  • In this paper, we introduce a method to improve the accuracy of the length estimation of targets using a radar. The HRRP (High Resolution Range Profile) obtained from a received radar signal represents the one-dimensional scattering characteristics of a target, and peaks of the HRRP means the scattering centers that strongly scatter electromagnetic waves. By using the extracted scattering centers, the downrange length of the target, which is the length in the RLOS (Radar Line of Sight), can be estimated, and the real length of the target should be estimated considering the angle between the target and the RLOS. In order to improve the accuracy of the length estimation, parametric estimation methods, which extract scattering centers more exactly than the method using the HRRP, can be used. The parametric estimation method is applied after the number of scattering centers is determined, and is thus greatly affected by the accuracy of the number of scattering centers. In this paper, in order to improve the accuracy of target length estimation, the number of scattering centers is estimated by using AIC (Akaike Information Criteria), MDL (Minimum Descriptive Length), and GLE (Gerschgorin Likelihood Estimators), which are the source number estimation methods based on information theoretic criteria. Using the ESPRIT algorithm as a parameter estimation method, a length estimation simulation was performed for simple target CAD models, and the GLE method represented excellent performance in estimating the number of scattering centers and estimating the target length.

  • This paper proposes a setup for a best multisine design method that uses a time-domain optimization. The method is based on minimization of the time-domain error, so its resulting multisine has a very accurate ACLR estimation. This is because its probability distribution and sample-to-sample correlation are close to those of the original signal, which are crucial for the testing of nonlinear power amplifiers. In addition, a hyperbolic-tangent function is introduced to control the ripple of tone magnitudes within signal bandwidth. For the verification, multisines were generated and compared for many aspects such as normalized error, in-band ripple, and ACLR estimation. Test results with different numbers of tones provide supporting evidence that the suggested multisine design has better ripple suppression, by up to 7 dB, and better accuracy, by up to 0.2 dB, when compared to the conventional method. The accuracy of the ACLR was improved by about 5 dB when the number of tones was 4. The suggested method improves the ACLR estimation performance of multisine testing due to its closer resemblance to the target modulation signal.

  • The low force estimation method of skeletal muscle was proposed by using ICA(independent component analysis) and neuro-transmission model. An EMG decomposition is the procedure by which the signal is classified into its constituent MUAP(motor unit action potential). The force index of electromyography was due to the generation of MUAP. To estimate low force, current analysis technique, such as RMS(root mean square) and MAV(mean absolute value), have not been shown to provide direct measures of the number and timing of motoneurons firing or their firing frequencies, but are used due to lack of other options. In this paper, the method based on ICA and chemical signal transmission mechanism from neuron to muscle was proposed. The force generation model consists of two linear, first-order low pass filters separated by a static non-linearity. The model takes a modulated IPI(inter pulse interval) as input and produces isometric force as output. Both the step and random train were applied to the neuro-transmission model. As a results, the ICA has shown remarkable enhancement by finding a hidden MAUP from the original superimposed EMG signal and estimating accurate IPI. And the proposed estimation technique shows good agreements with the low force measured comparing with RMS and MAV method to the input patterns.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive multi-target estimation algorithm using the characteristics of signals in the IR-UWB(Impulse-Radio Ultra Wideband) radar system, which is attracting attention because it has good transparency, robustness to the indoor environment, and high precision positioning of tens of centimeters. We proposed an algorithm that estimates multiple peaks with the characteristic that the signal reflected by the target has a peak. To verify the performance of these algorithms, multiple targets were placed in front of the radar and the existing technique and the multi - target estimation algorithm were compared. The location of the targets is estimated in real time with one transmitting antenna and one receiving antenna. The number of estimates can be increased compared with the existing peak signal derivation method, and multiple targets can be derived. The conventional technique estimates only one target, which results in a mean square error of 1 while a multi - target estimation algorithm yields a result of about 0.05. The proposed method is expected to be able to apply multiple targets to the estimation and application in one IR-UWB module environment.

