  • This paper proposes an advanced detection technique for cable fault by eliminating the sign of reference signal in STDR(sequence time-domain reflectometry) and SSTDR(spread-spectrum time-domain reflectometry). The proposed fault-detection technique can eliminate the reference signal more effectively than the conventional one since the sign detector can approximately recover the distorted reference signal by cable and connector, and consequently, can detect the reflected signal by fault more effectively than the conventional one. Especially, it is shown that the error rate of proposed technique can be significantly lower than the conventional one in the case of far fault simulation.

  • This paper presents the implementation of an automatic road sign recognizer for an intelligent transport system. In this system, lists of road signs are processed with actions such as line segmentation, single sign segmentation, and storing an artificial sign in the database. The process of taking the video stream and extracting the road sign and storing in the database is called the road sign recognition. This paper presents a study on recognizing traffic sign patterns using a segmentation technique for the efficiency and the speed of the system. The image is converted from one scale to another scale such as RGB to grayscale or grayscale to binary. The images are pre-processed with several image processing techniques, such as threshold techniques, Gaussian filters, Canny edge detection, and the contour technique.

  • The emergence of Web 2.0 technologies, such as blogs and wiki, enable even naive users to easily create and share content on the Web using freely available content sharing tools. Wide availability of almost free data and promiscuous sharing of content through social networking platforms created a content borrowing phenomenon, where the same content appears (in many cases in the form of extensive quotations) in different outlets. An immediate side effect of this phenomenon is that identifying which content is re-used by whom is becoming a critical tool in social network analysis, including expert identification and analysis of information flow. Internet-scale reuse detection, however, poses extremely challenging scalability issues: considering the large size of user created data on the web, it is essential that the techniques developed for content-reuse detection should be fast and scalable. Thus, in this paper, we propose a $qSign_{lsh}$ algorithm, a mechanism for identifying multi-sentence content reuse among documents by efficiently combining sentence-level evidences. The experiment results show that $qSign_{lsh}$ significantly improves the reuse detection speed and provides high recall.

  • Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have emerged as a novel solution to many of the challenges of structural health monitoring (SHM) in civil engineering structures. While research projects using WSNs are ongoing worldwide, implementations of WSNs on full-scale structures are limited. In this study, a WSN is deployed on a full-scale 17.3m-long, 11-bay highway sign support structure to investigate the ability to use vibration response data to detect damage induced in the structure. A multi-level damage detection strategy is employed for this structure: the Angle-between-String-and-Horizon (ASH) flexibility-based algorithm as the Level I and the Axial Strain (AS) flexibility-based algorithm as the Level II. For the proposed multi-level damage detection strategy, a coarse resolution Level I damage detection will be conducted first to detect the damaged region(s). Subsequently, a fine resolution Level II damage detection will be conducted in the damaged region(s) to locate the damaged element(s). Several damage cases are created on the full-scale highway sign support structure to validate the multi-level detection strategy. The multi-level damage detection strategy is shown to be successful in detecting damage in the structure in these cases.

  • The existing auxiliary communicating aids for the hearing-impaired have an inconvenience of using additional expensive sensing devices. This paper presents a hand image detection based algorithm to interpret the sign language of the hearing-impaired. The proposed sign language recognition system exploits the hand image only captured by the camera without using any additional gloves with extra sensors. Based on the hand image processing, the system can perfectly classify several numeric sign language representations. This work proposes a simple lightweight classification algorithm to identify the hand image of the hearing-impaired to communicate with others even further in an environment of complex background. Experimental results show that the proposed system can interpret the numeric sign language quite well with an accuracy of 95.6% on average.

  • Road signs provide important safety information about road and traffic conditions to drivers. Road signs include not only common traffic signs but also warning information regarding unexpected obstacles and road constructions. Therefore, accurate detection and identification of road signs is one of the most important research topics related to safe driving. In this paper, we propose a 3-D vision technique to automatically detect and track road signs in a video sequence which is acquired from a stereo vision camera mounted on a vehicle. First, color information is used to initially detect the sign candidates. Second, the SVM (Support Vector Machine) is employed to determine true signs from the candidates. Once a road sign is detected in a video frame, it is continuously tracked from the next frame until it is disappeared. The 2-D position of a detected sign in the next frame is predicted by the 3-D motion of the vehicle. Here, the 3-D vehicle motion is acquired by using the 3-D pose information of the detected sign. Finally, the predicted 2-D position is corrected by template-matching of the scaled template of the detected sign within a window area around the predicted position. Experimental results show that the proposed method can detect and track many types of road signs successfully. Tracking comparisons with two different methods are shown.

