  • X-ray diffraction patterns, IR spectra and zeta-potentials of silicon nitride and $\beta$-Sialon powders were investigated before and after surface manipulations. $\beta$-Sialon powder was produced from Hadong Kaolin by the carbothermic reduction and simulataneous nitridation. Isoelectric points of as-prepared Si3N4 and $\beta$-Sialon powders were 8.4 and 7.4, respectively. After both silicon nitride and $\beta$-Sialon powders were oxidized at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 24 h in air, the isoelectric points of these powders corresponded to that of silica (pH=3). I case of the addition of Darvan C as deflocculant, its isoelectric point was 3 and zeta-potential was nearly constant in the range of pH 5~12. When SN 7347 was used as deflocculant, its isoelectric point was 8.3 and zeta-potential over -156 mV was measured above pH 11.

  • Sialon ceramics are presently seen as promising materials with high hardness, strength, fracture toughness and corrosion resistance for friction and wear applications. The objective of present work is to improve of mechanical properties and wear resistance of $\alpha$-Sialon(x=0.4) by addition of SiC whisker. $\alpha$-sialon(x=0.4)/SiC whisker composites were obtained by hot-isostatic pressing at 173$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour under 1757Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ N2 pressure after pressureless sintering the mixture of Si3N4, Y2O3, AlN at 1780~180$0^{\circ}C$ for 3~5 hours in N2 atmosphere. As the amount of SiC whisker content increased, relative density and hardness were decreased, however fracture toughness, bending strength and tribological properties were improved. Tribological properties of $\alpha$-Sialon/15 vol% SiC whisker composite were improved in spite of its low mechanical properties.

  • It is believed that fly ash could be suitable for preparing the sialon by carbothermal reduction method because the total amount of SiO2 and Al2O3 is above 80% and the unburned residual carbon is above 5% within the fly ash. The effects of reaction temperature (1350, 1400, 145$0^{\circ}C$) reaction time (1, 5, 10 hours) and the amount of carbon additions (C/SiO2=2, 3, 4 mole) on the $\beta$-sialon synthesis were obserbed, It was conformed that $\beta$-sialon (Z=2.15~2.18) was formed as major phase under all of the synthesis conditions and small amount of Si2ON2 SiC, AlN and Si3N4 was formed depending on the synthesis conditions. FeSix intermetal-lic compound was formed above 140$0^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature due to the large amount of iron oxides within the raw fly ash.

  • Optically translucent Sialon ceramics was fabricated by hot pressed sintering method. The Sialon ceramics was laser textured and their tribological performance was observed. Starved lubrication method was applied on Sialon ceramics with different dimple spacing under a load of 10N and at room temperature. The material having high dimple spacing ($200{\mu}m$) shows low coefficient of friction. The material shows mild wear and therefore, wear rate of steel ball (meeting partner) was observed to measure wear rate. Different phases Sialon ceramics were analyzed by XRD patterns. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the Sialon ceramics were observed.

  • The solid solutions of ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$, i.e. ${\alpha}$-sialons, are represented by a general formula of $M_x(Si,Al)_{12}(O,N)_{16}$, in which metal ions (M) dissolve into interstitial sites to stabilize the structure. Processing methods for the fabrication of ${\alpha}/{\beta}$-sialon composites, ${\alpha}-sialon/{\beta}Si_3N_4$ composites, refractory or tough ${\alpha}$-sialon ceramics have been developed to tailor the mechanical properties. Translucent and photoluminescent properties have been investigated recently. A number of applications of ${\alpha}$-sialon ceramics as engineering and optical ceramics are also presented.

  • $\beta$-Sialon powder was prepared from Wando pyrophyllite by the carbothermic reduction and nitridation at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 h nitrogen atmosphere. Amorphous silica prepared from Si(OC2H5)4 was added to Wando pyrophyllite powder in order to control the final Z value. Two different methods were applied for synthesis of $\beta$-sialon powders. In Process A, the amorphous silica prepared from Si(OC2H5)4 was admixed to Wando pyrophyllite powder. Process B was started from the mixture of Wando Y2O3 was added to the synthesized $\beta$-Sialon powders as a sintering aid, and the mixed powders were hot pressed at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 120 min in nitrogen atmosphere under 30 MPa. Their mechanical properties were compared. The maximum values of M.O.R., hardness and KIC were 667 MPa, 16 GPa and 6.3 MN/m3/2, respectively, and they are the values obtained form $\beta$-Sialon ceramics prepared by process A of Z=0.5.

  • $\beta$-Sialon is synthesized by carbo-thermal reduction and nitriding (CTRN) method, using the Fly ash from power plant. $\beta$-Siaion is synthesized at $1,450^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours, and sintered at $1,550 ^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours in nitrogen atmosphere. The XRD analytical results show that the sintered $\beta$-Sialon contains $SiO_2$ and $FeSi_{x}$ of inter-metallic compound. The sintered $\beta$-Sialon is stable against the oxidation at the temperature of 1,31$0^{\circ}C$ for 20 hours. The weight of the sample increases rapidly by oxidation reaction at $1,360^{\circ}C$. The oxide scale is consisted with mullite phase when it is oxidized at the temperature of $1,360 ^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours.

  • Synthesis of $\beta$-Sialon powder was attempted with carbothermal reduction of porous glass. The porous glass was prepared by heat and hydrothermal treatments of 9.32 Li2O.46.5B2O3.37.2SiO2.6.98Al2O3 glass. Carbon pyrolyzed from propane gas was deposited on the porous glass, thereafter activated carbon was added as reducing agents. The synthesized $\beta$-Sialon powder was pressureless sintered at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 1hr in N2 atmosphere. The characterization of the $\beta$-Sialon powder was performed with XRD, BET, SEM and particle size analysis. The sinterability and mechanical properties of the sintered bodies were investigated in terms of bulk density, M.O.R., fracture toughness, morphology of microstructure and etc. The reduction effect of deposited carbon was better than that of activated carbon mechanically added. The formation of SiC was precominant over that of Si2ON2 and $\beta$-Sialon owing to low partial pressure of N2 inside the pore, wehreas on the surface of porous glass the formation of Si2ON2 and $\beta$-Sialon were predominant. Thereafter, SiC reduced unreacted glass to be $\beta$-Sialon. Single phase of $\beta$-Sialon(Z=1.92) was obtained from PGA porous glass having the largest pore radius by the simultaneous reduction and nitridation method at 145$0^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs. The bulk density, M.O.R., and KIC of the sitered body are 3.17g/cc, 434.4MPa and 4.1MPa.m1/2, respectively.

  • Silicon nitride powder synthesized from Kimcheon quartzite and commercial reagents, AlN and Y2O3 powders were used to prepare the partially and fully stabilized Y-${\alpha}$-Sialon ceramics by the pressureless sintering at 1800$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in N2 atmosphere. Good mechanical properties of the prepared Y-${\alpha}$-Sialon ceramics were found over 0.4∼0.6 of the Yttrium solubility range, X, in the equation Yx(Si12-4.5x, Al4.5x)(O1.5x, N16-1.5x). The properties of these prepared Y-${\alpha}$-Sialon ceramics were compared with those prepared in the same way from a commercial Toshiba Si3N4 powder.
