IEEE 802.11 WLAN uses CSMA/CA(Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance) method in MAC(Media Access Control) protocol, and through the carrier sense checks whether other users use the channel during the data transmission to avoid the data collision. Currently, IEEE 802.11 standard recommends the use of a fixed threshold which gives an impact on carrier sensing range. However, the existing scheme using the fixed threshold causes the operation of network to be inefficiency owing to the mobility in MANET(Mobile Ad hoc NETwork). In this paper, we found the better network throughput to be obtained by applying the proposed scheme, which chooses properly the carrier sensing threshold and transmission rate considering SINR(Signal to Interference-plus-Noise Ratio), to the MANET.

In this paper, an effective scheme was proposed to estimate simple convex surface and simple concave surface which exist in image. This scheme is applied to input image to estimate simple convex surface or simple concave surface. When simple convex surface or simple concave surface exists, another proposed efficient interpolation scheme is used for the interpolated pixel to have the characteristics of simple convex surface or simple concave surface. The magnified image using the proposed schemes is more similar to the real image than the magnified image using the previous schemes. The PSNR values of the magnified images using the proposed schemes are greater than those of the magnified images using the previous interpolation schemes.
This study presents a procedure for discrimination of artificial events from earthquakes occurred in and around the Korean Peninsula using data set in the Wonju KSRS seismograph network, Korea. Two training sets representing natural and artificial earthquakes were constructed with 150 and 56 events, respectively, with high signal to noise ratio. A frequency band, Pg(4-6 Hz)/Lg(5-7 Hz), which is optimal for the discrimination of seismic sources was derived from the two-dimensional grid of Pg/Lg spectral amplitude ratio. The corrections for the effects of earthquake magnitude and hypocentral distance were carried out for improvement of discrimination capability. For correcting the effect of magnitude dependence due to the inverse proportionality of corner frequency to seismic moment, the Brune's source spectrum was subtracted from the observation spectrum. The spectrum was corrected using the optimal damping coefficient to remove damping effect with the hypocentral distance. The effect of locally varying spectrum ratio was cancelled correcting variation of wave propagation along the ray path. The performance in discrimination between training sets of natural and artificial events was compared using the Mahalanobis distance in each step of correction. The procedure of magnitude, distance, and path corrections show clear improvements of the discrimination results with increasing Mahalanobis distance, from 1.98 to 3.01, between two training sets.
In conventional diagnostic ultrasound strain imaging, when displaying strain image on a monitor, human visual characteristics are utilized such that hard regions are displayed as dark and soft regions are displayed as bright. Thus, hard regions representing tumor or cancer are displayed as dark, decreasing the contrast inside the lesion. Because the lesion area is stiff and thus displayed as dark, a method of inverting the image brightness and thereby increasing the contrast in the lesion for better diagnostic purposes is proposed wherein a postcompression signal is extended in the time domain by a factor corresponding to the reciprocal of the amount of the applied compression using a technique termed globally uniform stretching. Experiments were carried out to verify the proposed method on an ultrasound elasticity phantom with radio-frequency data acquired from a diagnostic ultrasound clinical scanner. It is found that the new method improves the contrast-to-noise ratio by a factor of up to about 1.8 compared to a conventional strain imaging method that employs a reversed gray color map without globally uniform stretching.

In this paper, the residual delay compensation algorithm is proposed for FX-type KJJVC. In case of initial version as that design algorithm of KJJVC, the integer calculation and the cos/sin table for the phase compensation coefficient were introduced in order to speed up of calculation. The mismatch between data timing and residual delay phase and also between bit-jump and residual delay phase were found and fixed. In final design of KJJVC residual delay compensation algorithm, the initialization problem on the rotation memory of residual delay compensation was found when the residual delay compensated value was applied to FFT-segment, and this problem is also fixed by modifying the FPGA code. Using the proposed residual delay compensation algorithm, the band shape of cross power spectrum becomes flat, which means there is no significant loss over the whole bandwidth. To verify the effectiveness of proposed residual delay compensation algorithm, we conducted the correlation experiments for real observation data using the simulator and KJJVC. We confirmed that the designed residual delay compensation algorithm is well applied in KJJVC, and the signal to noise ratio increases by about 8%.