  • The modern wireless communication system employes the beamforming technique based on a massive array antenna with a number of elements, for supporting the smooth communication services. A reliable beamforming technology requires the Angle-of-Arrival(: AOA) information for the signal incident to the receiving antenna, which is generally estimated by the high-resolution AOA estimation algorithm such as Multiple Signal Classification(: MUSIC). Although the MUSIC algorithm has the excellent estimation performance, it is difficult to estimate AOA in real time for the massive array antenna due to the extremely high computational complexity. In order to enhance this problem, in this paper, we propose the cascade AOA estimation algorithm based on a Flexible Massive Concentric Circular Array(: FMCCA) antenna with the On/Off function for antenna elements. The proposed cascade algorithm consists of the CAPON algorithm using some elements among entire antenna elements and the Beamspace MUSIC algorithm using entire elements. We provide computer simulation results for various scenarios to demonstrate the AOA estimation performance of the proposed approach.

  • In this paper, a hierarchical motion vector estimation algorithm using pyramidal structure is proposed. Using a smaller measurement window at each level of a pyramid than that of the conventional scheme, the proposed algorithm, based on the TSS(three step search), reduces the computational complexity greatly with its performance comparable to that of the TSS. By increasing the number of cnadidate motion vectors which are to be used as the initial search points for motion vector estimation at the next level, the performance improves further. Then the computational complexity of the proposed hierarchical algorithm depends on the number of candidate motion vectors, with its PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) ranging between those of the TSS and the full search method. The simulation results with two different block sizes and various test sequences are given and its hardware implementation is also sketched.

  • Motion estimation using one-bit transform and two-bit transform reduces the complexity for computation of matching error; however, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) is degraded. Modified 1BT (M1BT) and modified 2BT (M2BT) have been proposed to compensate degraded PSNR by adding conditional local search. However, these algorithms require many additional search points in fast moving sequences with a block size of $16{\times}16$. This paper provides more efficient search method by preparing candidate blocks using the number of non-matching points (NNMP) than the conditional local search. With this NNMP-based search, we can easily obtain candidate blocks with small NNMP and efficiently search final motion vector. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm not only reduces computational complexity, but also improves PSNR on average compared with conventional search algorithm used in M1BT, M2BT and AM2BT.

  • This basic study introduces the concept of S-BRT and develops dwell time estimation models that consider road geometry and S-BRT characteristics for a signal operation strategy to meet the S-BRT's operational goal of high speed and punctuality. Field surveys of low-floor buses similar in shape to S-BRTs and data collection of passengers, station elements, vehicle elements, and other factors that can affect stop times were used in a regression analysis to establish statistically significant dwell time estimation models. These dwell time estimation models are developed by categorizing according to the locations of the signal or sidewalk that have the most impact on the dwell time. In this way, the number of people boarding and alighting the bus at the crowded door and the number of people boarding and alighting the bus at the front door considering the internal congestion was analyzed to affect the dwell time. The estimation dwell time models in this study can be used in the establishment of strategies that provide priority signals to S-BRTs.

  • A navigation signal based on orthogonal tiered polyphase code was proposed. For the proposed signal, tiered polyphase code was used as the code of a pilot channel. Tiered polyphase code is a complex number type code, and thus the pilot channel and data channel were separated using the Walsh code which makes the correlation between different codes become 0. The results of the simulation indicated that the correlation characteristics and signal acquisition performance of the proposed signal were identical to those of tiered polyphase code, and that the disadvantage of tiered polyphase code could be supplemented through a data channel in terms of signal tracking.

  • Estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) is an algorithm that estimates the angle of a signal arriving at an array antenna using the shift invariance property of an array antenna. ESPRIT offers the good trade-off between performance and complexity. However, the ESPRIT algorithm still requires high-complexity operations such as covariance matrix and eigenvalue decomposition, so implementation with a hardware processor is essential to estimate the angle of arrival in real time. In addition, ESPRIT processors should have high performance. The performance is related to the number of antennas, and the number of antennas required for each application are different. Therefore, we proposed an ESPRIT processor that provides 2 to 8 variable antenna configurations to meet the performance and complexity requirements according to the applied field. The proposed ESPRIT processor was designed using the Verilog-HDL and implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA).
