  • This paper presents the results of hull form design and powering performance for a 2.500 ton class trimaran frigate. A series of resistance tests and numerical calculations have been conducted to figure out the influences of side-hull form and position on the resistance characteristics of the trimaran. And the propulsion test was conducted to investigate the propulsion efficiency of the trimaran, and the powering performance of the trimaran was compared with that of the similar mono-hull ships in full scale. From the research it was found that the longitudinal position of side-hull had a large influence on the resistance characteristics of the trimaran while the side-hull form and transverse position had a small influence on it. The trimaran showed favorable resistance performance when the side-hull was located near the stern of trimaran, which was resulted from the fact that the side-hull stem was located near the primary wave hollow generated by the main hul1. The powering performance of the trimaran was superior to that of the similar mono-hull ships above the middle speed range.

  • In case that tug boat pushes side structures of other large vessels to maneuver, it is required that contacted side structures of the maneuvered vessels have enough structural safety against tug push loads. The objective of this study is to evaluate the structural effect of carling which is installed between side longitudinal stiffeners. A comparative study of side structures with carling and without carling is performed to evaluate the effect of carling member by both FE analysis. According to the result, it is found that the carlings play effective role in the strength of side plates and side longitudinal stiffeners against tug push loads.

  • This paper describes the powering, seakeeping and maneuvering performances for a 2,500-ton class trimaran. Influence of the side-hull forms and location of those in longitudinal and transverse direction to resistance performance was systematically investigated by a series of model tests and numerical calculations. It was found that the longitudinal location of side-hulls was the most influential design parameter to the resistance performance of the trimaran and the optimum location of side-hull depends on ship speeds. When the side-hull stem is located near the primary wave hollow generated by the main hull, the trimaran shows the best resistance performance. Powering performance of the trimaran is superior to those of similar mono-hull ships. Seakeeping model tests for the trimaran were executed and the results were compared with the theoretical results of a similar mono-hull ship. Generally speaking, seakeeping performance of the trimaran is superior to that of a mono-hull ship. In particular, pitching and rolling performance of the trimaran is excellent, which is due to the increased length and breadth. Maneuvering model tests using a HPMM equipment were executed to evaluate the maneuvering performance of the trimaran. Maneuvering simulation was performed using the maneuvering coefficients from the model tests. The results show that the control ability of heading angle and the direction keeping stability of the trimaran is excellent, even though the turning performance is rather worse compared to those of a similar mono-hull ship.

  • A new wave-piercing-type high-speed planing boat without a chine was developed, and its basic performance was investigated in a model test, including the resistance, trim, and sinkage. The maximum speed of the developed ship was 35 knots. The hull form was developed by combining a VSV (very slender vessel) and TH (transonic hull), which have large deadrise angles at the bow. The main dimensions were estimated by a statistical approach using actual ship data. The effect of a side fin attached at the stern near the water line was investigated from a resistance point of view. It was found that the developed hull form showed the possibility of a new concept for a high-speed planing hull without a chine, and the side fin played an important role in increasing the resistance performance by controlling the trim and sinkage in the high-speed range.

  • Nowadays, We have had a growing interest in high-speed vessels' because it is very important to save time and cost in marine transportation. The development of hull form for high-speed vessels is high priority to secure the competitive power for the transportation of cargos. Therefore, the demand of the high-speed vessels is gradually increased, but the conventional hull forms are limited by rapidly increasing resistance upon the increase of ship speed in high-speed region. Therefore, new concepts for the hull form of high-speed vessels have been requested. One of the derived hull forms for that demand is the hull form of trimaran type. Trimaran has a very slender main hull as compared with conventional single hull so that is reduced in wave resistance. The slender main hull has the undesirable characteristics of stability, but two side hulls make up for the week points in the stability. That is, trimaran is able to have desirable performances for the resistance and stability. In this paper, for the design of 200TEU class container vessel with trimaran type, which will be cruised in Yellow-Sea region, firstly a preliminary hull is designed, and the model test is carried out with the variation of side hull position. From the experience of the preliminary hull form design, an improved hull form for the 200TEU container are designed, and the model tests are carried out. Also, a numerical computation technique is adopted for the simulation of flow phenomena around the designed hull forms. The final hull form is compared with existing ships for the resistance performance from the computation with computer and ship model tests.

  • During assembling the ship block, the lifting and turnover events are not only inevitable but also very important for safety aspects and block accuracy. However, they have been executed in empirical ways rather than numerical ways in consideration of the building schedule. In this paper, a structural analysis has been carried out for the container ship side block that collapsed in the course turnover stage. As a result, the causes of collapse and countermeasure plans are presented.

  • When a ship proceeds in confined water, like canal, the water ahead of ship is pushed by hull. This pushed water returns to the side and under the hull, and this returned water will make fluid velocity higher at the side and under the hull, compared to the case in the infinite water depth. Due to the higher velocity, the pressure under the hull will decrease, resulting in the ship drop. This phenomenon is called "ship squat" and ship squat will result in various marine accidents. In this paper, for predicting ship squat, numerical calculation was carried out using commercial CFD code, FLUENT. To confirm wave pattern profile around the ship, VOF(Volume of Fluid) method was applied. The calculated results were compared with other paper's results and empirical methods.

  • The initial hull form of a 3 G/T and 30 knots class coastal leisure boat is newly developed. The performances measured, resistance, trim and sinkage, are investigated in a high-speed, circulating water channel (CWC). The effect of a fin attached on the hull side is studied together. Wave patterns are observed to clarify the relationship between the resistance performance and the wave characteristics. It can be found that the fin plays a role of increasing the resistance performance above a certain velocity.

  • Hull design for a small scale Oceanographic buoy will be introduced in this paper. The hull structure design, the connection methods between all parts will be discussed. We mainly introduce a design process of this buoy hull. We use walls with two layers and a radial bone structure to support the body to increase overall intensity and capacity to resist impact.
