A Surface Modification of Hastelloy X by Sic Coating and Ion Beam Mixing for Application in Nuclear Hydrogen Production

  • The effects of ion beam mixing of a SiC film coated on super alloys (hastelloy X substrates) were studied, aiming at developing highly sustainable materials at above $900^{\circ}C$ in decomposed sulfuric acid gas (SO2/SO3/H2O) channels of a process heat exchanger. The bonding between two dissimilar materials is often problematic, particularly in coating metals with a ceramics protective layer. A strong bonding between SiC and hastelloy X was achieved by mixing the atoms at the interface by an ion-beam: The film was not peeled-off at ${\geq}900^{\circ}C$, confirming excellent adhesion, although the thermal expansion coefficient of hastelloy X is about three times higher than that of SiC. Instead, the SiC film was cracked along the grain boundary of the substrate at above $700^{\circ}C$. At ${\geq}900^{\circ}C$, the film was crystallized forming islands on the substrate so that a considerable part of the substrate surface could be exposed to the corrosive environment. To cover the exposed areas and cracks multiple coating/IBM processes have been developed. An immersion corrosion test in 80% sulfuric acid at $300^{\circ}C$ for 100 h showed that the weight retain rate was gradually increased when increasing the processing time.

세라믹 코팅이 기계 주조용 알루미늄합금(7075 T6)의 마찰ㆍ마모특성에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Influence of Ceramic Coating on Characteristics of Friction and Abrasion of Aluminum Alloy(7075 T6) Used in Mechanical Casting)

  • This study deals with the influence of ceramic coating on characteristics of friction and abrasion of aluminum allot(7075 T6) used in mechanical casting. In this research, frictional wear characteristic of ceramic coating materials such as $A1_2O_3$, $Si_3N_4$, SiC was investigated using aluminum alloy(7075 T6) and stainless 403 cast iron under room temperature and normal air pressure. The coating layer was observed using SEM. The conclusions are as follows: 1) Friction coefficients of $A1_2O_3$, SiC and $Si_3N_4$ are obtained 0.63 0.56 and 0.54 respectively. 2) Abrasion resistance of stainless 403 cast iron with $Si_3N_4$ is the best among the ceramic coating materials. 3) Abrasion mechanism of aluminum alloy(7075 T6) coaled with ceramic material and stainless 403 cast iron is caused by brittle fracture. 4) Coating the ceramic material on the aluminum alloy(7075 T6) can effectively increase the antiwear, impact properties, and corrosion resistance.

전해도금법으로 형성한 Ni-SiC 복합피막층의 특성 (Properties of Ni-SiC Composite Coating Layers Prepared by Electroplating Method)

  • Ni-SiC composite coating layers were prepared by electroplating method and their deposition rate, codeposition of SiC, morphology, surface roughness, hardness, wear and friction properties were investigated. It was found that the deposition rate and the codeposition of SiC in the composite coating layer increased with increasing concentration of SiC in the solution only at the early stage. Both of them reached certain maxima and then decreased with increasing concentration of SiC. Rough surface was obtained with increasing codeposition of SiC, which is probably due to the agglomeration of the SiC particle in the vicinity of surface. Vickers hardness increased with increasing codeposition of SiC and heat treatment at $300^{\circ}C$ in air for 1 hour. Wear volume decreased with increasing codeposition of SiC and friction coefficient increased with increasing codeposition of SiC at the early stage, and it became almost constant. Such wear and friction behaviors are desirable for the practical application.

