Carbon nanotube(CNT) plays an essential role in various fields of nano based science and technology. Recently, silica coated CNT composites are interested because they are useful for the optical, magnetical, and catalytic applications. In this report, carboxyl groups were introduced on the MWCNT using nitric acid. In order to maximize the silica encapsulation efficiency, carboxyl groups of MWCNT reacted with a silane coupling agent were used to prepare silica coated MWCNT. Due to their strong interaction between modified MWCNT and TEOS. Silica layer with a controllable thickness was achieved. Silica coated MWCNT were further utilized as the template for the synthesis of hollow silica nanotubes after $800^{\circ}C$ calcination.

The effects of silica content were studied on UV curing characteristics and defect formations in imprinted patterns of hundreads nanometer size for the photo-curable imprinting composites with silica particles. An increase in elasticity and a decrease in shrinkage were observed with an increase in silica content in the imprinting resin which was UV cured at room temperature. However, the patterned nano-pillars were stuck together with neighboring nano-pillars if the amount of silica is more than 7 wt%. This can be ascribed to the increased viscosity of imperfectly cured resin due to the obstruction of the photo-reaction by silica particles. Addition of silica to the imprinting resin is useful in enhancing the strength of the cured resin although it is difficult to get good imprinted patterns for the resin with more than 7 wt% of silica due to the reduction of photo-reaction conversion.

In this work, the influence of thermal treatment on surface properties of silicas and mechanical interfacial properties of silicas/polyurethane composites was investigated. The surface properties of thermally treated silicas were studied in the context of Fourier Transform-IR (FT-IR), solid-state 29Si NMR spectroscopy, and contact angle. And the mechanical interfacial properties of the silica/polyurethane composites were evaluated by composite tearing energy (GIIIC). As a result, it was found that the thermally treated silica surfaces became hydrophobic in nature, due to the condensation of surface hydroxyls and the formation of siloxane bonds, resulting in increasing the London dispersive component of surface free energy. From which, the increase of the London dispersive component of the silicas led to an improvement of the dispersion of silicas in a polyurethane matrix, finally resulting in improving the tearing energy (GIIIC) of the silicas/polyurethane composites.

A epoxy/multilayered silicate nanocomposite was prepared by a new AC electric application method and micro silica particle was poured into the nanocomposite in order to prepare epoxy/micro-and-nano- mixed composites (EMNC). Electric insulation breakdown strength was measured in a sphere-sphere electrode system designed for the prevention of edge breakdown and the data were estimated by Weibull plot. As the exfoliated silicate nano-plates were homogeniously dispersed in the micro silica particles, the insulation property was higherd.

Result of an experimental study on the manufacture, the mechanical properties and waterightness of pitch-based carbon fiber reinforced fly ash.cement composites are presented in this paper. The carbon fiber reinforced fly ash.cement composites using early strength cement, silica powder and a small amount of stylene butadiene rubber latex are prepared with carbon fiber, foaming agents and mixing conditions. As a result, the mechanical and plysical properties such as compresive, tensile and flectural strengths, watertightness and cement composites are improved by using a small amount of stylene butadiene rubber latex.

The wear behavior for the two types of composites, those are epoxy matrix composites filled with silica particles and aluminium matrix composites filled with SiC particles, were compared to investigate the wear mechanism for these composites. Especially, the effect of the volume fraction for the epoxy matrix composites and the particle size for the aluminium matrix composites according to the apply load and sliding velocity were investigated. Wear tests of the pin-on-disc mode were carried out and followed by scanning electron microscope observations for the worn surface. The addition of the fillers in the composites were improved the wear resistance significantly and changed the wear mechanism for the both composites. These results were identified by the observation of the worn surface after testing.
Five natural rubber (NR) composites with different reinforcing systems of unfilled, carbon black, carbon black with silane coupling agent, silica, and silica with silane coupling agent were thermally aged and change of the crosslink densities by the accelerated thermal aging was investigated. The crosslink densities on the whole increased as the aging time elapsed irrespective of the reinforcing systems. The crosslink density changes became noticeable by increasing the aging temperature. For carbon black-filled composites, the silane coupling agent made the crosslink density change to be increased. For silica-filled composites, however, the silane coupling agent made the crosslink density increment reduced at 60 and $70^{\circ}C$ and it hardly affect the degree of the crosslink density change at 80 and $90^{\circ}C$. The activation energies for the crosslink density changes of the carbon black-filled samples increased continuously in a logarithmic fashion, whereas that of the silica-filled one showed a quasi-steady state ranges at aging times of 30-150 days. The activation energy of the unfilled sample increased exponentially with the aging time. The experimental results were explained with sulfur donation from the silane coupling agent, surface modification of the filler by the silane coupling agent, adsorption of curative residues on the silica surface, and release of the adsorbed curative residues.

Carbon-silica membranes were Prepared by Pyrolyzing polyimide/silica composite obtained from ill-situ polymerization of alkoxy silanes via sol-gel reaction. In this study, effects of silica content and silica network in polyimide matrix were focused on the gas permeation and separation properties of the final carbon-silica membrane. The membranes prepared were characterized with a field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), a solid state $^{29}$ Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ($^{29}$ Si-NMR), an electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and gas permeation tests.

In this study, the effect of metakaoline and silica fume on the bond performances of structural polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber in cement mortar, including bond strength, interface toughness, and microstructure analysis are presented. Metakaoline and silica fume contents ranging from 0 % to 15 % are used in the mix proportions. Pullout tests are conducted to measure the bond performance of PVA fiber from cement mortar. Test results showed the incorporation of metakaoline and silica fume can effectively enhance the PVA fiber-cement mortar interfacial properties. Bond strength and interface toughness increased with metakaoline and silica fume content up to 10 % in cement mortar and decreased when the metakaoline and silica fume content reached 15 %. The microstructural observation confirms the findings on the interface bond mechanism drawn from the fiber pullout test results.