This study was done to examine whether cigarette smoking improved smooth pursuit eye movement(SPEM) abnormalities in chronic schizophrenic inpatients. Fifteen schizophrenic and twelve alcoholic subjects abstained from their usual cigarette smoking for a minimum of nine hours and their baseline performances during the constant velocity smooth pursuit tasks were assessed. Then, the subjects smoked as much as they desired in a 10 minutes period and were retested immediately after smoking and 15 minutes after smoking. Electrooculographic recordings during the eye movements were converted and saved as digitized files. Power spectral density curves and natural logarithm value of signal/noise(Ln S/N) ratios were computed from them. In the schizophrenic patients, Ln S/N ratios increased significantly immediately after smoking compared to baseline. But, Ln S/N ratios showed no statistically significant changes after 15 minutes compared to baseline. In alcoholic subjects, Ln S/N ratios showed no statistically significant changes immediately after smoking and after 15 minutes compared to baseline. In conclusion, SPEM was improved in schizophrenic patients immediately after smoking and we hypothesized that nicotinic receptor dysfunction maybe a candidate mechanism for smooth pursuit eye movement abnormalities in schizophrenia.
This paper addresses a modified spectral subtraction schemes which is suitable to speech recognition under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) noisy environment such as the automatic speech recognition (ASR) system in car. The conventional spectral subtraction schemes rely on the SNR such that attenuation is imposed on that part of the spectrum that appears to have low SNR, and accentuation is made on that part of high SNR. However, such postulation is adequate for high SNR environment, it is grossly inadequate for low SNR scenarios such as that of car environment. Proposed methods focused specifically to low SNR noisy environment by using weighting function for enhancing speech dominant region in speech spectrum. Experimental results by using voice commands for car show the superior performance of the proposed method over conventional methods.
A time-reversal mirror (TRM) is useful in diverse areas, such as reverberation ing, target echo enhancement and underwater communication. In underwater communication, the bit error rate has been improved significantly due to the increased signal-to-noise ratio by spatio-temporal focusing. This paper deals with two issues. First, the optimal number of array elements for a given environment was investigated based on the exploitation of spatial diversity. Second, an algorithm was developed to determine the optimal location of the given number of array elements. The formulation is based on a genetic algorithm maximizing the contrast between the foci and area of interest as an objective function. In addition, the developed algorithm was applied to the matched field processing with ocean experimental data for verification. The sea-going data and simulation showed almost 3 dB improvement in the output power at the foci when the array elements were optimally distributed.

In this paper, multiple-relay cooperative communication network with multiple antennas is considered. Applying the soft-decision-and-forward protocol to this system, pairwise error probability(PEP) is derived and then symbol error rate(SER) is also calculated. However, in general, signals are transmitted through the orthogonal channel in the multiple-relay cooperative communication network for the prevention of interference, which is inefficient in terms of the throughput. For the improvement of throughput, the relay selection is considered, where the relay having the maximum instantaneous end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio is chosen. Performance of the system is analyzed in terms of PEP and SER. As the number of the relay increases, relay selection method outperforms the conventional multiple-relay transmission system where all relays participate in the second time slot.

In this paper, we propose a new turbo interleaver and an efficient iteration control method with low complexity for turbo decoding. Turbo codes has better performance as the number of iteration and the interleaver size increases. However, as the interleaver size is increased, it require much delay and computation for decoding. Thus we propose a new efficient turbo magic interleaver using the Magic square matrix. Simulation results show that the proposed interleaver realizes a good performance like GF, Mother interleaver proposed to IMT-2000. And as the decoding approaches the performance limit, any further iteration results in very little improvement. Therefore, we propose an efficient algorithm of decoding that can reduce the delay and computation. Just like the conventional stop criterion, it effectively stop the iteration process with very little performance degradation.
