type rice varieties which are resistant to heavy fertilization 2) high price policy for agricaltural products 3) increased cultivation of vegetables:, fruits, and forages which require high level of fertilizers. The indirect factors are 1) dissemination of new improved agricultural techniques, 2, improvement of cultivated land conditions through irrigation system and land reform, 3) increased supply of silicate fertilizers, and 4) increase of farm income. 6. The percentage of total fertilizer consumption by rice (32%) and barley (25%) is about 57%. The ratio of total fertilizer consumption by vegetables and forages is expected to increase greatly. 7. Based on the increasing tendency of cultivated land and yield per unit area for last 10 years in each crop, total fertilizer consumptions in 1980, 1990, and 2000 year are estimated to 1,290,000, 1,580,000 and 1,870,000 mts respectively.

  • This study was conducted to investigate effects of granular silicate fertilizer(GSF) on growth, nutrient uptake and quality rice during cultivation. Then the chemical properties of paddy soil used for the cultivation test were pH 5.9, O.M. $13.7g\;kg^{-1}$, avail. $P_2O_5$ $48.9mg\;kg^{-1}$, and avail. $SiO_2$ $79.8mg\;kg^{-1}$. The amounts of GSF treated in the paddy soil were 0, 76, 185, 229, 413 and $489kg\;10a^{-1}$ for control, S-100(control amounts of soil available $SiO_2$), S-130, S-160, S-190 and for S-210 treatments, respectively. At results of rice growth leaf length and tiller number were more remarkable results at treatments of GSF than control. The leaf length of rice at S-100 treatment was the highest as 99.4 cm and the tiller number was the highest as 18.9 ear number at S-130 treatment. At the results of rice yield parameters, the grain and straw yield of rice were showed that all of the GSF applicated treatments were more predominant level than at the control, especially their levels were the highest values as 841.5 and $815.2kg\;10a^{-1}$ at the S-160 treatment, respectively. Also at the results of quality parameters on rice grain, a perfect kernel in the GSF applicated treatments was more increased than at control, but a broken kernel rate was inversely decreased. In results of these aspects, the chemical properties of white rice and the taste of rice by the Toyo MA-90A(Toyo rice quality taster) instrument, amylose content was the lowest value as 18.7%(generally about 20%) at S-160 treatment. Also, Mg/K ratio and rice taste value were the highest level as 0.58 and 69.1 at the S-190 and S-160 treatments respectively. The harvest yields of rice at S-160 and S-190 treatments from these growth factors were more produced about 8-13% than control. Therefore, the GSF application for rice cultivation from these results should be expected to obtain the positive effects as enhancement of rice harvest yield and improvement of quality on the cooked rice taste. Amount of GSF application could be recommended as around $200mg\;kg^{-1}$ for optimal and economical rice cultivation.

  • A laboratory study was conducted to determine the effect of nitrogen mineralization in accordance with addition of calcium silicate and wollastonite on the fresh soil condition. Results are summarized as follows. 1. Nitrogen mineralization due to application of silica materials was rapidly occured in Saweon sand soil than in Honam clay soil. Also wollastonite application more stimulated the nitrogen mineralization than calcium silicate. 2. Silica material application enhanced loss of applied nitrogen by denitrification due to accelerate the nitrification in Suweon sand soil. This tendency was more severe in calcium silicate applicated treatment than in wallasnonite applicated. 3. From these results, nitrogen should be applicated with organic matter to improve the supply of nitrogen nutrient to plant when silica materials were applied.