Microwave Absorbance of Polymer Composites Containing SiC Fibers Coated with Ni-Fe Thin Films

  • Conductive and dielectric SiC are fabricated using electroless plating of Ni-Fe films on SiC chopped fibers to obtain lightweight and high-strength microwave absorbers. The electroless plating of Ni-Fe films is achieved using a two-step process of surface sensitizing and metal plating. The complex permeability and permittivity are measured for the composite specimens with the metalized SiC chopped fibers dispersed in a silicone rubber matrix. The original non-coated SiC fibers exhibit considerable dielectric losses. The complex permeability spectrum does not change significantly with the Ni-Fe coating. Moreover, dielectric constant is sensitively increased with Ni-Fe coating, owing to the increase of the space charge polarization. The improvements in absorption capability (lower reflection loss and small matching thickness) are evident with Ni-Fe coating on SiC fibers. For the composite SiC fibers coated with Ni-Fe thin films, a -35 dB reflection loss is predicted at 7.6 GHz with a matching thickness of 4 mm.

Interaction study of molten uranium with multilayer SiC/Y2O3 and Mo/Y2O3 coated graphite

  • Graphite crucibles are used for melting uranium and its alloys in VIM furnace. Various coating materials namely Al2O3, ZrO2, MgO etc. are applied on the inner surface of the crucibles using paint brush or thermal spray technique to mitigate U-C interaction. These leads to significant amount of carbon pick-up in uranium. In this study, the attempts are made to develop multilayer coatings comprising of SiC/Y2O3 and Mo/Y2O3 on graphite to study the feasibility of minimizing U-C interaction. The parameters are optimized to prepare SiC coating of about 70㎛ thickness using CVD technique on graphite coupons and subsequently Y2O3 coating of about 250㎛ thickness using plasma spray technique. Molybdenum and Y2O3 layers were deposited using plasma spray technique with 70㎛ and 250㎛ thickness, respectively. Interaction studies of the coated graphite with molten uranium at 1450℃ for 20 min revealed that Y2O3 coating with SiC interlayer provides physical barrier for uranium-graphite interaction, however, this led to the physical separation of coating layer. Y2O3 coating with Mo interlayer provided superior barrier effect showing no degradation and the coatings remained intact after interaction tests. Therefore, the Mo/Y2O3 coating was found to be a promising solution for minimizing carbon pick-up during uranium/uranium alloy melting.

졸-겔 침지법에 의한 $SiO_2.ZrO_2$계 다공질 저반사 코팅막 제조 및 특성 (Preparation and Characterization of Porous Low Reflective Coating Films for $SiO_2.ZrO_2$ System by Sol-Gel Dip-Coating Method)

  • Porous low reflective coating films of SiO2.ZrO2 system were prepared from the mixed alkoxide solutions of Zr(O-nC3H7)4 and partially prehydrolyzed TEOS by the sol-gel method using the dip-coating technique. In the case of 90SiO2.10ZrO2 porous coating films with HCl and H2O content was 0.3 mole and 4 mole, 378 m2/g of the specific surface area, 0.254 cm3/g of total pore volume, 30-50$\AA$ of average pore diameter. The transmittance of 90SiO2.10ZrO2 porous coated films was 95.38% at the wavelength of 550 nm, compared with the parent glass, the transmittance was increased with 4.38%.

다층코팅을 이용한 C/C 복합재료의 내산화성 및 내마모성 증진 (Improvement of Oxidation Resistance and Erosion Resistance Properties of the C/C Composite with the Multilayer Coating)

  • CVD-Si3N4/CVD-SiC/pack-SiC/pyro-carbon/(3-D C/C composite) multilayer coating was performed to improve the oxdiation resistance and erosion resistance properteis of the 3-D carbon/carbon composite, and the plasma test was performed to measure the oxidation resistance and erosion resistance properties. The thicknesses of each film layer were about 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for pack-SiC, 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for CVD-SiC and 40${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for CVD-Si3N4. When the multilayer coated specimen was exposed to the plasma flame with temperature of 500$0^{\circ}C$ for 20 seconds, it showed the weight loss five times less than that of the only pyro-carbon coated specimen.

