In order to investigate the effect of the second phase on Al2O3 matrix, SiC whisker was dispersed in Al2O3 matrix as a second phase over the content range of 5vol% to 20vol%. To this mixture, Y2O3 or TiO2 powder was added as a sintering additive before isostatically pressing and pressureless sintering at 1800-190$0^{\circ}C$ for 90min in N2 atmosphere. With increasing SiC whisker content, relative densities of composites were decreased and the grain growth of Al2O3 was restricted. When Y2O3 was added as a sintering aid the sintering temperature was 180$0^{\circ}C$, the maximum values of flexural strength, hardness and fracture toughness were 537MPa, 12.1GPa, 3.7MPa.m1/2, respectively. However, when the sintering temperature was elevated to 190$0^{\circ}C$, maximum values of flexural strength, hardness and fracture toughness were 453MPa, 17.5GPa, 4.9MPa.m1/2, respectively. Improved mechanical properties are assumed to be attributed to the crack deflection by the second phase SiC whisker and whisker pullout mechanism.
The effect of cold cyclic compaction on densification of SiC whisker/Al2O3 composite was investigated. Re-lative density of the compact increased as the number of cycle and the compaction pressure increased and the bias pressure decreased. The rate of loading and unloading and the frequency of cold cyclic compaction did not affect much on sliding and rearrangement of the particles. Fracture of SiC whisker was hardly ob-served during cold cyclic compaction and the direction of whisker was randomly oriented throughout the compact regardless of the direction of compaction. Thus, cold cyclic compaction may be an efficient method to densify SiC whisker/Al2O3 composite.
A twt -step carbothermal reduction scheme has been employed for the synthesis of SiC whiskers in an Ar or a H2 atmosphere via vapor-solid two-stage and vapor-liquid-solid growth mechanism respectively. It has been shown that the whisker growth proceed through the following reaction mechanism in an Ar at-mosphere : SiO2(S)+C(s)-SiO(v)+CO(v) SiO(v)3CO(v)=SiC(s)whisker+2CO2(v) 2C(s)+2CO2(v)=4CO(v) the third reaction appears to be the rate-controlling reaction since the overall reaction rates are dominated by the carbon which is participated in this reaction. The whisker growth proceeded through the following reaction mechaism in a H2 atmosphere : SiO2(s)+C(s)=SiO(v)+CO(v) 2C(s)+4H2(v)=2CH4(v) SiO(v)+2CH4(v)=SiC(s)whisker+CO(v)+4H2(v) The first reaction appears to be the rate-controlling reaction since the overall reaction rates are enhanced byincreasing the SiO vapor generation rate.
Alumina coated SiC whiskers were prepared by homogeneous precipitation of aluminum sulfate. The Si3N4 composites reinforced with coated SiC whiskers were fabricated by hot-pressing at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 2 h under an $N_{2}$ atmosphere of 0.1 MPa to examine the effects of coated whiskers on the mechanical properties of SiC whisker reinforced $Si_{3}N_{4}$ composite. By the addition of alumina coated SiC whiskers instead of as received ones, the fracture toughness of composite was about 6.7 $MPam^{1/2}$ which was slightly lower than as received SiC whisker reinforced composite. This result seems to be caused by the fact that the crack deflection and whisker pull-out were decreased. Thus, alumina coated SiC whiskers were considered to form relatively strong interface bond with $Si_{3}N_{4}$ matrix.
α/β sialon based composites containing silicon nitride whisker and silicon carbide platelet were fabricated by hot pressing. Effect of the reinforcing agents on the α to β phase transformation of the sialon as well as on the mechanical properties was investigated. Silicon nitride whisker and silicon carbide platelet promoted the phse transformation. TEM/EDS analysis revealed that the grain containing the whisker had 'core-rim' structure; core being high purity Si3N4 whisker and rim being β-sialon. Flexural strength of the composite decreased with the reinforcement addition which, on the other hand, improved fracture toughness of it. High temperature strength was measured at 1300℃ to be about 130 MPa lower than that measured at RT for the whisker reinforced composites.
In order to study on the effect of SiC whisker in flexural strength characterization of macro defect-free (MDF) cement composites, which composed of high alumina cement and polyvinyl alcohol, microstructural characterization of the composite specimens fabricated by the addition of SiC whiskers was investigated. Microproes are created around the SiC whisker, MDF cement didn't react with the SiC whisker. However, flexural strength of the composites have been improved. Fracture morphology of the composites, presents mainly intergranular type fracture passing around the unhydrated particles and siC whiskers, and partially transgranular type fracture. The main strengthening mechanisms of the MDF cement composites reinforced with SiC whiskers are characterized by crack deflection, microcracking, and bridging of cracks.
The $\alpha$ to $\beta$ phase transformation of $\alpha$-Si3N4 whisker and related microstructural changes have been investigated. When only $\alpha$-Si3N4 whisker was heat treated in the range 1650~175$0^{\circ}C$, the $\alpha$ to $\beta$ phase transformation occured. In this case, it eas suggested that the oxygen content in $\alpha$-Si3N4 whisker affected the transformation behavior. Although $\alpha$-Si3N4 whisker with Si was heat treated under the same condition, however, the variation of $\beta$- fraction had a similar tendency with heat treating time. Therfore, it was considered that the oxygen content in $\alpha$-Si3N4 whisker affected the transformation behavior dominently rather than the content of added Si. The added $\beta$ phase did not affect the transformation behaviro of $\alpha$-Si3N4 whisker.
$SiC_f$/SiC composites with whiskers and pyrolytic carbon (PyC) coated whiskers in the matrix were fabricated for enhancement of the fracture behaviors by the whisker growing assisted chemical vapor infiltration (WA-CVI) process, respectively. $SiC_f$/SiC composites were also prepared by the conventional CVI process as reference material. The mechanical properties and fracture behaviors were analyzed by comparison of the two types of composites prepared by WA-CVI and conventional CVI. The densities of $SiC_f$/SiC composites were in the range of $2.6{\sim}2.65g/cm^3$. The flexural strengths of composite with whiskers and with those coated by PyC were 650 MPa and 600 MPa, respectively. The tensile strength of composites with whiskers was ${\sim}285$ MPa.
Effects of sintering additives and sintering temperatures on the sintering behavior and mechanical properties of SiC whisker reinforced alumina composites have been investigated in this study. Dense (>95% TD) composites were obtained by using 2 wt% $Y_2O_3$ as liquid phase sintering additive. But only porous composite could be obtained when the sintering additives were MgO and $TiO_2$, which were known as the sintering additives for solid state sintering of alumina. Bending strength and fracture toughness were enhanced by reinforcement of SiC whisker. It is belived from the microstructure investigation that the enhanced by strength and toughness could be attribute to the reinforcing and grain growth inhibition effects of SiC whisker. After HIP treatment, fully dense composites were obtained and further enhanced mechanical properties achieved.
Among several fabrication processes of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites, the chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) process has attractive advantages in manufacturing complex net-or near-net-shape components at relatively low temperatures, easily controlling the microstructure of the matrix and obtaining the highest SiC purity level. However, it has disadvantages in that the ratio of residual pores in matrix is higher than other processes and processing time is relatively long. To reduce the residual porosity, the whisker-growing-assisted CVI process, which is composed of whisker growth and matrix filling steps has been developed. The whiskers grown before matrix filling may serve to divide the large natural pores between the fibers or bundles so that the matrix can be effectively filled into the finely divided pores. In this paper, the fundamentals of the CVI process for preparation of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites and some experimental results prepared by CVI and whisker-growing-assisted CVI processes are briefly introduced.
