The advantage of plasma-sprayed coating is their good resistance against thermal shock due to the porous state of the coated layer with a consequently low Youngs modulus. However, the existence of many pores with a bimodal distribution and a laminar structure in the coating reduces coating strength and oxidation protection of the base metals. In order to counteract these problems, there have been many efforts to obtain dense coatings by spraying under low pressure or vacuum and by controlling particle size and morphology of the spraying materials. The aim of the present study is to survey the effects of the HIP treatment between 1100 and 130$0^{\circ}C$ on plasma-sprayed oxide coating of A1$_2$O$_3$, A1$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$on the metal substrate (type C18N10T stainless steel). These effects were characterized by phase identification, Vickers hardness measurement, and tensile test before and after HIPing. These results show that high-pressure treatment has an advantage for improving adhesive strength and Vickers hardness of plasma-sprayed coatings.

Inclusions in forged large steel ingots of plan carbon steel and tool steel are investigated using optical microscop observation and WDX analysis. The large nonmetallic inclusions which is over $30\sim300{\mu}m$ in their diameter were observed in the samples that has been no good on a nondestructive test. The most of the inclusions were consist of some kind of oxides, ${Al_2}{O_3}$, $SiO_2$, CaO, MgO in forms of particles and glassy with an iron particles. The experimental large steel ingot was cast with a pouring temperature which is about ten centigrade higher than the field standard. The inclusions were observed in the test ingot are the smaller than that was in a usual forged steel ingot and is spherical shape with a glassy agglomerated ${Al_2}{O_3}-SiO_2-CaO-MgO$ particle. The pouring temperature is affected on removing the nonmetallic inclusions during the solidification by a floating mechanism.
In this study we manufacture a Ni-Cr-B-Si +WC/12Co composite coating layer on a Cu base material using a laser cladding (LC) process, and investigate the microstructural and mechanical properties of the LC coating and Ni electroplating layers (reference material). The initial powder used for the LC coating layer is a powder feedstock with an average particle size of $125{\mu}m$. To identify the microstructural and mechanical properties, OM, SEM, XRD, room and high temperature hardness, and wear tests are implemented. Microstructural observation of the initial powder and LC coating layer confirm the layer is composed mainly of ${\gamma}-Ni$ phases and WC and $Cr_{23}C_6$ carbides. The measured hardness of the LC coating and Ni electroplating layers are 653 and 154 Hv, respectively. The hardness measurement from room up to high temperatures of $700^{\circ}C$ result in a hardness decrease as the temperature increases, but the hardness of the LC coating layer is higher for all temperature conditions. Room temperature wear results show that the wear loss of the LC coating layer is 1/12 of the wear level of the Ni electroplating layer. The measured bond strength is also greater in the LC coating than the Ni electroplating.
We developed nano-porous $TiO_2-SiO_2$ composites (commercial name : PTI, porous titania insulator) with low thermal conductivity as thermal insulating material as well as function of photocatalyst. The objectives of this paper are, firstly, to evaluate of the thermal conductivity of the PTI powder in the temperature range from -160 to $250^{\circ}C$, secondly to evaluate of thermal conductivities of insulation materials that is applied PTI powder. The structure of the PTI powder that has the pores size of 20-30 nm and the particle diameter of 2-10 nm. The PTI had a high surface area of $400m^2/g$ and a mean pore size of $45{\AA}$, which was fairly uniform. The thermal conductivity was measured by GHP(guarded hot plate) method and HFM(heat flux method). The PTI structure is a three-dimensional network nano-structures composed by a pearl-necklace that involved a precious stone in the center of the necklace. The thermal conductivities of PTI-PX powder by the GHP and HFM were 0.0366 W/m.K, 0.0314 W/m.K at $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. This is similar to values that are proportional to the square of the absolute temperature of the thermal conductivity of static air. The thermal conductivities of insulating sheets coated with PTI powder were similar results with that of the PTI powder.
W2C is synthesized through a reaction-sintering process from an ultrafine-W and WC powder mixture using spark plasma sintering (SPS). The effect of various parameters, such as W:WC molar ratio, sintering temperature, and sintering time, on the synthesis behavior of W2C is investigated through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of the microstructure, and final sintered density. Further, the etching properties of a W2C specimen are analyzed. A W2C sintered specimen with a particle size of 2.0 ㎛ and a relative density over 98% could be obtained from a W-WC powder mixture with 55 mol%, after SPS at 1700℃ for 20 min under a pressure of 50 MPa. The sample etching rate is similar to that of SiC. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, it is confirmed that fluorocarbon-based layers such as C-F and C-F2 with lower etch rates are also formed.
The preparation of nanocrystalline hematite, ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$, paricles and their surface coating with silica layers are described. The hematite particles with the size of 30~60 nm are firstly prepared by thermal decomposition of trinuclear acetate-hydroxo iron (III) nitrate complex, $[Fe_3$(OCOCH_3)_7$OH${\cdot}$2H_2O]NO_3$, at $400^{\circ}C$. Subsequently the hematite surfaces are coated with siliva layers by a controlled hydrolysis and condensation reaction of TEOS with varying the TEOS concentration and pH. Monodispersed and spherical $SiO_2-coatedFe_2O_3$ particles with the average particle diameter of ~90 nm and extremely narrow size distribution can be obtained at the pH of 11 and the TEOS concentration of 0.68M, which are found to be the optimum conditions in the present study in achieving the homogeneous deposition of silica layers on hematite surfaces. Diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectra reveal that the characteristic optical reflectance of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles is preserved almost constant even after coating the surfaces, suggesting that the $SiO_2$ layers can be regarded as protecting layers without degrading the optical properties of hematite particles.