폴리페닐카보실란을 이용한 SiOC가 코팅된 스테인리스스틸 제조 및 이의 내부식성 특징 (SiOC Coating on Stainless Steel Using Polyphenylcarbosilane, and Its Anti-corrosion Properties)

  • To improve the chemical stability of metal, the ceramic coatings on metallic materials have attracted interest from many researchers due to the chemical inertness of ceramic materials. To endure strong acids, SiOC coating on metal substrate was carried out by dip coating method using 20wt% polyphenylcarbosilane solution; SiC powder was added to the solution at 10wt% and 15wt% to improve the mechanical properties and to prevent cracks of the film. Thermal oxidation as a curing step was carried out at $200^{\circ}C$ for crosslinking of the polyphenylcarbosilane, and the coating samples were pyrolysized at $800^{\circ}C$ under argon to convert the polyphenylcarbosilane to SiOC film. The thicknesses of the SiOC coating films were $2.36{\mu}m$ and $3.16{\mu}m$. The quantities of each element were measured as $SiO_{1.07}C_{6.33}$ by EPMA, and it can be confirmed that the SiOC film from polyphenylcarbosilane was formed in a manner that was carbon rich. The hardness of the SiOC film was found to be 3.2Gpa through nanoindentor measurement. No defect including cracks appeared in the SiOC film. The weight loss of the SiOC coated stainless steel was within 2% after soaking in 10% HCl solution at $80^{\circ}C$ for one week. From these results, SiOC coating shows good potential for application to protect against severe chemical corrosion of stainless steel.

입자 크기 및 탄소 코팅에 따른 리튬이온배터리용 SiOx 음극활물질의 전기화학적 특성 (Electrochemical Properties of SiOx Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries According to Particle Size and Carbon Coating)

  • 본 연구에서는 리튬이온배터리용 고용량 음극활물질인 실리콘의 부피팽창을 완화하고 사이클 안정성을 향상시키기 위해 SiOx@C 복합소재를 제조하였다. Stӧber 법을 통해 입자 크기가 각각 100, 200, 500 nm인 SiO2를 합성하였고, 마그네슘 열환원을 통해 SiOx (0≤x≤2)를 제조하였다. 그 후 SiOx에 PVC를 탄화시켜 SiOx와 C의 비율에 따라 SiOx@C 음극활물질을 합성하였다. 제조된 SiOx와 SiOx@C 음극활물질의 물리적 특성은 XRD, SEM, TGA, 라만분광법, XPS, BET를 사용해 분석하였다. 그리고 사이클 테스트, 율속특성, CV, EIS 테스트를 통해 전기화학적 특성을 조사하였다. 입자 크기가 가장 작은 100 nm SiOx에 SiOx:C=70:30으로 탄소를 코팅하여 제조된 SiOx@C-7030은 100 사이클에서 1055 mAh/g의 방전용량과 81.9%의 용량을 유지하여 가장 우수한 전기화학적 특성을 보여주었다. 이는 SiOx 음극활물질 입자의 크기를 줄이고, 탄소를 코팅하여 사이클 안정성을 향상시킬 수 있다는 것을 의미한다.

환경차폐코팅용 이터븀 실리케이트의 고온 수증기부식 거동 (Corrosion Behavior of Ytterbium Silicates in Water Vapor Atmosphere at High Temperature for Environmental Barrier Coating Applications)

  • SiC/SiCf CMC is vulnerable to water vapor corrosion at a high temperature of 1500℃. So, EBC (Environmental Barrier Coating) materials are required to protect Si-based CMCs. Ytterbium silicates are reported to have coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) similar to that of the base material, such as SiC/SiCf CMC. When the EBC are materials exposed to high temperature environment, the interface between ytterbium silicates and SiC/SiCf CMC is not separated, and the coating purpose can be safely achieved. For the perspective of EBC applications, thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer with different CTE is formed by the reaction with water vapor in EBC, which leads to a decrease in life time. In this study, we prepare two types of ytterbium silicates to observe the corrosion behavior during the expose to high temperature and water vapor. In order to observe this behavior, the steam-jet furnace is prepared. In addition, phase formation of these ytterbium silicates is analyzed with microstructures by the before/after steam-jet evaluation at 1500℃ for 100 h.
