In this study, the bird fauna of Sihwa Lake in Gyeonggi Province were investigated from 2009 to 2014 to identify the effect of the restored intertidal zone on bird community. Based upon the analysis of the habitat status and distribution change of water birds in the intertidal zone, the following conclusions were obtained. The number of water bird individuals increased by approx. 40 thousand after the restoration. Most of water bird species increased, but diving ducks decreased. Analysis of the number of individuals of water birds before and after the intertidal zone restoration showed that there was a significant increase in the number of shorebird individuals. There is a habitat use pattern change in the southern tideland intertidal zone that includes the largest area of widened intertidal zone and the inland waters of the intertidal zone. This is related to the change of benthic ecosystem which is the food source of birds. The benthic ecosystem in restoring Sihwa Lake has been stabilized with a decrease in opportunistic species and consistent increase in equilibrium species that are sensitive to pollution. As a result, the environmental conditions for shorebirds have been improved. The restoration of intertidal zone affected the habitat use and distribution patterns of water birds in a short period of time. Compared to before restoration, all the water birds now use the wide area of the intertidal zone with no partiality and it is confirmed that the restoration greatly affected the distribution of shorebirds and swan & geese. This study was conduced to identify the effects of an artificial restoration of intertidal zone due to tidal power generation of bird species. In terms of maintaining and improving biodiversity, the intertidal zone restoration was recognized to be important and still shows positive results. This study is expected to provide a direction when an alternative is required to maintain and improve biodiversity in a similar situation in the future.

To estimate the contribution of epiphytic algae attached on reed to organic matter production in constructed wetland, primary productivity by epiphytic algae was investigated in two sub-wetlands (Banweol and Donhwa wetlands) of the Sihwa Constructed Wetland (CW) with different chemistry of inflows. Chlorophyll a concentration of epiphytic algae was higher in the Banweol wetland (range:37~3,581 mgChl.a/$m^2$surface stem, average:655 mgChl.a/$m^2$surface stem) than the Donhwa wetland (range:87~2,093 mgChl.a/$m^2$surface stem, average:527 mgChl.a/$m^2$surface stem). In contrast, assimilation number (AN) representing photosynthetic activity was higher in the Donhwa wetland with low TN/TP ratio than the Banweol wetland. A negative correlation (r=0.46) was observed between TN/TP ratios of inflows and AN in two wetlands, implying that high photosynthetic activity of epiphytic algae may be related with low TN/TP ratio. The areal primary productivity ranged from 307 to 2,473 mgC/$m^2$/day in the Banweol wetland and from 756 to 2,096 mgC/$m^2$/day in the Donghwa wetland, showing high productivity in summer. Average primary production was lower in the Banweol wetland (1,166 mgC/$m^2$/day) than the Donghwa wetland (1,467 mgC/$m^2$/day), although the standing crop (as chlorophyll a concentration) was high in the Banweol wetland. This result may be due to the low photosynthetic activity of epiphytic algae in the Banweol wetland with high TN/TP ratio. The annual primary production (300 tonC/year) of epiphytic algae contributed 33% of the total production in the Sihwa CW. An excessive organic matter production in constructed wetland can negatively affect the efficiency of water treatment. Therefore, the role of epiphytic algae should be considered in management of constructed wetland for water treatment.

