  • Discrete wavelet transforms are extensively preferred in biomedical signal processing for denoising, feature extraction, and compression. This paper presents a new denoising method based on the modeling of discrete wavelet coefficients of ECG in selected sub-bands with Kernel density estimation. The modeling provides a statistical distribution of information and noise. A Gaussian kernel with bounded support is used for modeling sub-band coefficients and thresholds and is estimated by placing a sliding window on a normalized cumulative density function. We evaluated this approach on offline noisy ECG records from the Cardiovascular Research Centre of the University of Glasgow and on records from the MIT-BIH Arrythmia database. Results show that our proposed technique has a more reliable physical basis and provides improvement in the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and Percentage RMS Difference (PRD). The morphological information of ECG signals is found to be unaffected after employing denoising. This is quantified by calculating the mean square error between the feature vectors of original and denoised signal. MSE values are less than 0.05 for most of the cases.

  • Due to the inherent inhomogeneous and anisotropy nature of the composite materials, the detection of internal defects in these materials with non-destructive techniques is an important requirement both for quality checks during the production phase and in service inspection during maintenance operations. The estimation of the time-of-arrival (TOA) and/or time-of-flight (TOF) of the ultrasonic echoes is essential in ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT). In this paper, we used split-spectrum processing (SSP) combined with matching pursuit signal decomposition (MPSD) to develop a dedicated ultrasonic detection system. SSP algorithm is used for Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) enhancement, and the MPSD algorithm is used to decompose backscattered signals into a linear expansion of chirplet echoes and estimate the chirplet parameters. Therefore, the combination of SSP and MPSD (SSP-MPSD) presents a powerful technique for ultrasonic NDT. The SSP algorithm is achieved by using Gaussian band pass filters. Then, MPSD algorithm uses the Maximum Likelihood Estimation. The good performance of the proposed method is experimentally verified using ultrasonic traces acquired from three specimens of carbon fibre reinforced polymer multi-layered composite materials (CFRP).

  • In the area of speech processing, raw signals used to be presented in 2D format and different kinds of algorithms use the format to solve their problems. However, such kinds of presentation methods have limitations to extract characteristics from the signal, even though the algorithms are quiet good. The basic reason is that not much information can be detected from the 2D signal. Strange attractor in the field of chaos theory provides the 3D presentation method. In the area of the recognition problem, signal construction method is very important because good features can be detected from a good shape of attractors. This paper discusses a new presentation method that can be used to construct strange attractor in a different way. Normal strange attractor uses time-delay idea while the new method uses time-delay and vector average. This method provides us good information to be applied to speaker recognition problem.

  • Propagation of electromagnetic wave in the water or underground is very difficult because of the conductivity of the propagation materials. In this case, we usually use acoustic signal as ultrasonic but, it is not easy to transfer long distance with coherent method because of time varying multipath, doppler effect, and attenuations. So, we use noncoherent method as FSK to communicate between long distances. But, as the propagation speed of acoustic sound is very slow, the BW of the channel is narrow. It is very hard to guaranty the enough speed of communication like digital image data. In this paper, we proposed a new data communication protocol which can transmit multi-bit digital data with every single ping, and improve the data communication speed in the water.

  • Recently the convergence of healthcare technology is used for daily life healthcare monitoring. Cardiac arrhythmia is presented by the state of the heart irregularity. Abnormal heart's electrical signal pathway or heart's tissue disorder could be the cause of cardiac arrhythmia. Fatal arrhythmia could put patient's life at risk. Therefore arrhythmia detection is very important. Previous studies on the detection of arrhythmia in various ECG analysis and classification methods had been carried out. In this paper, an ECG signal processing techniques to detect abnormal ECG based on DTW minimum accumulation distance through the template matching for normalized data and variable threshold method for ECG R-peak detection. Signal processing techniques able to determine the occurrence of normal ECG and abnormal ECG. Abnormal ECG detection algorithm using DTW minimum accumulation distance method is performed using MITBIH database for performance evaluation. Experiment result shows the average percentage accuracy of using the propose method for Rpeak detection is 99.63 % and abnormal detection is 99.60 %.

  • In a speech coding system using excitation source of voiced and unvoiced, it would be a distortion of speech waveform in case of exist a voiced and an unvoiced consonants in a frame. In this paper, I propose a new method of TSIUVC(Transition Segment Including Unvoiced Consonant) approximate-synthesis by using Least Mean Square. As a result, a method by using Least Mean Square was obtained a high quality approximation-synthesis waveform . The important thing is that the frequency signals in a maximum error signal can be made with low distortion approximation-synthesis waveform. This method has the capability of being applied to a new speech coding of Voiced/Silence/TSIUVC, speech analysis and synthesis.

  • It is need to develop and apply a human pulse diagnosis system providing a quantitative and automatic analysis in the the oriental medicine. In order to analyze quantitatively the characteristic of pulsation, each of points had to be recognized accurately notifying the existence and the position of feature point in the wave form. And getting the period of human pulse. Thus, in this paper, it is proposed the preprocessing method of human pulse and the detection method of period by Wavelet Transformation. The human pulse is seprated from each band through Wavelet Transformation and feature points can be recognized through over the fact, and then the parameter of proposed Mac-Jin parameter is measured. Commonly, Human pulse signal has often various noises which are baseline drift, high frequency noise and so on. So it is significant to remove that noises. Thus, in this paper, the one period of human pulse is deciede and the feature points are detected after doing the preprocessing by wavelet transformation. As a result, it could be confirmed that this method is effective as a real program for the auto-diagnosis of human pulse.

  • A number of techniques have been studied to estimate the position of pedestrians in indoor space. Among them, the technique of estimating the position using only the sensors attached to the body of the pedestrian without using the infrastructure is regarded as a very important technology for special purpose pedestrians such as the firefighters. In particular, it forms a research field under the name of Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR). In this paper, we focus on a method for step detection which is essential when performing PDR using Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) mounted on a shoe. Many researches have been done to detect the stance phase where the foot contacts the ground. Most of these methods, however, have a way to detect the specific size of the sensor signal and require thresholds for these methods. This has the difficulty of changing these thresholds if the user is different. To solve this problem, we propose a stance phase detection method that does not require any threshold value. It is expected that this result will make it easier to commercialize the technology because PDR can be implemented without user-dependent parameter setting.

  • In this paper, the determination method of available bandwidth for automation of the split-spectrum processing(SSP) has been studied. The SSP is used for the visibility enhancement of the ultrasonic signal with grain noise. Even though the SSP has proved useful in signal-to-noise ratio enhancement, its application and automation have been limited due to ambiguity in the determination of available bandwidth. Until recently, it is the usual practice to optimize the available bandwidth by trial and error. The spectral histogram is the statistical distribution of the spectral windows that is selected by the minimization algorithm with the whole band of the spectrum of the received ultrasonic signal. Since the available bandwidth can be determined adaptively using spectral histogram, this method can be used for automation of the SSP. In order to evaluate the determination technique of the available bandwidth using spectral histogram, this method is applied to experimental ultrasonic data. The experimental results show that the spectral histogram is an efficient method for determination of the available bandwidth and automation of the SSP.