  • This paper describes the improved environment recognition algorithms using some type of sensors like LiDAR and cameras. Additionally, integrated control algorithm for an autonomous vehicle is included. The integrated algorithm was based on C++ environment and supported the stability of the whole driving control algorithms. As to the improved vision algorithms, lane tracing and traffic sign recognition were mainly operated with three cameras. There are two algorithms developed for lane tracing, Improved Lane Tracing (ILT) and Histogram Extension (HIX). Two independent algorithms were combined into one algorithm - Enhanced Lane Tracing with Histogram Extension (ELIX). As for the enhanced traffic sign recognition algorithm, integrated Mutual Validation Procedure (MVP) by using three algorithms - Cascade, Reinforced DSIFT SVM and YOLO was developed. Comparing to the results for those, it is convincing that the precision of traffic sign recognition is substantially increased. With the LiDAR sensor, static and dynamic obstacle detection and obstacle avoidance algorithms were focused. Therefore, improved environment recognition algorithms, which are higher accuracy and faster processing speed than ones of the previous algorithms, were proposed. Moreover, by optimizing with integrated control algorithm, the memory issue of irregular system shutdown was prevented. Therefore, the maneuvering stability of the autonomous vehicle in severe environment were enhanced.

  • Recently, many studies on vital sign detection using a radar sensor related to Internet of Things(IoT) smart home systems have been conducted. Because vital signs such as respiration and cardiac rates generally cause micro-motions in the chest or back, the phase of the received echo signal from a target fluctuates according to the micro-motion. Therefore, vital signs are usually detected via spectral analysis of the phase. However, the probability of false alarms in cardiac rate detection increases as a result of various problems in the measurement environment, such as very weak phase fluctuations caused by the cardiac rate. Therefore, this study analyzes the difficulties of vital sign detection and proposes an efficient vital sign detection algorithm consisting of four main stages: 1) phase decomposition, 2) phase differentiation and filtering, 3) vital sign detection, and 4) reduction of the probability of false alarm. Experimental results using impulse-radio ultra-wideband radar show that the proposed algorithm is very efficient in terms of computation and accuracy.

  • This study investigated the effect of the shape and height of road signs on detection performance when detecting road signs with LiDAR, which is recognized as an essential sensor for autonomous vehicles. For the study, four types of road signs with the same area and material and different shapes were produced, and a road driving test was performed by installing a 32Ch rotating LiDAR on the upper part of the vehicle. As a result of comparing the shape of the point cloud and the NPC according to the shape of the road sign, It is expected that a distance of less than 40m is required to recognize the overall shape of a road sign using 32Ch LiDAR, and shapes such as triangles and rectangles are more advantageous than squares in securing the maximum point cloud from a long distance. As a result of the study according to the height of the road sign, At short distances (within 20m), if the height of the sign is raised to more than 2m, it deviates from the vertical viewing angle of the LiDAR and cannot express the complete point cloud shape. However, it showed a negligible effect compared to the near-field height change. These research results are expected to be utilized in the development of road facilities dedicated to LiDAR for the commercialization of autonomous cooperative driving technology.

  • Recognition of sign language is challenging due to the occlusion of hands, accuracy of hand gestures, and high computational costs. In recent years, deep learning techniques have made significant advances in this field. Although these methods are larger and more complex, they cannot manage long-term sequential data and lack the ability to capture useful information through efficient information processing with faster convergence. In order to overcome these challenges, we propose a word-level sign language recognition (SLR) system that combines a real-time human pose detection library with the minimized version of the gated recurrent unit (GRU) model. Each gate unit is optimized by discarding the depth-weighted reset gate in GRU cells and considering only current input. Furthermore, we use sigmoid rather than hyperbolic tangent activation in standard GRUs due to performance loss associated with the former in deeper networks. Experimental results demonstrate that our pose-based optimized GRU (Pose-OGRU) outperforms the standard GRU model in terms of prediction accuracy, convergency, and information processing capability.