This paper presents a waste load allocation study for the Incheon coastal environment, where a computer model, called AQUASEA, was applied. A finite element mesh was constructed and refined to cover the complicated geometry of Incheon coastal sea. The tidal height at 13 places of Incheon coastal boundary and flow of the Han River were given as an input condition to the tidal simulation. All pollution sources that discharge into Incheon coast were given as input data to the water quality simulation. The modeled parameters include tidal flow and COD(Chemical Oxygen Demand). The model was calibrated and verified with the field measurements. The model results showed reasonable agreements with field measurements in both tidal flow and water quality. Systems analysis showed that the pollution load from the Han River caused recognizable impacts on the water quality of Incheon coast from Yeomhwa waterway to northern area of Younghungdo. The loads from Incheon City affected water quality from the area below Youngjongdo to the area above Jawalldo. The discharge from the Sihwa Lake caused discernible impacts on the coastal zone from the dike outlet to the Incheon harbor, and pollution loads from Kyungkido affected the sea near the Oido. An effective water quality management plan was developed from the waste load allocation analysis of the validated model, that the maximum waste loads can be discharged without violating the water quality standard given in the Incheon coastal environment.
The Aconitum alboviolaceum Kom. complex includes four controversial species described from Korea; A. albouiolaceum, A. pseudolaeue, A. longecassidatum, and A. quelpaertense. The main objective of this study was to determine the taxonomic identities and systematic relationships among the species in the A. albouiolaceum complex based on morphology, numerical analyses and DNA sequence analysis. In the present study, variations in the principal morphological characters and chloroplast DNA noncoding region sequences (psbA-trnH IGS, trnL intron, and trnL-trnF IGS) were examined for 95 individuals from 20 populations. Also, neighbor-joining analysis was adopted to infer their relationships. Morphological variation appeared to be considerably high but not to be related to geographic distribution. These morphological results suggest that reevaluation of key morphological characters are needed for the proper taxonomic treatment of the complex. The length of psbA-trnH IGS region ranged from 241 to 250 bp, that of the trnL intron from 526 to 532 bp, and that of the trnL-trnF IGS region from 466 to 472 by in all taxa. Nine haplotypes were recognized from the analysis. Seven populations shared more than two haplotypes, while other thirteen populations shared only one haplotype. In the phylogenetic analysis, the nine haplotypes formed four groups, separated A. sibiricum, one of the sister groups of the complex. There also was no distinct grouping pattern supporting the species and populations observed. These results suggest that introgression or speciation might have been involved in the formation of taxa of A. alboviolaceum complex.

Currently serious conflicts arose for the use of coastal area in Korea. However, there is no mediation program or mediators' activities for conflict resolution which are shown in the developed countries. Even though, the MOMAF(Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) was established in 1997 and the Division of Coastal Zone Management under the Ministry took over the authority to establish ICM program and formulated the CZMA(Coastal Zone Management Act) in 1998 after understanding the seriousness of coastal degradation due to the importance of coastal zone management and the understanding of dispute resolution, it still lacks consistency among legislative power on the continuous policy for wise coastal use and management which results coastal conflicts. The objective of this study is to lay the evaluation criteria for the formalized objective evaluation among disputants of coastal conflicts for the better understanding and characterizing of coastal conflicts in Korea. In order to do so, this study has adopted the PCA(Principal Component Analysis) for the subtraction of the components of evaluation mechanism to describe the present conditions of conflicts in the selected study area(Sihwa lake), to analyze the problems, and then to explore alternative approaches for resolving the conflicts. As research methodologies, we have depended upon literature review and field survey methods. As field survey methods, we employed structured questionnaires for the various samples from the experts of research institutes, professors, representatives of NGOs and citizens. Survey results suggested that 5 representative elements comprising 35 detailed elements could be identified. Based on these results, this study was able to identify and classify the evaluation mechanism and help to resolve coastal conflicts in Korea.
This study was performed to clarify general characteristics of the bird community structure within the boundaries of Hallasan National Park. The surveys were made during April 2006 to February 2007, and the birds were identified and the individual number of those birds was counted up to 38 species and 2,323 individuals in total. Among the total 38 species, 27 residents, 6 summer visitors, 2 winter visitors and 8 passage birds were identified by migratory pattern categories. The most dominant species was Corvus macrorhynchos (14.81%), followed by the Hypsipetes amaurotis(12.66%), and the third was Carduelis sinica(10.33%), and next, Corvus corone (8.44%). About 31 species and 1,639 individuals of birds were sighted around Sallok road 1 (A), and 27 species and 693 individuals of birds were spotted around mountain trails (B), Consequently, it was found that [A] area abounds in more birds than [B] area. Species diversity (H') was distributed over the range of $1.34{\sim}2.56$ degrees in view of the surveyed areas by season. The maximum species diversity (2.56) was found in (A) area in the spring, and the minimum species diversity (1.34) was seen in [B] area in the winter. There are different distributional patterns of birds in terms of the altitude. It was also observed that there were differences in weather factors and food resources by the altitude.

In electric power transmission tower structures on offshore, implementation of life management using the event data of regular safety inspections for structural and material damages is strongly recommended. In this study, six tower structures in Sihwa Lake around Yeoungheung island were target bodies for the safety inspections. safety inspections for deterioration about each of six towers were performed about three items for steel member, five items for concrete foundation, and four items for steel-pipe pile in seawater and seawater itself. Safety inspections for steel members included the visual observations of surface appearances, the measurements of member thicknesses, and the checks of painting states. Also safety inspections for concrete foundations comprised the estimation of crack features, the evaluation of non-destructive compression strengths, and the measurements of neutralization depths and chlorides contents. For steel-pipe piles in seawater the inspections comprised the surveys of corrosion states in accordance with potential levels tests and anode tests, the analyses of photos taken on surfaces of the piles as well as the evaluation of seawater quality. A set of deterioration inspections was performed at the same positions around october of each year for three consecutive years. As a result in this study, Newly developed deterioration indexes have been applied profitably to maintain structural safety for electric power transmission towers by utilizing these event data systematically.
The estimation technique of surface water temperature by satellite remote sensing has been applied to ocean and large lakes using AVHRR. However, the spatial resolution AVHBR is not abquate for coastal region and small lakes. Landsat 5 TM has 120 m spatial resolution, which suits better. We carried out analysis of surface water temperature in Lake Sihwa and near coastal area using Landsat 5 TM. To relate digital number to the brightness temperature, we applied Empirical, NASA, RESTEC, Quadratic methods. Comparing calculated and observed value, we obtained as follows; NASA method, $R^2=0.9343$, RMSE(Root Mean Square Error)=3.5876$^{\circ}C$; RESTEC method, $R^2=0.8937$, RMSE=3.76$^{\circ}C$; Quadratic method, $R^2=0.8967$, RMSE=2.949$^{\circ}C$. Because Landsat TM has only one band for extracting surface temperature, it was difficult to correct for the atmospheric errors. For improving the accuracy of surface temperature detection using Landsat TM, there is a need for a method to decrease the effect of atmospheric contents.

In order to investigate the changes in the population of Spot-billed ducks due to changes in reclaimed land, we conducted a monthly survey from January 2008 to December 2014 at the Shihwa Lake. The average number of Spot-billed ducks was 12,204 individuals. The average population was decreased. The yearly index of fluctuation (Fi) was the highest at 2.16 in 2010. TRIM(TRends and Indices for Monitoring data) showed a steep decline in winter and a moderate decrease tendency in autumn and spring. However, in the summer season, it showed an moderate increasing tendency. The main habitat were Northland reclaimed land, agricultural land and wetland area, Tando waterway, Shihwa artificial wetland in upstream. The correlation between the number of Spot-billed ducks and the temperature was negatively correlated in spring, summer, autumn. However, winter was showed positive correlation. Therefore, it affects the community of Spot-billed ducks due to environmental changes of reclaimed land. In future, effective management is needed to prepare alternative habitat based on basic data like this study for the conservation and management of Spot-billed ducks during reclamation construction.

This study is conducted to examine spatial variations of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) in stream and waste waters of the different watershed areas (agricultural, residential, and industrial complex area) by using fluorescence 3D-EEMs (3 Dimensional Excitation Emission Matrix Spectroscopy). Furthermore, the research investigates the changes of DOM characterization by synchronous and 3D-EEMs during a rainfall event. The characterizations of DOM obtained by 3D-EEMs show two noticeable peaks at humic and protein-like regions. Humic-like substances (HLS) are found in rural and urban areas, and humic and protein-like substances (PLS) are shown in industrial area. According to the fluorescence peak $T_1:C_1$ ratios, it is observed that high amount of HLS was discharged from Banweol Industrial Complex (3TG). Additionally, linear relationships (Regression rate, $r^2$=0.65, $r^2$=0.66) have been shown between PLS (peak $T_1,\;B_1$) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), which indicates the impact of sewage. For the rainfall event (30 mm), no remarkable difference of DOM was found at rural area except increment of fluorescence intensity comparing dry period. In contrast, HLS at urban area is highly discharged within 30 minutes from the beginning of rainfall. Also, there are high influences of HLS and PLS within 20 minutes at industrial complex (4TG). Fluorescence 3D-EEMs has not only verifies a watershed of DOM origination but also monitors diffuse and point source impacts.
